I have found a workaround, provided you can install the game on another computer:

backup the installmainfest_en.ini file,

edit the installmanifest_en.ini, and delete everything but the first following lines, and replace NomberofFiles=14 by NumberOfFiles=0:

[Response]
NumberOfFiles=0
NumberOfInis=0
AdditionalFileSize=500000
Build=9343
SKU=WWRetail

launch the installer.

It will skip the unpacking phase, and just copy some exe and update registry entries

The next step is copying everything from the original folder to the new game location, WITHOUT replacing any file (select skip all when prompted about replacing existing file with the same name, but merge all when prompted about merging folders with the same name).

The shortcut might not be there, but you can launch the game from the exe (DALauncher.exe, or DAorigins.exe)

If you don't have another PC, you can unpack the files manually to your DA folder with the 7Z archiver program afterwards. You can then retry unpacking the corrupted files, sometimes it works(it seems to be semi random).

I'd just like to throw a thank you out for this particular fix as it worked out perfectly for myself (two computers, installed fine on my girlfriend's but mine was the one with problems extracting some core.rar).  I'd also just like to add that if you launch the \\\\bin_ship\\\\DAorginsconfig.exe after doing these steps there is a 'repair' section which will create any launch icons etc for you as well.

Thanks dude, this worked out fine for me. I had the same problem as some other people, Data Error failed at different files all the time and I could install + run it on 2 other computers, but not mine..

Did EA even comment on this bug yet?

Seems to me it might be something with our Hard disks or RAM?

Anyhow, now I can enjoy this great game! Only took me 10 hours + a format...

EA haven't openly commented as such, and I've not yet had any feedback from people trying EA's semi-official workaround for the problem, which bears little resemblance to any of the manual workarounds posted here (which definitely do work for the majority of people).

Hard drive issues, RAM, driver conflicts, DVD drives not liking the DVD, DVD damage, download corruption, the EA installer, errors generated by copy protection and just plain bloody mindedness on behalf of the game have all been suggested as possible causes.

I'd personally be surprised if it was actually a single cause behind this. The error manifests itself in different ways, and different people find different manual fixes work for them. It could well be that in this thread we're compiling fixes for several different, but related, errors.

This may also explain why such a widespread error hasn't been fixed in any of the patches. I imagine some poor sod at Bioware has torn most of his hair out over this. ;)

I've been trying to install this game (DVD version) for about ten hours now, and am about to go crazy.

When I try to autorun the DVD, nothing happens for awhile, then I get some XML errors. When I run the startup directly from the DVD, I get prompted to agree to the EULA, enter the game key, and it starts extracting files. It always fails somewhere while extracting core.rar, but at different percentages each time. packages\\\\core\\\\data\\\\anims.enf seems to be a frequent file to fail on, but perhaps that is because it is especially large.

I have tried updating the InstallShield kernel, and renaming InstallShield to InstannShieldOld. I can't copy the files from the DVD to my harddrive; I keep getting errors such as "Cannot read from the source file or disk," at files beginning with "campaign_vo_english," "core," "english," and including some others if I choose "skip." Eventually it seems to stop copying files entirely, and the progress bar sits motionless.

I tried eclarkdog's fix from here: http://social.biowar...x/87490/3#93003 , aside from the last step of actually downloading a copy of the game. I haven't yet tried downloading a copy of the game, because if I spend 15 hours on the download and then have it fail again my brain may explode.

My DVD appears absolutely clean and scratch-free, and although I haven't disassembled my drive the tray appears clean.

I've installed other games recently without problem. I suppose I'll start the download and see if I can install from that, but if there is a quicker solution I'd be EXTREMELY grateful.

Raphite, I had the same trouble copying files to the HDD. The solution was to open the archive in question with 7zip, extract the files to my HDD, and remake the RAR file. I suspect my DVD drive was to blame for this, since the longer it worked, the less likely it was to... work.

Now, I am missing a few audio files related to Morrigan, as I discovered in the Wilds today, but that's my only complaint with my fix so far.

I started a EADM download and still have about 70-80% left to go (will be finished tomorrow morning sometime), but am considering pausing it to try your fix, SteveHouse. When you extract and remake the files with 7zip, are those (problematic) files just skipped when copying the DVD to the harddrive? I tried skipping every problem file while doing the copy earlier in hopes that I could obtain them elsewhere, but eventually the progress bar just stopped and didn't budge for a good 30 minutes, at which point I cancelled.

I'm also interested in Homerinvest's solution of putting the DVD in a laptop, sharing it, and installing it on my desktop from the laptop's drive across a network. The only problem is my wireless network is currently a Verizon MiFi 3G converter, and my laptop is a MacBook running OSX, and I'm not sure if either would be a problem.

EDIT: Download completed this morning. The extraction process is still failing, but it's doing better than it was doing from the DVD. Sometimes it fails as early as around 20% while extracting core.rar, but sometimes it gets much further. Once, it got to 100.0% before failing! UGH.

EDIT2: It now seems to always extract core.rar to 98-100% before failing. I tried making a copy of core.rar in another folder, deleting core.rar from the data folder, and trying the install again, but it almost immediately stops and asks me to insert a disk ("Please insert the next disk (Disk 1)"). Really have no idea what to try now.

EDIT3: Trying to extract and remake the core.rar file with 7zip. While extracting, I got diagnostic messages that "CRC failed in 'packages\\\\\\\\core\\\\\\\\data\\\\\\\\modelhierarchies.erf'. File is broken." and "Data error in 'packages\\\\\\\\core\\\\\\\\data\\\\\\\\textures.erf'. File is broken". Pressing on with the plan, nevertheless.

EDIT4: Umm, 7zip doesn't let you make .rar files? Options seems to be .7s, .tar. and .zip.

EDIT5: Okay, extracted core.rar with 7zip, got the diagnostic messages described in EDIT3, repackaged the files as a .rar with WinRAR, and reinserted the newly recreated core.rar into the data folder. Now when I try to install, it always fails at 25.5% of extracting core.rar, somewhere in the anims.erf file.

Since I can't seem to get it to install without the core.rar file in place, I guess now I'll find some software to test my RAM for errors, since I can't think of anything else to do.

EDIT: I downloaded something called "Windiag" to test my RAM, and it did detect a "hardware error" in the memory, but didn't give me any more specific information. I opened up the case, cleaned out some dust, and removed and reinserted all four of my 1gig RAM sticks. Afterwards, my downloaded copy of Dragon Age still failed the install at 98-99% of extracting core.rar. When I replaced core.rar with my own extracted-and-repackaged copy of core.rar, the installation again failed at ~25.5%, like before.
I decided to try installing from the DVD again, and now it won't even start, immediately getting stuck trying to copy a file from D:\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\data to nsxC64C.tmp, and giving me a message that "Setup is missing critical files in order to run. Please check to make sure that you are running Setup from the original package." That's nice.

Since I apparently have a RAM problem of some type, I'll try to figure out how to discover which stick is the problem. I suppose I could just remove them one at a time, and try installing with 3 gigs instead of my normal 4.

EDIT2: Unless someone posts something else promising here, I'm conceding defeat after 20+ hours of effort over my last two days of vacation, not counting the 15 hours  overnight spent downloading a copy. Hopefully EA  will be able to fix this thing on their end; in the meantime, no Dragon Age for me.

Apparently I have a RAM error of some type, but after removing the four RAM sticks one at a time and attempting an install each time, nothing changed. I don't know how else to narrow down the problem; which apparently hasn't been a problem for any other game or program that I run.

The maddening thing is that in the course of trying to solve this I fixed other issues that would have also prevented the install, in addition to my still-currently-unknown problem or problems. Some mysterious problem (perhaps with my DVD drive? perhaps with the files on the disk?) seems to keep the game from installing correctly from the DVD, since it installs much further from my downloaded copy. My downloaded copy wouldn't even commence correctly until I applied eclarkdog's fix from here, http://social.biowar...87490/3#93003.

I simply don't have it in me to open a ticket with EA and deal with someone telling me to check my DVD for scratches and make sure my monitor is turned on.

Hopefully my experience will help in the development of a solution to this problem, and I'd be extremely grateful if someone recommends an avenue that I haven't tried (in particular, I was frustrated by not being able to install without core.rar included in hopes of extracting it manually afterwards ... I may be doing something simple incorrectly here). So, best of luck to everyone still working on this problem, and hopefully I'll be able to play Dragon Age someday.

EDIT3: Couldn't resist and tinkered some more. I used WinRAR to test every .rar archive in the download, and found multiple corrupt files. I deleted these individually, hoping to replace them manually after a successful install. When I tried to install, core.rar was completely extracted for the first time ever and it began extracting env.rar, and I began to rejoice. Unfortunately, it failed while working on env.rar. I ran another test on env.rar, found more corrupt files. Deleted these, tried again, another fail. Tested again, found a dozen more more additional corrupt files. "Screw deleting all those," I thought, and just tried a few more install attempts. Sometimes it failed while extracting core.rar, sometimes it made it partway through env.rar before failing. Now I am really defeated.

I also could not finish the installation from the DVD, but when I copied the contents of DVD into a folder in my hard drive, I could install the game from hard drive with no problem.

Raphite - haven't had time to read your entire posts yet, but I spotted one thing you're doing wrong. If you want to delete core.rar whilst keeping a copy for manual replacing afterwards, you'll need to create a new core.rar file that's empty, or you'll get the 'insert disk' error.

The installer knows what .rar files should be there, but doesn't check their contents, so an empty .rar called core.rar should do it.

Edit: I've now read your back catalogue of posts, and I really do sympathise with the struggles you've had installing the game. In my opinion, you did all the right things, you just didn't quite go far enough.

I'd be inclined to suggest using the above approach on all of the problem .rars listed and manually installing their entire contents afterwards - for clarity, and to avoid you going insane, I'll outline the whole process below. ;)

1) Ideally from the downloaded version (its slightly more involved to do that from the DVD if files won't copy properly off it), make a complete copy of the entire contents of the game install files so that you have two versions on your HDD.

2) Go into the data directory on the original game install files and delete all of the contents of each of the offending .rars (core, env, textures and campaign_vo_english as a minimum, plus any others that have griefed you at any point in the last 20 hours), or delete these .rar files and create new empty ones of the same name in their place. Same difference.

3) Run the installer from the original directory, so that the core part of the install completes. Once this is done, you're on the home straight.

4) From the copy of the install folder, manually extract the contents of each deleted .rar file using 7zip (NOT Winrar) into the game directory.

5) Run the game. If it works, crack open something alcoholic as you've definitely earned it.

6) If not, or if you seem to have catastrophic bugs - or if you don't mind spending a few more minutes to be sure, check that any files flagged with CRC errors have actually been
extracted into the game directory. If not, you may need to extract these individually.

This is
also why you need 7zip, as winrar will usually refuse to extract files
with CRC errors. If not, come back and let me know of any errors along the way and I'll see if I can help find a way round them.

For reference, this is a slightly different and (in my opinion) less complex way of implementing the same fix proposed by Galdred of Dat earlier in this thread - and quoted in the first post on this page. It also involves fooling the installer into installing, and also relies on being able to manually extract working versions of the problem files afterwards.

If there are any files that absolutely refuse to be extracted, or are extracted with genuine errors in them making the game buggy, it should be possible to get you copies of the extracted versions from my install.

You might think the EA installer has defeated you, but there's still hope - keep the faith. :P

Thanks a ton Woz, I'll give it another try as soon as I'm able (might be a day or so, busy with rl after the holidays). I'll post the results here.

EDIT: Following these steps I finally got the installation to complete! Unfortunately, even after I extracted the deleted files manually, the game still gives me an error and "quit unexpectedly" right after launch. While extracting, I got dozens of files flagged as either "Data error" or "CRC failed", - "File is broken."
I'm going to take a break from this project and soothe my brain with some Team Fortress 2 for awhile.

I ran into the EXACT same issues as Raphite1. I was able to get the game installed on my work laptop, so then I started trying somethings. I figured if it was a DVD error on my desktop, I'd get around that by using the DVD Drive in my laptop. I shared out my laptop DVD drive and tried to install over the network. FAIL...same error Data Error Occurred on the anim.rar file. I copied the DVD contents to my laptop hard drive and then copied the folder to my desktop and tried to install...FAIL...same error. The ONLY way I got it to run was to copy the installed Program Files\\Dragon Age folder from my laptop to my desktop. Then I was able to run the DAConfigure file that allowed me to put all the shortcuts where they were supposed to be. This didn't install the DAUpdater service, so I found a file online that helped install the service from this thread http://forums.impuls.../368287/page/1/

The game seems to run fine now, but I'm thinking there's some hardware within my Dell XPS 630i desktop that is causing CRC errors in some .rar files. I've also had issues when trying to patch WoW on my desktop as well.

READ THIS - FIXED THIS FOR ME

As most on this thread have had, my issue was a corrupt data error on install. I found a post that gave me an idea - followed it and problem solved. It has to do with DEP which basically protects a system from some old-school tricks used by hackers.

This fix will leave DEP on for all programs, which is good, but disable it for the installer allowing it to function correctly. Dont ask me why, because I have had it up to my eyeballs with computers doing dumb stuff and wasting my time.

Figured you all could benefit since I find many answers from boards like this, its only fair to spread the knowledge :)

Should work for DL'ed versions as well, however you may need to turn off DEP for the downloader and DL again, not sure. GL!

--------post that helped me--------

Fix #2: DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is active. If this is Vista (I know Vista has problems with this feature) then you should disable DEP for any program you use frequently. To access DEP in Vista, right-click "Computer" in your Start Menu. Choose Properties from the dropdown list. The list on the left of the System Properties window has "Advanced System Settings". Go there. From there, you can click the Performance Settings button near the top, which then shows you the Data Execution Prevention tab at the top of the next window. By default, DEP is turned on for ALL PROGRAMS. The 2nd option allows you to turn it on except for programs you specify. Choose this option. You will have to restart your machine for changes to take effect. Use the "Add" button at the bottom to add the Setup.exe file that starts the Dragon Age Origins install to the list, then click OK and try to install again.

You totally rock my world, Mutantant! Your fix enabled me to install DA on my XPS 630i! Prior to that I had been playing on my laptop with an inferior graphics card. Can't wait to check out the game again.

Thank you, thank you. I am humbled by your presence.

Aha...that would make some sense if some of these issues were being caused by DEP.

Goddammit, I spent ages looking at whether anti-virus and anti-spyware programs might potentially be a cause, but I forgot all about DEP and never thought to try turning it off! Whoever remembered that 'wonderful' windows feature deserves a beer on the house.

For XP users, DEP can be found under Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced Tab -> Settings (under performance sub-heading) -> Data Exeuction Prevention Tab, and then apply the fix mentioned two posts above.

This may not necessarily make the installer run fine, as it depends on the actual cause of the problem, but its a damn handy idea to try and only takes a few moments.

Cheers Mutantant.

A different issue ...but I'm new to this lol
I have no text display at the opening screens for log in etc...
I updated everything but my marital status, everything meets requirements. I went through tech support and spoke with Dylan (Like that's his name...heh heh)

I have the DDE version of DA:O and am using the EADM to download and install. I purchased the game in November, downloaded and installed no problems...did 2 full play-throughs and was nearly at the landsmeet with my third character when I had to do a wipe/factory re-image on my machine. Now, when trying to re-download and install DA I get a "cannot install due to data error" message every time. I've updated all my drivers, BIOS, everything. I've tried nearly everything in this thread with no luck. I've re-downloaded and attempted install 8 times now and I'm getting frustrated.

I went to live-chat support yesterday and it wasn't all that helpful. The guy asked me if my disk was scratched or something AFTER I'd already told him it was the Digital Deluxe Version, lol. Anyway, he finally suggested creating a new Administrator account on my PC and using that to DL and install. Does anyone have a clue if that will even work? (I'm trying it now, but I'm not hopeful after 8 fails, heh) Thanks for any help... this is truly a bit depressing.

(and and Hi there...this is my first post on the forums, I just realized :) )

I think the problem may have something to do with the account you use to install the game (although if it's a CRC error extracting the .rar's, that shouldn't make any difference). I installed this game once successfully as the admin account on my PC, but had to reinstall windows to fix an unrelated problem. When I tried to install the game again, I used my normal user account (providing it with the admin password), and kept getting data errors during the install. I saw elphieeee's post, and decided to give it a try logged in as the admin, and it worked the first time.

Like I said, it makes no sense, but if you have a separate admin account from your user account (and you generally should), it might be worth a try.

Note that I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I had once installed the game without problems too; after accidentally deleting a data file, I tried to reinstall the game and had the same errors. It is indeed an interesting problem we're having...

Tell me. I hava XP 32bit. 3gig RAM etc etc. When I try installing from the iso it give me a FAILED INSTALL DATA ERROR at around 35%. I am not installing to C:/program files/EA. I am installing to another internal drive. Could that be a problem. I doubt it because Coiln Mcrae Dirt 2 installed fine. Will try your workaround and post the results.

THE SOLUTION:

I've spent countless frustrating hours figuring this out and I must say the following solution WORKS !!!

First if you have the install on dvd copy everything to a file on your pc.

Name it anything you like

Now get the RAR REPAIR TOOL (find it on torrents etc) or here u go :

http://www.kickassto...l-t1317408.html

Now the part thats going to get lots of you reaching for a very strong alcoholic beverage:

1. Using Winrar test EACH and EVERY archive that you have copied from the disc

2. A few should come up with CRC errors (ie these are the culprit archives when u install)

3, Make a note of the archives that are damaged

4. Open Rar Repair tool and open each archive (only one at a time)

5. Make sure you have created a seperate folder called Repairs somewhere

6. Point to this folder when Repair Tool asks for a destination path for the archive you are repairing

7. Once repaired right click that particular FOLDER with winrar and click add to archive

8. Point to the damaged rar archive you had just repaired and winrar will add the now repaired files to it

9. DO THIS TO ALL THE DAMAGED ARCHIVE ****IT TAKES AWHILE SO RELAX***

10. Once done run the installer

11. It will say unarchiving Repaired Archives

ALL DONE> WOrks like a charm but just horribly time consuming.

Any questions please email me on mastermamo@gmail.com

Cheers and good luck
