Just FYI y'all: I tried installing on 2 separate machines, both running Vista Home Premium 64-bit, using an image of the disc (to eliminate the drive as a cause). On one it worked the 1st time, on the other it got stuck extracting at the same place every time. Completely random, and I tried *alllll* the work-a-rounds. (Copy to hard-drive, repair the archive, (core.rar in my case,) update InstallShield, shorten the installation path name...*everything*.)

So, right now, it looks like the only *true* solution is get a different computer and hope that it works. =/

I really think the copy protection EA is using in this game is the reason behind all these corrupted installation problems but they will never admit it.

I have found a workaround, provided you can install the game on another computer:

backup the installmainfest_en.ini file,

edit the installmanifest_en.ini, and delete everything but the first following lines, and replace NomberofFiles=14 by NumberOfFiles=0:

[Response]
NumberOfFiles=0
NumberOfInis=0
AdditionalFileSize=500000
Build=9343
SKU=WWRetail

launch the installer.

It will skip the unpacking phase, and just copy some exe and update registry entries

The next step is copying everything from the original folder to the new game location, WITHOUT replacing any file (select skip all when prompted about replacing existing file with the same name, but merge all when prompted about merging folders with the same name).

The shortcut might not be there, but you can launch the game from the exe (DALauncher.exe, or DAorigins.exe)

If you don't have another PC, you can unpack the files manually to your DA folder with the 7Z archiver program afterwards. You can then retry unpacking the corrupted files, sometimes it works(it seems to be semi random).

DATA ERROR FIX!

1. Copy the whole DVD of the game to your hard drive.

2. Look where the installation crashes (it will show which archive is currently extracting).

3. Go to where you copied the DVD contents, find that archive and try to extract it in some temp folder. Chances are you will get a CRC error.

4. Next, you will need a program called RAR Repair Tool. Trial version of this program only opens RARs which are very small in size. Full version costs $45. So you either gotta pay......or.......rapidshare maybe?

5. Open RAR Repair Tool and select the corrupted archive. Next, select where you want to save the repaired version of the extracted folders. Click on repair. It will go through scanning each file in the archive and will specify where CRC error is and will fix it.

6. Once the fix is done, go to where you specified the REPAIRED folder.

7. At this point you will need to download WinRAR. Trial version is free and is good for what we are trying to do here.

8. Right-click on the fixed folder and select Add To Archive. Next, browse to the original corrupted RAR and select it. It will update that archive with any new and fixed files in your FIXED folder.

YOU ARE DONE!

Run the install again and it should be a breeze. Should there be any more data errors further into the installation, repeat the same steps above!

This fix is the result of 4 hours funking around the game files and trial and error. LOL!

hey guys i downloaded the game and installed but i get a problem with the env file and it kills the install so i used winrar and tracked down one file was causing the problem
the file is lak300d.rim
should be located in core/env/lak300d

so i deleted the file and then the install works perfect, but missing this file will probably corrupt something so is it possible for someone to send me this file i will be really grateful

thanks

I'm having this exact problem on a Dell XPS 630i. I'd be curious to know if other people with the same system are having this problem or if anyone with the same system has gotten the game to work.

Another fix along the same lines posted by Galdred and The_DiMoN (but which doesn't require two machines or a 3rd party fixing program) is:

f you're doing it from the DVD, you'll need to first copy everything onto your hard drive. If you downloaded, you're one step ahead already. In any case, once done, make copies of your textures.rar, core.rar, env.rar and any other .rars containing files that are bugging out during the install.

Then go into the originals and delete every file that's over 150mb or so (and any other files that are causing problems). The installer should then run fine. Once its done, go to the copies of the .rar files and manually extract the files you deleted using 7zip (or any other program that will extract files from .rar even if it detects CRC errors) into your dragon age game folder.

You should be able to get 7zip to use the file structure in the .rar files to put the extracted data in the right place - if not, if you open the .rar file you can see the directories that the files ultimately need to be put into.

I'd also recommend trying Peter Gozenya's fix, as the exact cause of the problem varies between different people. From the responses on this forum, one of the other of our suggestions tends to fix most install errors.

Anyone still having difficulty is welcome to drop me a message and I'm happy to help troubleshoot.

The problem certainly isn't confined to Dell xps 630i machines, although its possible that the exact fix for them might differ slightly thanks to a number of potential variables.

As stated in my post before, and elsewhere, I completely sympathise with people struck by the data error issue as it took me three days to find a fully-functional workaround. Hence why I'm offering to set time aside to help individuals as well as just post generic suggestions - but I really do need you guys to work with me a bit here. ;)

So far, the main four fixes relate to:

1) Update your InstallShield kernel (http://support.insta...ernelUpdate.exe). Retry the installation.

2) Rename your InstallShield folder in C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\ to InstallShieldOld, retry the installation. NB - once the install finally works (or nothing works) change your InstallShield folder name back again.

3a) If using the downloaded version, go straight to 3b. If using the DVD version, copy everything to a location on the hard drive.

3b) In the data directory, make copies of textures.rar, env.rar and core.rar. In the originals, delete any files held within the .rars that are over 150mb. Retry the installation using the installer in the root folder of the files copied from the DVD. If other .rars cause problems, make copies of them, delete the offending file(s) from the original and try again.

After the install completes (as it now should), manually extract the copies of your various .rar files to the Dragon Age installation folder (default: C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age) and don't overwrite any existing files. I recommend 7zip for this as it extracts files even when it detects CRC errors. Normally these errors are minor or practically non-existant and don't affect gameplay.

4) If the above still doesn't create a working game, you're in the unfortunate small minority where we're still a little in uncharted waters about exactly what to do to fix things - and so we need as much information from you as possible.

Alternative proposed solutions at this stage involve using 3rd party programs to fix the CRC errors in the files (winrar and 7zip's fix functionality doesn't generally work) and tinkering around with how the game actually decides what to install in order to get a working game installation, then relying on manual extraction for *all* of the game files - preferably copied directly from a machine where the install does work.

Just to really, really be clear. If the first three fixes don't work, we do need more detailed information from you about exactly what the problem is and what has gone wrong at each of the previous three stages.

The best way to help those of us who've spent a while looking at solutions and sharing what works is to give as much information as possible on the error message(s), what file(s) cause it, whether its always the same place in the install or not, what fixes you've tried and what happens when you try them (same error, or new error) or what happens when you try to load the game after the install seems to have worked. There are bugs that can kick in on trying to load the game even if the install works fine.

Again, this is essentially no real difference to what the EA support guys will ask you about, although I personally don't want your dxdiag information as other people are better at spotting potential issues there than I am.

I'm happy to continue my personal crusade to develop workaround in advance of waiting for official solutions from EA or Bioware, but I need information from those still afflicted to achieve this. ;)

Updating your installshield can be a lil bit tricky for some people. here's a guide on how to do it;

I can't copy 'movies.rar' onto my hard drive. As it's transferring it gets to about 80% or so and an error pops up saying: "Cannot read from the source file or disk." Any ideas? Thanks for your help so far.

Thanks for taking the time to be our guide Wozearly.

I wonder if you could clarify 3b slightly. I've made copies of the three files you mention (core, env, and textures) to a different location on my hard drive, then deleted everything in the /data directory greater than 150 mb. After I've deleted those files, I run autorun to begin the install process, but it seems to be immediately aware of the missing files, and pops up a window that says "insert next disk (disk 1)", with options to retry or cancel. Retrying does nothing and cancelling kills the install process.

edit: nvm -- played around with it and figured out that we're deleting individual files within the rars rather than the entire rar files themselves. Sry 'bout that.

No worries pauldaniel, I'll edit my post to make that a wee bit clearer. ;)

Unable - that's a bit of a bugger. Does it work better if you use 7zip to extract the movies.rar file to somewhere on your hard drive? Sometimes the zip programs can work magic that a simple copy attempt struggles with.

If that doesn't work, I'm a bit stumped, as it suggests there's an error on the DVD itself, which realistically means giving it a very careful clean with a damp, non-abrasive cloth or tissue, drying it off and then trying again. If that still doesn't fix the problem, you may want to try it on someone else's machine to see if its possible to copy the file and then transfer it using either a 500mb (or over) flash drive, memory stick, etc.

If it can't be copied off the DVD at all and the error is permanent, you may have to see about getting the DVD replaced, which is a mild pain but, thankfully, is the responsibility of the retailer who sold you the game.

I gave 7zip a go and and it didn't work. Looks like the file that's causing the problem is 'game_intro_head.bik'
Trying to extract with 7zip resulted in a CRC error, and testing the archive with 7zip resulted in this message: "Data error (cyclic redundancy error)."
I've tried it now on two different computers - same problem. Unless by some miracle cleaning the disk fixes the problem, I guess I'll have to return it. Thanks for the help though.

Edit: Nope, cleaning it didn't work. I'll return it tomorrow after work. Knowing my luck I'll probably be back here tomorrow to ask for more help.

Feel free.

Provided 7zip can extract the specific file with an error in it to the hard drive, even if its marked as having an error, its possible to get around the issue you're having. Its just a bit manual and fiddly as you'll need to extract all the other files in that .rar, then the offending one separately, and then re-create the .rar file for the install (without the offending one), then put the offending one in the right place afterwards, in a similar way to the rest of the fix.

Unfortunately, if the specific file is so screwed that 7zip refuses to extract it, there's not much hope for that option...

I took it back and the employees actually laughed at me for having Windows Vista, confidently proclaiming that the disk was not the problem. They wouldn't give me a refund, which was okay I guess because that's not what I wanted. They gave me another copy of the game and it worked perfectly. Guess they were wrong. Just wanted to say thanks again for your help.

@Wozearly -- thanks man, I used your fix and it worked. In hindsight I've realized two things: 1) I could have programmed my own game in the time it took to get this one to install and 2) EA should be paying you, because their support staff did nothing for me and you fixed me up. Thanks again.

I spent 4 days of my 5 day Thanksgiving weekend trying to install the retail PC DVD copy of Dragon Age. I started with windows xp x64 but upgraded to a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. I bought a new $200 video card. I tried the file swapping, repairing the archive, deleting corrupted files. The only way I got the game installed and working properly was using two computers--my primary is the desktop and the second is the laptop--and transferring from the laptop the omitted files from the install on my desktop. Yeah, that's right, the laptop installed it without a problem. The only thing I didn't try is replacing my DVD-RW and Blu-Ray drives, or replace the disc.

My copy installed fine on my XP x64 box using the retail dvd read by an old NEC drive. There DLC does not work.

Now I have a new Windows 7 box with a new Sony NEC drive. Tried installing there to see if DLC would work: data error.

****ing sad.

I was able to resolve my "data error" installation.
It seems the data on the DVD is packed tightly and if your DVD player doesn't read every byte corectly, the installation immedietely aborts and uninstalls.
I was getting the error towards the end of the installation (25 minutes), only it have it bomb and uninstall everything.

The trick is to copy everything onto your hard disk and install from there. From the hard disk, the installation will go much faster.

The second task is to identify which rar file is generating a CRC error. I used 7-zip and unzipped each one individually, turns out campaign_vo_english.rar, the very last file was the problem.

I loaded the DVD on a different computer and copied that file from it to my gameing computer, extracted it with 7-zip and was CRC error free.

Ran the install from my hard disk using the error free version of the vo_english.rar file and the installation completed successfully.

The store where I bought the PC version from allowed me to take it back and exchange it for the more expensive, technically inferior 360 version. At some point I wanted to play the PC version and Steam had the game on for $39 this week. I wanted to see if my problems with the game were due to my PC or EA's installer. I'm happy to report the game installed fine over Steam so it must be something in EA's installer that doesn't agree with my PC. Now if the PC version didn't crash so often (using Windows7) I would be really happy. I just have to keep using that QuickSave button for now.

My sneaking suspicion is that the majority, if not entireity, of the blame lies at the EA installer's door. However, when 7zip is also struggling with the same files, its possible that it could be something to do with the data files themselves. Hard to say for certain - I'll let EA/Bioware get to the bottom of it. ;)

That'd be nice, but it ain't gonna happen. ^_^
