I'm all for Varric as a romance option as long as they don't make him bisexual.

BioWare, not everyone has to swing both ways. It's silly.

And I don't see why Varric has to be a romance option *only* to dwarf Inquisitors, either. All seems vaguely heightist to me. Varric is a real man, whatever his stature. Just listen to that voice and look at that chest hair.

Isn't that a bit hypocritical? Who says that everyone swings for all races, if they're not into all genders? And anyway, it's been almost confirmed that all the LIs are going to be romancable by male and female protagonists, thankfully.

"Who says that everyone swings for all races, if they're not into all genders?"

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by that.

And I have nothing against bisexual or gay people. I just don't think it's very realistic that everyone in your party is bisexual. The vast majority of people in real life have a single preference.

It kind of dilutes their characters. It turns them into fan-service sexual fantasies instead of real people with minds of their own.

E.g. Big Qunari warrior companion: "I am straight."

Male Inquisitor: "Are you sure? Look a little closer."

Qunari: "Oh. I did not realize you were the main character of this video game. I suddenly find facial hair on a mate very attractive. Let us go to my tent." :P

I just don't flirt with them and pretend they're only straight or gay for that specific little universe, except Isabela.

That does make sense. But it's a bit hard to make-believe a character is straight when he hits on you or you get "heart" options popping up on the dialogue wheel every twenty minutes. lol

This doesn't apply to what your problem is. The only one with a established sexuality in Dragon Age 2 was Isabela. Anders talked about girls in DA:OA but never said he wasn't into men too.

Your example only works if the character has had a previously established sexuality that contradicts the currently presented one.

Sorry could have worded that a bit better, English isn't my first language. I mean, if it's unrealistic that he's into men, why isn't it unrealistic that he'd be into humans or elves after telling Hawke he isn't? I don't want him to be dwarf exclusive, but to be it's the same as being female-exclusive.
And the characters are playersexual, I think, so depending on your playthrough they could be straight/gay/bi/etc..
And I don't want to go off topic too much, but straight isn't the "default" option. None of the DA2 love interests ever states that they're straight, so why assume it? Thedas isn't the real world.

That one's easy. I just pretend Anders only goes for boys for MaleHawke or girls for FemHawke. :P

Even if a character's sexuality wasn't previously established, and he has the potential to be bisexual, it doesn't mean he *should* be. It's still unrealstic that *all* of the eligible people in your small group swing both ways.

And I think we should drop this now. It's just a difference of opinion, and, besides, BioWare seems set on doing things your way, anyway; so you have nothing to worry about.

The most important point I wanted to raise in my original post was that Varric should be an LI.

It's only unrealistic if you apply our own worlds steretypical morals to this one. It has been established more than once that sexuality is a more loose thing in Thedas than in World Earth.

@ Knight of Dane

It's not a question of morals.

Let's say, for example, that everyone in the world accepted bisexuality and homosexuality as the norm. Nobody had a problem with it.

Would then 90 percent of the world's population become bisexual? No.

So it's a question of genetics. What you're saying is that, in Thedas, people are genetically different and that a huge percentage of them are attracted to both sexes.

Not saying this isn't true; just clarifying the issue.

@ Everybody. lol

I support Varric as an LI.

And I'll change my previous opinion, since it caused quite a bit of contention, and some fair points have been raised:

I'd want Varric to be straight in my playthrough, because to my mind he is. Therefore I don't want him to flirt with my male Inquisitor. Understood, BioWare? They're bros, nothing more.

If other male Inquisitors want to romance him, let them be the ones to proposition him, and let that lead to the gay dialogue options.

I can't find a source right now, but I think DG has said that that's exactly what they're going to do. So, for either gender, you'll be the one to start the romance, nobody's going to flirt with you first and after you've hit the heart button or whatever, they respond. (Idk I think it was at a romance pannel at some convention??)

@Secretlyapotato (cool name, btw).

Same here. Varric is as straight as they come in my DA universe.

@ Nyneve

That's excellent news. That way I can at least pretend that not everyone in my party is bisexual.

why not - i explain it this way:

the PC-Character is a unique character, someone that just gets past such "trivial" things as sexual preference (hell, i would say i am straight, but even i can admit that some men are rather sexy (not the people you meet on the street though, but powerfull people at the top of the pyramid that is humanity with wealth and influence) - and i don't necessarily mean their looks, as i prefer females in that department)...

hell, some people find power very attractive (i certainly do, same for wealth and i am not ashamed to admit that!) and don't much care about gender, just about the wealth/power etc.

so, yeah it is IMHO not that unrealistic (even more: as stated by some others already: Thedas is not the real-world :)

greetings LAX

Hello Friends!!!!

Ok so I've been horribly wrong!!!! Often times, I'm sure I've been caught saying that "all LI's will be player sexual" BUT I was wrong! Here is a quote from Mr. Gaider himself about 11months ago.

"Once again-- the romances are *not* "all bisexual". While some people don't like subjective sexuality, being aware of the fact some of your love interests could romance someone of the same gender in another game takes a back seat to fairness and fun gameplay. As I said before, if we have a sufficient number of romances, a spread of set sexualities would actually be my preference... but that's not always going to be the case, as the game's focus is not on romance content even if threads on the BSN often seem to be."

If we see a Varric romance, which I hope.... I don't want him with a human after he confirms that he isn't into humans.

If it were to happen I like the above suggestion HOWEVER...

I think Varric is too good for us, we don't deserve him.

Please refresh my memory since I can't for the life of me remember hearing about this, when and where does Varric state that he's only into dwarves? I'm on my third.. fourthish? playthrough of DA2 and I have yet to hear it. What am I missing?

I think they're reffering to this
But we can't be sure that he wasn't kidding or something. I read somewhere that Varrick was orginally be a LI in DA2. I'll be happy even if he will be only for dwarves.

Well that and he talks about wanting some cute dwarven girls up in the Hanged Man.

It's possible he's lying and he just doesn't like HAWKE though. I know, it seems impossible. EVERYONE in DA2 wanted Hawke :P

Please don't make him gay. Just have him fancy the player character if the player rolled a female dwarf.
