Hello,
I have attempted to install from both my cd, and from the the digital download, and I'm receiving the same error (Installation failed: data error).
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Did you retry?
I got that error the first time I tried to install.
Then I just tried again right away and it worked perfectly.
Good luck!

Try cleanning the disc or also try a differnet DVD drive. Somtimes some dvd drives will have problems. My dad had a issue liek that once where one dvd drive wouldn't install it and my old one did.

I have the same problem with the digital download. (IT IS NOT A DISK DRIVE PROBLEM). This appears to be a fairly big issue. I have a case in with EA and they are working on it with my diagnostic files. It's baffling the guys at EA support because they can install the digital download files fine on their machines. Anyway, I've seen variations of the same issue posted on forum everywhere.
I'll post here if EA actually sends me a fix to the problem. At this point though, they think it's folks machines and not a problem with the files themselves.

So basicly we can't do anything except wait for EA's response? I can't beleive there hasent even been any official "notice" about this bug. You'd think theyd atleast tell us they're aware of it.
There goes 80 bucks in the trash because for some reason this is the only game my PC can't install.

I had the same problem, and just reinstalled right away again. Worked fine, and I was able to play for a couple good hours no problem. Then the girl friend came home, hmm wonder if there is a tech support line for nagging girlfriends.

Prexxus, I had the same error and I noticed the problem was a corrupted file on one of the installation rar files. I managed to find a workaround deleting the corrupted file inside the rar and replacing it adding another file with the same name inside... Now my only problem is that my game doesn't have a sound file that I don't know where can I find, but anyway... at least the installation worked and I'm playing the game.
PS: Btw... If someone could provide me a copy of that file that was corrupted that one would make my day

I've retried a number of times - from the disk, from the digital download and installing from hard drive, all three gave me the same Data Error. Strange and frustrating. I'm hoping EA help can figure out a solution.
If anyone else can figure it out, please post. Thanks!

Heh... same happened to me, thanks to the Maker I managed to get the missing file from a friend. How can be that a file that decompress fine on one computer doesn't on another? I've checked other forums and there's a lot of people having the same issue... how weird

So if I unrar them on my girlfriends pc.... and transfer them to mine... then maybe I can instal it!

When I used mozilla to download the game and winrar to unzip it (d2d says you can use mozilla in the fine print, but you cannot) I got the corrupt error as well. When I downloaded and used the "comrade" dl system from gamespy that the digital download provider suggested, it installed and unpacked without a hitch. This is the first time I have had that issue from d2d, and they are definitely incorrect in their download notes about what works and what doesn't.
Before you go and re-download anything, try using a different unzip utility on the zip-file, it may be that your girlfriends unzip utility is working and yours is not. That's the easiest fix I could recommend, otherwise re-download and unpack using the utilities that your digital content provider prefers.

I have the same problem with the Digital Delux Edition.
Here's what I did to identify exactly where my problem is: 1) Notice on which archive my installer aborted, in my case, it was a 1.23 GB archive called "env.rar". 2) Browsed to that archive, and did test it in WinRAR to identify what's going wrong there.
What I came up with is that only 1 little file was having a CRC mismatch. The exact file is:
"env.rar\\packages\\core\\env\\orz200d\\orz200d_5_5_0.gpu.rim", Size:4,220,312, Packed:650,899, CRC: 175D5F38.
Fixing my issue is just a matter of obtaining the correct file (from someone really nice and helpful), replacing the one already in the archive, and then restarting installation.
So, could someone send me his valid "orz200d_5_5_0.gpu.rim" please so that I could resolve my problem? I have already posted my issue here and submited a support ticket as well: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/89384

Even so, you can still notice on which archive the installer is aborting, and doing the archive test to know exactly which file is giving you a CRC mismatch.
That way, my guess is that you can copy paste your installation files to hard disk, rebuild your archive by replacing the corrupt file in question, and do the installation from there. Of course, I'm not sure of the authentication method the disk version of the game, but it's worth a try.

Mine's a corrupt file and the archive ends unexpectedly immediately afterwards. In my case it's the campaign vo_english archive and the corrupt file is epi_shale.fsb followed by a whole lot of nothing cause the archive ends.

There really needs to be a fix for this soon, same thing here been trying since yesterday morning everything everyone has posted and every thing i can think of and still nothing. They need to put up the full 15 gig version for download, these random data errors at different points every time on Windows exp are really pushing me towards returning it and giving up after a day and a half of trying.

It's interesting and suspect that folks are having issues with different files. At first, I was having a problem with a specific file in the "campaign_movies03.rar". After redownloading and doing some other things like disabling virus and firewall, my error occurs much earlier in the "core.rar" section.
Honestly, I'm not sure that there is a simple solution to this thing as far as unzipping certain rars and replacing files. Some of yall are very good with this sort of thing, but I'd preferring a clean install. Although ultimately this is still a EA/Bioware issue, I'm starting to wonder if it's actually an issue with the PCs themselves - something unique but consistent across our machines that encounter this problem. Maybe it's Winrar, but really you shouldn't even need the progam on your machine (the installer should take care of it).
I'm not great at this stuff, but my thinking is that we should think about what could conflict with the install or maybe even the download process as opposed to issues with the files themselves.

I tried checking with both winrar and winzip but I get the same problem both ways... corrupt file, archive ends unexpectedly is how both read it. I don't get why we're all having corrupt files occur either and yeah a clean installer would be nice but at this point I'll take whatever help I can get with loads of gratitude and heartfelt thanks cause I really want to play the game, that's why I preordered it.
Prexxus how did you go transferring the file from your girlfriend's pc. And if that failed what file do you need? If its not my corrupt file and you have somewhere I can upload it I'd happily do so for you.

I've been fighting with this problem all afternoon, sometimes it fails at the beginning of install, sometimes past the halfway point. I have the DVD CE, Vista 64-bit, 6 GB RAM, GTX 280, oodles of HD room...it should run dammit.
My default install folder was \\program files(x86)\\, which DAO was not happy with, it gave me the message "The current permissions are insufficient to write to the selected folder". I have never seen this message before in my life, and it seemed happy with \\program files\\, so what's going on? Also, it sometimes gives me the options for installing shortcuts during the install, sometimes not. There's no rhyme or reason for the data error.
I've tried almost everything others have suggested here, and turned off the User Account Control, as that was something that worked for Mass Effect's sometimes buggy install. I am becoming extremely annoyed. <_<
I hope BioWare (or anybody!) comes up with something very soon.
