Did you prefer the more manga-like combat animations in Dragon Age 2?

Hopefully the gameplay is tactical like DAO, because DA2 just felt like button-mash hack n' slack

You didn't have to play it that way. You could play tactical if you wanted. Sure, it meant pausing every two seconds, but it was possible.

And I found it enjoyable.

I much prefer Origins style combat to DA2. If I want over the top combat I will play Dynasty Warriors or Exalted. If there is a story I want the game mechanics to be more of a simulation of the in world rules of physics and anatomy. I also feel that DA2 had a lot of the inverse ninja rule. Killing lots of opponent is only rewarding if they are a challenge. It is better to extend combat by increasing the combat difficulty of individual opponents than increasing the number of opponents in waves. This can mean slowing down the base combat speed and increasing the range of abilities available to opponents. If players keep reusing the same combos have opponents learn to dodge, block, or counter attack.

What makes you think I wasn't playing that way

The gameplay still felt like button mashing over tactics

I'm going to guess it's more responsive as well.

I don't even know what that would mean.  I used to think I did, but then DA2 was sold as being more responsive, and then I found it signficantly less so.

So I'm not sure what this so-called responsiveness is with regard to DA combat.

I found that it depended a lot on what character you're controlling. In my first playthrough I played a mage and almost entirely relied on tactics for companions, and my playstyle was very slow and deliberate (felt necessary on nightmare, though powergamers have other opinions). But when I switched to Fenris and let my PC run on tactics, suddenly combat was a lot more fast-paced. I dunno about "button mashy," but yeah. Being able to instantaneously get in melee range and make quick work of large groups of enemies with little concern for friendly fire (compared to mage) was much simpler.

Funny enough, I found it more enjoyable playing as Fenris. People (some of them) said mage combat was made more engaging or active this time, but to me, it was mostly window dressing. Warrior and rogue got actual gameplay overhauls. I don't necessarily object to classes having a different "feel," but I'm not sure the feel for warrior in DA2 was necessarily the most appropriate feel for the series... and I think combat may have been designed around that style primarily, with the unintended consequence of making the deliberate tactical approach more tedious, if still an available option.

I hope you can at least still beat people to death with your staff if you're a mage. If qunari became playable that's what I'd want him to do.

I liked them more than Origins. Simply put, the animations in Origins felt very clunky and slow to the point it felt at times I was watching the battle unfold in slow motion.

I would prefer a middle ground between the flashy and exciting animations of DA2 and the more realistic animations of Origins.

If DA2 had had a slow motion option, I would have turned it on for all combat.

I welcomed the faster paced animations, but they took it too far. It looked silly.

A good example? Dark Souls.
