the storyline in 3 was very very bad compared to 1 and 2 as the story for some reason went right off the block of what had gone before. They introduced the kid which is still hated by most people and it didnt even offer an ending to the trilogy.
Instead it just loaded up arguments that still rage through to today, it split the playerbase in a terrible way because instead of theory crafting of what could come next and how the universe could step forward and how the crew and shep went on into the universe we ended up with the feeling that nothing happens at all after the endpoint of ME3.
And thats quite sad, what was once a beutiful and enhanced universe turned into the kid huh. And since me3 alot of lifelong bioware fans turned there back on mass effect, the bsn turned into a you vs me arena, and if they had gone along the original lines of the trilogy instead of trying to rewrite the trilogy from 3 mostly ignoring 1 and 2 this game and this forums would have been a much greater, friendly place who were really expanding on what me4 could be not what me3 should have been.

Me1 wins the story award, me2 wins in characters and interaction with them.
I still think that all the games are good and I recommend them whereever I can, but they're not perfect.
Ie. the main story went downhill in 2 and 3. me1 went overboard with selection of gear and stuff, which they turned down waaay too much in 2 but allmost returned to enough in me3. Me2 gave us loaaads of character interactions with a wiiide range of diverse characters (I find my liking of the characters to be one of the main reasons why the game is so engaging). There me2 was a definate improvement on me1 and me3 fell under the bar (it didnt need as many squadmates as me2, but to me it felt as too few).
Well it's just my oppinion anyway.
PS: Don't mention the wa... uhm ending.

Edit. It is smilar to how a game mechanic can be a lot of fun but have the wrong feel for a campaign setting. Magic is a great example. A mana pool, spell slots, skill check, and supernatural contract are just a few game mechanics for magic and can drasticly change the feel of a game.

While the gameplay is less clunky and more polished in ME3, it was far easier to beat then ME2 insanity as an adept except for moments like the 3x Geth primes on Rannoch and i actually prefered the slightly more slow paced gameplay it had. I guess the direction the Adept took from ME2 to ME3 have something to do with it as well.

ME1 was clunky and had a terrible inventory system.
ME2 was slow, the enemies were boring to fight (mercenaries at least 80% of the game), and little to no weapon variety/customization
ME2 had good gameplay, but the enemies and gunplay dont feel anywhere near as solid as they do in ME3

ME2 by far. Dialogue options are also gameplay and 2 had a great mix of that and combat. ME1 is also very nice to go back to if you have the patience for its gameplay style.garrus and ashley squad wrote...

ME1 had great planetary exploration, even though I prefer the Hammerhead.

The only big negative point I have is that the whole system of weapons, skills and tactical commands felt more tacked on and annoying than actually useful. Whatever weapon I chose, whoever I took with me and whatever I skilled them, I made it through without much difficulties on normal as well as on insanity. Of course that only applies to the singleplayer. Multiplayer is properly challenging.
Though the rest of the gameplay, aka dialogue, sidequesting and free-roaming also pull it down a lot. The dialogues were nicely acted out, but sometimes just plain stupid and awkward, really streamlined and I didn't really feel like I controlled Shepard as much. ME2 conversations were better. Then that endless jogging through the Citadel because all the important things had to be scattered around hundreds of meters away from each other. This was often the phase where I turned off the game because I got tired. Last but not least the whole system of sidequests where I was doing nothing but following that marker into another menu to click on some planet. That's as much fun as searching for files on my computer.
Sadly, the second paragraph took pretty much half of the gameplay time, so I guess I have to say that ME2 had the most enjoyable gameplay overall.

I always had options available to me and I never felt like I was stuck behind chest high walls.
Grenades were better too, they actually went where you wanted them to, could be detonated at any time and could be outfitted with a variety of effects.
Conversations would be a tie between ME1 and ME3. First thing I do in Mass Effect 1 is put points into Charm and Intimidate. I really like the interrupt system but didn't like the removal of the middle dialogue option in ME3.
Don't like the conversation system in ME2 because I felt tied to one path, whereas in ME1 and ME3 you could easily play a mixed character and still have the paragon and renegade dialogue options.

Throw in the fact that that they interacted with each OTHER though? Character interaction is easily a stronger point in Me3's favour.

I'm still pissed off I never got to rescue to Elcor from their homeworld. I just shot a probe at them. Just -how- did they evacuate the city with the aid of a goddamn probe?
