They've been working on this for over 2 years now and have a folder that takes up a server each so 10 servers just for this( 1 for the inquisitor and 1 each for the companions) and the whole iconic look is being blown out of proportion by some people.Silfren wrote...
Last I heard, it was emphasised that all companions would have an iconic look regardless of how much customization was available But, given how much more time there is before the game is released, I'm not sure we can definitively say yet what we can or can't do.Spectre slayer wrote...
We can change their outfits, we can put them in different types of armour and clothing, a mage can wear armour and heavy armour including Vivienne, and we can change individual pieces of armour and clothing to look anyway we want to and see how it looks on them before equipping them and seeing how it looks in them.sandalisthemaker wrote...
I'm thinking that the overall "shape" of each armor/ robe will be consistent when placed on a particular character.Master Shiori wrote...

I was under the impression you can change thier outfits, but the item will "morph" depending on who you put it on in order to generally give them a distinct look.Maria Caliban wrote...
They've already confirmed you can change your companion's outfit.
For instance putting a hat on my inquisitor it would look like one of the ugly mage hats from DAO but if I put it on Viv it will be a horn hat but the horns might curl downwards instead of sticking up etc.
I'm not sure how the system will work in the final game itself, but you could see an example of different companion armor in the PAX demo.
If you take a look at some of the early screenshots of Cassadra in Gameinformer and DA:I website, you'll see her wearing one type of Seeker armor.
Now, in the gameplay video at PAX (the one where she's talking to Vivienne) Cassadra's armor changed to black full plate with a trenchcoat (same one she's wearing on the image in World of Thedas).
If that's any indication, I believe it'll be possible to give Vivienne different robes, but they'll all be orlesian theamed. Just as Cassadra's armor always feature Seeker colors and heraldry.
Just a suspition I'm going to throw out here: Vivienne may have a slightly different hat that automatically goes with each robe placed on her, and that it may not even be possible to have Vivienne hatless.
They will retain their shape, style and something that identifies them but other than that we have full control over their looks and can go to town customizing their armours to a high degree colors, materials, head, collars, chest, hands, leggings so there will be tons of different Vivienne's but no matter what we put her in there'll be something that identifies her. There were a few rumours or theories that she maybe his daughter or his younger sister but wasn't mentioned by the devs or really hinted at.She does look fantastic. And I like her implied attitude. I'm not sure where I heard it, but I vaguely recall some mention of her being Duncan's daughter. Can anyone tell me if there is anything to this, or is it just complete fantasy?
Anyway she looks great and I think she'll be an interesting character and a companion.
That said, personally I LOVED the DA2 "iconic look" and really would have been happy if they'd stayed with it.
I seriously doubt Vivienne is Duncan's daughter. That's almost certainly totally b.s.
All of the stuff I said is coming right from the devs themselves from the crafting and customization podcast from nerd appropriate, if you want a more detailed version I posted on in this thread.

They also stated that they're looking forward to all of the different companion looks that we come up with via the cosplayers that all look different but have something that makes them, them and recognizable they even talked abou changing the collars on her armour and putting her in non mage armour because it looks awesome on her.

She'll always have long pieces of fabric flowing out from under her armour do to her wearing a trench coat like shell under it.
Varic wearing armour, they said he's very flamboyant and we will never see him in rags and that he has his own style but that's only a part of it.
Also yes you're right there's still a lot they can't tell us but all that is confirmed, Vivienne has her own style and she will incorporate that into what she wears and have something that identifies her no matter what but there are tons of variations and our only limit is what we come up with and probably materials or something.
I agree with you, but there was indeed some theories out there that she was his daughter though that'sh ighly unlikely, also there's a very very slim chance she maybe related to him but not sure how likely it is.
