"Oh no, not another one!" Don't worry, I've put thought into this one.
The theory on all dwarves who return to the stone's souls being apart of the lyrium. My theory is that red lyrium only causes a more severe version of blue lyrium's side effects (save for the absorbing someone who over uses it), and that the madness caused by the idol is specific to the idol itself. If red lyrium isn't new and existed before humans; than considdering the dwarves ruled the underground world of Thedas, they probably were not only aware of it, but of it's side effects. And yet there the idol sat, in the shape of a small dwarf. I think that the souls of all who used the idol go in it, and that they are the corruption/madness that the idol caused. Think of the type of dwarf that would use red lyrium, despite being aware of the side effects: mad, power hunger, maybe controlling and spiteful, maybe even hateful/resentful of the abilities the elves above commanded. I believe it is the souls of these long gone dwarves whom willingly used the red lyrium's power that corrupted Meredith's mind.
