It's hard to see from the videos, but is Vivienne black (as in actually black) or just tan like Isabela? Because it would be nice to see some different races in DA.
Vivienne is black as in black.
Unless she makes it into the promotional art. Then she will suddenly be a white woman.
All my rage.
I really hope this does not happen just...no.

The horns on her hat really give me a maleficent vibe, which is pretty cool.
Near the end of the game it is revealed she actually was the evil villain and betrays you. Extra dialogue options if you romanced her.

Edit: Though I am curious to see how her apparent "pro-circle" views play out. Is she just in support of it because that's where she's from and she had a good enough time of it, or is she going to be a religiously zealous in her circle-love?

The only thing I don't like about Vivienne that she's pretty much exactly what I was planning for my Inquisitor in terms of looks, personality and class. Oh well, back to the drawing board <_<
I know how you feel, but then I realised that we had elves, so that threw everything up in the air anyway.

Come on, Maria. That's not really fair, is it? I can't speak for the kats over on the ME Team but we know the Dragon Age team is better than that. In all the promos with Isabela she looked dark skinned to me. Vivienne is black and she'll stay black even for any promos. Not to mention that would be a (*bleep*) storm even EA wouldn't be willing to kick up.

Don't do this to Vivienne Bioware. Thanks.

I sense much crossover-shipping with Rumplestiltskin in her future...

That GI article did her no justice at all. I was pretty unimpressed with her at first, but after finding out she's a WOC and seeing her in action I'm so excited to recruit her.

Sure they whitewashed her but Isabela was never black (or even 'Indian' as someone described her) in the first place really. It's blatantly obvious from her appearance in game that she's about as brown as a white person from Sicily or California.
Which is why it's nice to see a more varied representation in DAI.

is this still such a touchy subject in the US (for example)?
i don't know, i don't see that many black people where i live, but if i do, i don't treat them like lessers or anything (i just don't care if someone is black, white or anything else (hell, i probably wouldn't have any problems with aliens, as long as they didn't try to take over or something))
greetings LAX
ps: if they want to bleach her, they can do that - it is no concern of mine (i like the way she looks though)

why are people so excited about a black character (not that i am against it, far from it. It's just, skin colour is no concern of mine at all - i don't care much about it...i have no pre-conceived notions about black people (or any other non-white people))?

Just because it is not important to you doesn't mean it isn't important to others.
Generally, people of racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities tend to like to see positive portrayal of characters that are like them in media.

You tried making this point in my thread ( that was wiped off the face of the forums. Hmmmm. Hopefully the message was received, though.)
Who care's whether or not you consider Isabela to be black. The point is that her skin was radically lighter in promo material as opposed to in-game.
I don't want that to happen to Vivienne.

African black.
Wonder how Gaider will explain her back story.
Doesn't seem to be Rivani

I'm also interested in her ethnicity. She has features that we haven't seen yet in the DA world. Now, it could be an outcome of the new engine and they will say that she is Rivaini and this is how all Rivaini look now (which would be fine with me). Kind of similar to how different Isabela looked from DA: O to DA2.
Or she could be from a different ethnicity that we just haven't come across yet. I'm really fascinated by her at this point. She's got a Ferelden accent, but was in line for the First Enchanter position in Orlais. She's our first pro-Circle mage since Wynne (who was a moderate, really). And she's a PoC that appears different than any we've seen before. Loving this so far.

Isabela also had a Ferelden accent, right? Maybe that's how they speak in Rivaini and Vivienne is indeed from there. I'd love to go to Rivain and meet their Seers, but I'm guessing the Inquisition won't travel that far

That goes for pretty much everybody, though. Even Varric got a make-over already (I like it, personally!)

But isn't part of being in a "colour blind" society not really minding whomever is present?
I understand have a person of colour is a good thing and I agree it's about time but how to you bring her/him to "the screen" without being overtly racist? I guess what I mean is, ok now we have a woman of colour and if she "acts like" woman of colour people will scream racism and if they do nothing to acknowledge that she is a woman of colour people will scream she is being "white washed". I just worry this will be another thing people will end up going mad over because of factions on both sides.
I hold my breath and hope for the best.

She looks Arabic to me...Egyptian or if not Arabic, Ethopian is my next guess.

I totally don't want to derail this topic, so I'll make this really brief. I don't think a color blind society is a good thing. I think a society where we recognize diversity and have representation from all "colors" in our media is the best thing. So I DO want to see PoC's in all of my games for that reason and that's why I LOVE Vivienne's inclusion in this game.
