Installation Failed: Data error

I end up installing on a cheap Dell laptop.
Transferred all files to an external hard drive.
Changed the 'installmanifest_en.ini' file as per the post.
Run Setup.
Copied all files from external hard drive to correct folder on Desktop.
Now to enjoy.
Cheers

Personally, I'd try absolutely every other method listed here - particularly the .rar repairs, turning off data execution prevention and making sure you're installing from a profile with Administrator rights, as they're pretty good at handling 'phantom' corruptions.
If none of the fixes in this thread work, you might want to discuss with EA the possibility of getting a replacement DVD (if you've got the downloaded version, a re-download will almost certainly fix a genuine corruption issue).
If they honestly can't (or won't) help, then I'd be open in principle to running a test with someone to see if a confirmed uncorrupted file fixes the problem. Should that work, I'd be happy to discuss with someone at EA Tech or Bioware whether a formal way of sharing uncorrupted files could be picked up as part of their Tech Support process.
I'm not really all that happy about setting a precedent with uploading core game files for people to download as a first-stage fix, due to the copyright infringement issues attached.

I wanted to put something in this thread because a few people have independently asked via PM if I'll send them uncorrupted files, and I wanted to make it clear to people navigating here that:
a) I don't believe this is necessary. Since the lastest DA:O patch as far as I'm aware, no-one has failed to successfully install after following advice from EA or the numerous potential fixes in this thread (or a combination of both).
As stated, there has been no need for additional fixes in the last 4 months, but if someone does have a new variant of this problem then I'd be happy to help explore it.
If a file does turn out to be corrupt, the sensible approach is to contact the vendor to arrange a replacement DVD, which should resolve the issue.

Maybe this post will motivate Bioware or EA to make an official fix.

I did not have this problem, but a friend of mine had it when he tried to reinstall the game after he reinstalled Windows (He was using XP). He almost went crazy, but then he downloaded a pirated version and it works for him now. Though I don't know if that's legal (maybe it is if you own the game) and if patches and stuff will work.
Maybe this post will motivate Bioware or EA to make an official fix.
He did not need to "pirate the game." You did not mention if your friend tryed downloading from EA download manager/store (Which is free if you own the game retail.)

The above is the EA Support answer for the EA digital download of the game. The hard copy answer ends, if no other fix works (per many threads with Data Error in the topic), by suggesting getting this digital copy . .eclarkdog wrote...
First note that the resolution appears to be keyed on DEP (Data Execution Prevention). However, I am going to list all the things EA Support had me perform to eliminate any variables. Again, these steps are applied from the perspective of having downloaded via EADM. Here we go:
(Note: I have Vista 32-bit so please use any counterparts to these steps for other OS)
1) You are going to have to download the game again. Delete the cache files by clicking the red "x" button in EADM next to the download
2) Create a folder called "EADM" in your "C:>User>UserName>Documents" folder
3) Right click on the EADM icon in taskbar (bottom right on most machinces), select settings, and point your download path to this new location
4) close EADM completely by right clicking on same icon and choosing exit
(note: the above steps may not be key to this but we should try to follow all steps. this option can help get passed certain UAC controls)
5) Hit the Windows button and "R" key to open the RUN bar, type in "msconfig", click Okay
6) Select the "Tools" Tab
7) Scroll down to "Disable UAC" option, highlight this option and click "Launch"
8) You should be asked to restart your system
(ok...now this next step I think was key to resolving the issue)
9) Open the Control Panel and Select "Advance System Settings" (or you can right click on the "Computer" icon on your desktop (the old "My Computer"), if you have it and select "Properties"
10) You now have the "System Properties" panel open - many of you are already familiar with this
11) Go to the "Advanced" tab
12) Under "Performance" section click the settings button
13) The "Performance Options" panel should now be open
14) Goto the "Data Execution Prevention" (DEP) tab
15) it's important to follow the next steps closely to make sure the right file is selected
16) Click the Radio button next to the "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:" option. The box below it should activate
17) Click the "Add" button below the box that enables you to browse for executables
18) Browse to the following directory or the like "C:>Program Files>Electronic Arts>EADM"
19) Choose the application named simply "Core" (there's a green EA ball icon next to it)
20) Click Open
21) In the Box on the "Performance Options" below DEP radio buttons you should now see "EA Download Manager" with a check box next to it and a check in that box
22) Click apply and okay to close the panel
23) I can't recall if it prompts for a restart at this point but I suggest you do this regardless.
24) Once your machine restarts you can now reopen EADM and redownload the game -then install. You may want to check the options again to make sure the download path is correct. The game should install fine now.
My thinking here is that for others that have had issue with the digital downloads they can use a variation of the above steps. For instance, I have used D2D often and know that they have their own download manager. You may choose to add that executable to the DEP bypass option above. You may want to redirect the download path for this game as well, but i think it general defaults to the user>\\\\\\\\downloads folder or the like anyway.
I apologize, but I can't think of an option for those installing from disk. I recommend logging a ticket with EA Support if you don't have success, as well as others that find the above steps unsuccessful. I found them very responsive.
I hope everyone has success!

"Your search for « data error » returned 13 result/s."
One such thread contains this information about the hard copy variation of failed install:
(Created 2 months ago)
Something on the game disks is incompatible with some optical drives (in my case, with Plextor DVD drives, which forced me to take extraordinary measures. Mass Effect 2 and Fallout 3 also acted up the same way.
I tried copying to folders on the hard disk (two folders for the two Mass Effect 2 disks), and that didn't work. I ended up using the Sony DVD drive on my older PC that is used for File and Print serever chores on the LAN, and installed across my LAN from there to the game boxes in another room here.
You can swap DVD drives from one PC to another, borrow an external DVD drive to use, do what I had to do, or get set up at the EA store for downloads, for which the hard copy's CD-Key will unlock a digital download that doesn't have that disk error.

This thread is basically about trying to perform the install. You already did that. The "stopped working" error message isn't about the install, it's about your hardware and software environment that the game is attempting to run in, and a separate problem report, completed to an adequate extent to attempt a diagnosis, is needed when that happens:KISavior wrote...
got it install using the empty .rar archives method but when i try to play the game the graphic showing Morrigan and darkspawn pops up, the game attempts to open then i get a Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working

P. S. I see that you joined the Social Forums a month ago. Have you had the game working before now on some other, different computer? Or did you join for Mass Effect 2, and get DA a month later? (Sorry about that, console players, I never even thought about any other platform, considering where we are right now.)
