sorry, i saw that raphite had a similar issue and woz tried to help them out, so i assumed if they figured anything out they might reply to my posting in this thread.

i'll shoot them a PM instead.

also i joined because i had DAO and awakenings for Xbox because at the time of DAO release i didnt have the comp i have and today i decided to trade in my xbox versions for the PC

edit:
NOOB ALERT!!! NOOB ALERT!!!!
well fixed my issue of "stopped working" and the problem was very very simple (new to pc gaming)

when i manually extracted the archives i extracted them to respective archive name for example audio.rar>7zip>add to \\\\audio instead of just simply extracting the contents (thus combining all packages, modules etc) this of course caused path confusion with the launcher which is why my game was shutting down prematurely

thought this could be added for clarification for future NOOBS such as myself. shoot me if this is far more than a brain fart.

p.s. this game is so much better on PC than xbox

...and I just responded to your PM before seeing this thread, and you came to the correct answer yourself. ;)

So yes, for future reference, anyone doing the manual method that I described a few pages ago - when it comes to manually extracting the files you intentionally removed to get the install to work, you need to make sure they go to the directories they're supposed to be in, not just the root DAO folder.

You should be able to do this by extracting to the main directory and letting winzip/winrar reconstruct the file location, which it usually does automatically. If they end up in the main directory, check your winzip/winrar settings.

If you really can't get it to work automatically, look at the path for the files inside winzip/winrar and make sure you put the extracted version in the place where it indicates they should go.

...still somewhat nonplussed that this issue continues to plague people so far after launch, but at least we have successful ways around it. ;)

I have found a workaround, provided you can install the game on another computer:

backup the installmainfest_en.ini file,

edit the installmanifest_en.ini, and delete everything but the first following lines, and replace NomberofFiles=14 by NumberOfFiles=0:

[Response]
NumberOfFiles=0
NumberOfInis=0
AdditionalFileSize=500000
Build=9343
SKU=WWRetail

launch the installer.

It will skip the unpacking phase, and just copy some exe and update registry entries

The next step is copying everything from the original folder to the new game location, WITHOUT replacing any file (select skip all when prompted about replacing existing file with the same name, but merge all when prompted about merging folders with the same name).

The shortcut might not be there, but you can launch the game from the exe (DALauncher.exe, or DAorigins.exe)

If you don't have another PC, you can unpack the files manually to your DA folder with the 7Z archiver program afterwards. You can then retry unpacking the corrupted files, sometimes it works(it seems to be semi random).

I'd just like to throw a thank you out for this particular fix as it worked out perfectly for myself (two computers, installed fine on my girlfriend's but mine was the one with problems extracting some core.rar).  I'd also just like to add that if you launch the \\\\\\\\bin_ship\\\\\\\\DAorginsconfig.exe after doing these steps there is a 'repair' section which will create any launch icons etc for you as well.

Thanks dude, this worked out fine for me. I had the same problem as some other people, Data Error failed at different files all the time and I could install + run it on 2 other computers, but not mine..

Did EA even comment on this bug yet?

Seems to me it might be something with our Hard disks or RAM?

Anyhow, now I can enjoy this great game! Only took me 10 hours + a format...

This ALL worked THANK you so much and thank god i have a external HDD and a new laptop with a new win 7 64bit install.

I can say this AS much as i love DAO i wont be buying the second one if this **** CONTIUNES.

Well, I am having issues with the ENV.RAR file it seems. I'm downloading for the 3rd time, also at the same time I am downloading it on my mother's computer, just in case it corrupts again, maybe I'll get lucky and it won't corrupt on hers, then I can transfer the files.

I've talked to EA, told them I tried their solution, and they told me to uninstall the game, EADM, then reinstall EADM and it should work....

Guess I'l find out, huh?

Has EA or Bioware said anything about this yet? Like when an official fix will arrive?

This whole thing has been a nightmare. I got this game for christmas and have spent the last five days trying to install the game. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and my computer is well above the recommended specs. I've tried nearly every fix I've came across. The closest I've came to playing the game is when I manually extracted all the files myself. This allowed me to play the game, however the screen was black with nothing showing but the dialogue, and maybe a floating head or two. Every other method, including downloading the game, and copying the files to my hard drive turn up the data error. It's usually random when the installer decides to crash, sometimes it will make it right to the end while other times it will crash near the start.

These are the affected files:

packages/core/data/anims.erf
packages/core/data/gui.erf
packages/core/data/textures.erf
packages/core/env/den510d/den510d_2_10_0.gpu.rim
packages/core/high/texturepack.erf

If I'm lucky, the installer will make it past some of those files, but it's never gone past the texturepack.erf.

This whole thing has driven me mad. If anyone has maybe got some other less known fixes, I'd love to hear them.

Yeah my issue is with "packages/core/env/den510d/den510d_2_10_0.gpu.rim"

Mine's a corrupt file and the archive ends unexpectedly immediately afterwards. In my case it's the campaign vo_english archive and the corrupt file is epi_shale.fsb followed by a whole lot of nothing cause the archive ends.

I have the exact same problem. I need the epi_shale.fev file as well as the following files.
If anyone could send them to me I would be so grateful. If anyone is able to help, PM me.

Btw, I bought DAO a few days ago, and it's amazing that the game is still in the stores, one year later when the corrupt files is still an issue. :mellow:

Although my once-vaunted memory is no longer so reliable, I seem to recall that the game comes with a RAR engine of its own that potentially may be in conflict with different versions of some file compression utility, if you previously installed a "wrong" version of RAR even, so that when the unpacking occurs, it's not the source that has problems, but the utility itself.  Because of that, given that the digital version seems to share the same RAR engine, there is a potential for the unpacking process to fail once again.

You need to go to EA's Help page and log into the chatline's waiting queue.  I think they know about that situation.  For all that I recall clearly now, this comment may be somewhere within this particular lengthy thread right now.  If it isn't, and EA says something similar, so you have to uninstall some packing / unpacking program to allow EA's RAR to work correctly, you might do everyone a favor afterward, assuming it works as advertised, and expand on your comment.

Its somewhat depressing that this issue is still plaguing people.

Absolut / Ludmilla - I had very similar issues to you initially, and was one of the mild nutcases who spend several hours to discover a manual workaround in the days before EA Tech Support recognised it as a problem and investigated possible fixes.

Even now, I'm not 100% sure they have a universal fix for the problem, as there are a few potential causes for this error, but if you're finding the same file apparently corrupting over and over, then its worth trying out the workaround I put up on page 8.

From experience in helping people on this thread, most of the 'corrupted' files aren't corrupted at all - as Gorath mentioned, assuming there's nothing wrong with your RAM or HDD, then it could easily be an unpacking error, and we cracked some ways around that issue. ;)

Feel free to drop me a PM if you run into challenges or confusion with the manual workaround.

READ THIS - FIXED THIS FOR ME

As most on this thread have had, my issue was a corrupt data error on install. I found a post that gave me an idea - followed it and problem solved. It has to do with DEP which basically protects a system from some old-school tricks used by hackers.

This fix will leave DEP on for all programs, which is good, but disable it for the installer allowing it to function correctly. Dont ask me why, because I have had it up to my eyeballs with computers doing dumb stuff and wasting my time.

Figured you all could benefit since I find many answers from boards like this, its only fair to spread the knowledge :)

Should work for DL'ed versions as well, however you may need to turn off DEP for the downloader and DL again, not sure. GL!

--------post that helped me--------
Fix #2: DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is active. If this is Vista (I know Vista has problems with this feature) then you should disable DEP for any program you use frequently. To access DEP in Vista, right-click "Computer" in your Start Menu. Choose Properties from the dropdown list. The list on the left of the System Properties window has "Advanced System Settings". Go there. From there, you can click the Performance Settings button near the top, which then shows you the Data Execution Prevention tab at the top of the next window. By default, DEP is turned on for ALL PROGRAMS. The 2nd option allows you to turn it on except for programs you specify. Choose this option. You will have to restart your machine for changes to take effect. Use the "Add" button at the bottom to add the Setup.exe file that starts the Dragon Age Origins install to the list, then click OK and try to install again.
-----------------------

I downloaded the ME2 digital deluxe edition from the EA store, and was struggling with the Data Error bug when trying to install it. Just thought I'd mention that this DEP fix solved the problem for me.

Edit: I just added the ME2 setup.exe to the DEP's ignore list, rebooted, then installed it without a problem. I didn't have to re-download anything.

I seem to have cracked it also; using a combination of copying the DVD to hard disk and setting the setup.exe as a DEP exception. The only problem I have now is getting it to continue on with disk 2...

Update: disk 2 issue solved by copying that DVD to the same temp folder as the 1st...although not over writing existing files (2 of them) :D
