. .  seems very appropriate as a baptismal thread:

Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC (This varied, depending on whether you looked at EA's site or Bioware's, but both contained video card errors)

Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista

Processor:
2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD

Memory:
1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)
2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)

Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series(6800GT or better)

ATI X1800 XL series or higher

Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers – 5.1 sound card recommended

See the minimum Radeon for ME2, which makes far better sense than the foolishness named for Radeon minimum in ME1 (and omitted above).

AFAIK, it's still the same Unreal Engine, so no real surprises there. I did double up and add ME1 PC's old, erroneous (video card errors) requirements, with the bad part omitted.

EDITED:  I was looking at the ME2 game's list of "below requirements" video cards, at least the Radeons -- and after that, I looked at this comparison:

www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

The X1600 Pro (and the Geforce 6600s, both of those) was pretty weak as a Mainline medium card went back then, so it certainly appears that the HD 4350 has already caught up to it.

For the time being, and for who knows if it will stay this way, they are mixing ME1 and ME 2 in two of the forums, this one and the General Subjects discussion forum, so I've covered both games' requirements in the same message.  .

My biggest question is, and I actually had this answered by dev for Dragon Age prior to its release, is: if I JUST meet the recommended specs, will I be able to play ME2 on its highest settings?

The recommended specs pretty accurately depict my computer. Although I've got 4 gigs of RAM and not 2. I want to know if I'll be able to max out the settings and still get a decent framerate.

Yes. My video card is just below the recommended requirements and I've been assured that I can run it on max on my native resolution. The game actually runs better than Mass Effect 1, even if the reqs are higher and the graphics are better.

One of the advantages of console ports is that they typically have very forgiving system requirements (assuming the game has been properly optimised for the PC, and I expect nothing less from BioWare).

I really enjoyed playing mass effect 1 but I'm not sure my 3 years old laptop can handle mass effect 2. It's running with some lags dragon age at low quality, does someone now if that means that ME2 will work on it?

This what I don't get. I got all the specs and all to play ME2 but, when I got the ME1 along with my XFX Radeon HD 4350 1GB graphics card. So, now after playing ME1 and Dragon Age I have one question from this PC Hardware Tech.

Why is Radeon HD 4350 below system requirements? Just want the honest to god reason why I blew the 60 bucks on a video card that can't run the game.

Eye candy isn't a biggy for me like most modern gamers nowadays (NetHack on the old commadore 64 anyone? *goes back casting magic missiles in the process*) but like all Bioware games going back to 98 with BG1, it's worth playing just for the storyline and simple gameplay.

lanawinst, please post your system specs and we could help you out.

Panzerchicken, the HD 4350 is below minimum because it's an entry level video card (not designed to run games). The game will run on a low resolution at a low framerate but I think it will be playable.

The rule is that if you could run Mass Effect you can run Mass Effect 2 as well.

Thanks. Don't give a damn about FPS and normally keep my resolution at the normal for this old craptastic CRT moniter and can run ME1 at high details. Will put in the pre-order now. Thanks Fredvdp, been more then helpful.

Sorry,

Here are my system specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7100 @1.80GHz

Vista 32 bits

ram : 2046Mo

video card: Mobility Radeon X2300 HD

Seems too low for me but since I can run DAO i thought there were still some hope^_^

I have already looked up the HD 4350, and side by side with the HD 4350, it is more powerful than the official minimum (that is a quite low end for minimum, and I personally have no confidence that it's adequate, compared to Geforce 6800, even the Vanilla 6800).

This is the pertinent part of my second post to this thread:

Hi guys! Can you tell me, if my GeForce 8600 is under this minimum requirements?
Im just asking, because the size of a number doesnt always say anything about the power of a Graphics-Card...

Thanks! :)

That's almost certainly below the minimum requirements, but if you can live with how it runs DA:O, you can probably live with the way it runs ME/ME2. The only extra requirement for the latter is Shader Model 3.0 and I think that card has it.

Yes, a Geforce 8600 really is a Mainline gaming card ("n600").

My current specs

AMD Athlon Dual core 5600+ (2.9 GHZ)
2 GB Ram
Geforce 6700

A few days ago my old 8600GT card died on me. Luckily I had an old 6700 card lying around for a replacement.
A friend offered me a new 8600GT card for free, however that one will not arrive for another three weeks.

So my question is if the old 6700 will run ME2 or should I wait for my new 8600GT?

The closest two things to what you asked about are either an FX 5700, or a Geforce 6600. There never was any "6700". The 6600 is too slow, and the 5700 is too old. If your typo was for the Geforce 7600, one of those is fine, and the other was slightly slow. The 7600 GS was the (somewhat) too-slow one, and the 7600 GT is the better of the two 7600s.

Thank you. It turns out it's an 7600. So I guess I'll have to wait a while.

Will the 8600 GT run ME2 on max settings?

EDIT: off-topic, but wasn't there a 6700 XL card?

In order to run high settings, you need a high end card.  When it was brand new, the 8600 GT was pretty much at the first 1/3 mark in the Medium range (where the Mainline Gaming cards are).  ME2 has the 8800 GT as its Recommended Level video card; that's most likely what you have in mind instead.

The 7600 GT is capable of running at low to medium settings to get you started, then you can move up to Medium Settings.  All such estimates are based on a Medium screen resolution of either 1280 by 1024, or the equivalent in pixel count in a wide screen layout.  Th 7600 GS, if used at a resolution such as 1024 by 768 (considered to be "Low" resolution), and using the Low graphics detail settings, will also get you by, but the 7600 GT would have been better.

"XL" is (or was, as they don't use it now) the Radeon video card in between a "Pro" and an "XT", such as an X1800 XL.  Among its 6n00 cards, nVIDIA skipped from 6600 to 6800.  There were two 6600s, both pretty slow, even when brand new.  The Vanilla 6600 was really VERY slow, and the 6600 GT was barely into the Medium, Mainline range when new.  The Vanilla 6800 was better than a 6600 GT, whereas the awful 6800 XT was worse than a 6600 GT, actually (same card as the 6800 LE with a different suffix, was all).

Next up from the Vanilla 6800 was the 6800 GS, followed by the 6800 GT, and topped off by the 6800 Ultra.

I was not talking about an 8800 Gt but an 8600GT. Will that atleast run the game at medium settings with a resolution of 1280 * 1024, or would it be better to buy a new card?

And Wikipedia does list an 6700XL. It seems to be part of the 6600 series. (http://en.wikipedia....0_chipset_table)
