I've finally got it to install...I noticed it was a different file every time that was causing the problem,

I reckon its a bug with the installer myself

anyway I gave it one last try for tonight, without doing anything different, and this time it worked

good luck to everyone else who's struggling

I solved it for my PC, One of my memory stick (1GB DDR2) was broke, after I replaced it the game installed without any problem, very weird.

RAM issues could definitely be a potential fault behind this problem - again, one more example of just how freaking frustrating this can be. Especially as its now been over a month without any direct support from the EA helpdesk, just me and various other people (who have been absolutely excellent by the way) posting their attempts and solutions as they find them.

Kamoba - as I understand it from another forum, you're exchanging the DVD. That's definitely worked for some people, so fingers crossed it'll work for you too!

If the same problem occurs and, try using 7zip to extract the campaign_vo_english.rar (don't use Winrar, as it refuses to extract archives it believes its corrupt - 7zip has no such qualms, and if the error isn't significant it's unlikely to break the game).

If that doesn't work, or you've already tried it and know it doesn't work, let me know. Although it'll be a mild pain to transfer a >1gb file, I'm pretty sure something could be worked out.

The guy who was helping me on the other forums has sent me the precise file which we bealeive to be the problem, if it does not work then I have one more idea....

EA "allow" you to set up the game onto anouther computer, via their downloader, if i cannot get this final attempt to work, then i'll simply try the EADM version.

As for the game exchange, I did try.... but the store was sold out! lol.

Wozearly, thank you for all the help and support you have given myself, and many others it is highly appreciated and I thank you.

If I can get the game working, then i'll consider it a christmas present from yourself, and Hugo (The other person helping me)

Dave.

If its a precise file in the archive, that gives you the opportunity to delete that file in the .rar and retry the installation, then put your new copy in with where the other bits of that extracted .rar go in the installation directory - although you should have been able to do that already by deleting the file and installing (you wouldn't have been able to replace it after deleting, but you should have got the game running all the same).

If it doesn't work, just outline for me briefly exactly what you can and can't do with that .rar file after copying it to your hard drive. Can it be opened at all? Can individual files be extracted? Which ones do 7zip / Winrar object to, etc.

Basically, the more its possible to recover from that file, the easier it is to isolate and deal with the problem. It'll hopefully avoid the need to transfer a 1gb file, if it comes to that.

magnamagna, generally you don't need to know a lot about computers to get round this problem. However, we can't tell you 100% how to fix it as the way to fix it varies for different people.

I'd recommend you go to page 8 of this thread and try my list of 3 fairly straightforward fixes listed there. All the fixes identified since then require a bit more effort and/or computer familiarity. Good news is that generally the simple fixes work for most people.

Let me know if you're still struggling after that, or if anything suggested doesn't make sense.

belcher - that sounds like a completely different issue, which I don't think is specifically related to DA:O at all. Might be worth googling "xml configuration corrupt" and look for general fixes to the issue. ;)

I have found a workaround, provided you can install the game on another computer:

backup the installmainfest_en.ini file,

edit the installmanifest_en.ini, and delete everything but the first following lines, and replace NomberofFiles=14 by NumberOfFiles=0:

[Response]
NumberOfFiles=0
NumberOfInis=0
AdditionalFileSize=500000
Build=9343
SKU=WWRetail

launch the installer.

It will skip the unpacking phase, and just copy some exe and update registry entries

The next step is copying everything from the original folder to the new game location, WITHOUT replacing any file (select skip all when prompted about replacing existing file with the same name, but merge all when prompted about merging folders with the same name).

The shortcut might not be there, but you can launch the game from the exe (DALauncher.exe, or DAorigins.exe)

If you don't have another PC, you can unpack the files manually to your DA folder with the 7Z archiver program afterwards. You can then retry unpacking the corrupted files, sometimes it works(it seems to be semi random).

I'd just like to throw a thank you out for this particular fix as it worked out perfectly for myself (two computers, installed fine on my girlfriend's but mine was the one with problems extracting some core.rar).  I'd also just like to add that if you launch the \\bin_ship\\DAorginsconfig.exe after doing these steps there is a 'repair' section which will create any launch icons etc for you as well.

Okay so I had the problem where my installation would just cancel itself right off the bat, and I wouldn't let me install, so I did the extracting files thing with winrar and now I can run the game. However when I start the game and get to the start menu, I can move my mouse around but if I try clicking on anything it won't start. So basically I can get to the start menu but then I am stuck and can't do anything else.

magna - important point here. If you downloaded the game, then you already have everything on your hard drive (ie, the easy way). If you have a CD or DVD of the game, then you need to copy everything on it to somewhere on your hard drive (C:\\) first. That allows you to edit the files and do the manual workarounds, which you can't do direct from the CD. ;)

I'd prefer not to talk people through 'live' if I can, as I don't want to start promising that to everyone. I'll only do that if you're absolutely stuck after trying all the solutions we know of that are possible for you to try (some require two computers, etc.)

Sabuiy - not come across that problem before. When you say it cancelled itself straight away, was there any error message? The more info you can give, the more we can help.

I was in your boat briefly myself when I was first looking for solutions. Unfortunately, you need to get the installer to run rather than just manually extract everything and run the game, as otherwise it doesn't actually install correctly and, as you found, you can't then do anything at the menu.

This is why its critical to find out what's griefing the installer and then work out a way to get round it. ;)

I had this issue with the EADM downloaded version on Windows XP. Even if you're not running XP, I would try this as it completely solved the problem:

Has EA or Bioware said anything about this yet? Like when an official fix will arrive?

This whole thing has been a nightmare. I got this game for christmas and have spent the last five days trying to install the game. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and my computer is well above the recommended specs. I've tried nearly every fix I've came across. The closest I've came to playing the game is when I manually extracted all the files myself. This allowed me to play the game, however the screen was black with nothing showing but the dialogue, and maybe a floating head or two. Every other method, including downloading the game, and copying the files to my hard drive turn up the data error. It's usually random when the installer decides to crash, sometimes it will make it right to the end while other times it will crash near the start.

These are the affected files:

packages/core/data/anims.erf

packages/core/data/gui.erf

packages/core/data/textures.erf

packages/core/env/den510d/den510d_2_10_0.gpu.rim

packages/core/high/texturepack.erf

If I'm lucky, the installer will make it past some of those files, but it's never gone past the texturepack.erf.

This whole thing has driven me mad. If anyone has maybe got some other less known fixes, I'd love to hear them.

I've been having the same problem as belcher24717. when I insert the CD and error message instantly pops up saying "the internal settings are corrupt". By selecting the start up option from inside the CD I can get around this message and the game allows me to enter the registration code, however as soon as the game begins to install an error message pops up saying the XML file is corrupt. I don’t believe it’s a problem with the CD as I have exchanged it for a new one and get the same problem. I also installed the game on another computer and tried to run it through the network but the error message still persists and will not allow me to play. Any suggestions?

I spent nearly 20 hours fighting the data error, and I've got it working! Much thanks to the people in this forum that I've been lurking. You guys are awesome. Here's what I did.

Game: DVD

OS: Windows 7 Professional x64

You need: WinRAR, 7zip

I ran the installer and it died every time in the same RAR file (in my case, campaign_vo_english).

1. Open the offending file in 7zip.

2. Extract the files to some folder (in my case, F:\\Dragon Age Disc\\Frankenstein Files\\). I couldn't do them all at once, but I was able to extract every file by doing chunks of them at a time. Go figure.

3. Once all the files are out, browse to your folder. "modules" should be visible. Right-click it. In the context menu, my WinRAR allowed me to Add to Archive... Name it whatever the original RAR was named.

4. Copy the DVD, MINUS THE BROKEN RAR, to your HDD.

5. Move the new RAR you made into the copy of the disc, so that it's in the same place in the file structure that it is on the DVD.

6. Run Setup from your HDD.

7. Wait while it does its thing.

8. Play.

Feel free to message me if I've been unclear. I hope that solves a problem for you guys that nearly drove me insane! Thanks especially to Wozearly for inspiring this idea.

"Pro" and "Service Pack 3" are two different things, I'll save the detailed explanation and say that Service Pack 3 is simply an update for Windows XP, regardless if you have Pro or Home edition.

I know several people running the game with SP2 only, but it may still help to update (if your computer already isn't.)

Visit either of these two URLs:
http://view.atdmt.co...p3fromwinupdate
http://update.microsoft.com

The first should do most of the updating work for you, or you can use the second and you'll be able update anything else on your system at the same time that needs it.

I wanted to try the solutions on page 8 (the one with copying all the files off the disk)- but I can't even get the disk to copy onto my PC- it gives the message that the files are not on the disk- though I find them when I explore the disk. Any reason why this should be happenig?

The system is running Vista SP2, 3GB Ram- 900GB free space on the hard disk

I have the same issue I bought my copy from the EA store, also a general query if you have an EA game on disc can you register it and download it digitally?? I have a copy of Mass Effect and although it's registered (I think as I have got Bring down the sky) I see no option to redownload??

Also where are the downloaded files located from the EADM?

Responding in reverse order...

Yackob - my understanding is that you can download from the EADM if you have a CD copy of the game, but not if you purchased the game as a direct download from another online store. Its worth a try - people have had less issues with the EADM version (as a general rule).

Marc - no logical reason, no. Try opening the DVD and copying files across one at a time (yes, I know, its a pain) and as you find ones that won't copy easily, open them and extract the contents to the hard drive somewhere with 7zip, then recreate the .rar file afterwards from the extracted files and put it with the others. If it still refuses, you may want to see if you can get the DVD exchanged (or try downloading via the EADM) - DAO seems highly sensitive to scratches.

Lascivar - thanks. :)

Steve - a good workaround if there's a file that's refusing to be copied from the DVD. Glad you finally got it working. ;)

Spig - I've no idea what causes the XML errors. If more people get them, I'll look into it, but I don't think its the same issue as the data installation error and because I can't recreate the problem, I have no clue how to fix it.

SSJ - We're still waiting on a 100% official fix (not sure if the one Mvaris' linked counts, as I don't know if it works for everyone) but EA/Bioware are aware of the problem. If you want to continue the manual approach, then basically, you need to get it to install correctly first before manual extracts will work correctly. What you could try is making a copy of everything on your hard drive, then deleting all the offending files you listed and keep running the copy of the installer until it eventually completes - it doesn't know what files should be in each .rar and never checks, so it can be fooled. You could even delete all the files from all the .rars (but leave the .rars intact and empty). Then, once you have a completed install, manually extract the files you deleted from the original source to the game directory.

Mvaris - that's a fix I've never heard of before, and the first official response to the issue I've ever seen. Definitely worth other people trying if other fixes haven't worked...I also like EA's subtle acknowledgement of the manual workarounds we've created. ;)

Magna - the copies shouldn't delete themselves after being put on your hard drive. That's really, really strange - I've no idea what would cause that. Even if it happens, it doesn't matter. You can still make a copy and go through the commonly offending files and do the 3b) fix on page 8 without trying to install from the copy directory first. Each time the install fails on a new file and the whole thing vanishes, start again and delete that one too. Eventually it'll work, then you just need to manually extract all of the files that you had to delete from their original source to the game directory.

If you'd said that about any other game, I'd raise an eyebrow and say "How strange..."

As this is DAO, and this error is particularly obtuse with multiple different solutions possible, I'll instead say "Congratulations".

Enjoy the game. ;)
