New companion. Its looks very familiar to this grey warden guy.

Also interessing is this archer before. I think the archer is female and can maybe Leliana.

I do think it's difficult to judge from just that brief glimpse because we aren't really seeing encounters, but brief snippets of some moves and one-on-one fights. So I'll head off the inevitable cries of DA being an ARPG and say that, in my opinion, encounter design will affect a LOT of this.
The combat actually looks a little bit like Dragon's Dogma to me. Like, a lot.
Edit: And as a mage player, I am LOVING the new look of the magic.

Oh, it's up.
Hah! Who wasn't expecting a new video today? What nowwwwwwwww? (just kidding, we all win)
That does look like dodging. I thought maybe people wouldn't flip out about it due to the fact that there is a talent method of doing it with the harpoon. But of course this will be a huge problem forever now.
Obviously it's all very pre-alpha, but he's got the battle constipation going on worse than the Warden did.
Stiksma guy is cool, I remember seeing him post here.
It's TWITCH, of course I'm going to say it's a problem.
If you control your character in real time while the rest are responding to AI cues, I think it would be great, and might even give me a reason to buy this game. But yeah, they've pretty much lifted Dark Souls timing and melee animations there...

Inquisitor seems to be the one with the hood. So, maybe fulltime companion or only for this part of game.
On video:
Pre-alpha of course, but I like the direction they are taking combat. Way more dynamic in animations and responsive than Origins, still not too fast and "actiony" like DA II was. Especially the twohanded sword looks good, not too slow and not too fast, the moves convey that this weapon has some weight.
One move looks like an active dodge, what would be awesome. Curious to see a real encounter and how party interaction (my party and the enemies) is going to look like.

"Varric and Cassandra have reached level 2". If anyone was still skeptical about their status as companions, that should do it.
The combat in general looks like it's on a good foundation. My favorite was Vivenne casting fire. In Origins mage was my least favorite class to play because I found both the auto-attacks and spells very boring visually and gameplay wise, despite how powerful they were. In contrast mage(especially force mage) was my favorite class in 2 because the mage's attacks and spells actually made them seem engaged and had much better visual effects. Based on that video, I'm quite glad they're apparently sticking closer to DA2 for mage presentation.

Hopefully we'll hear more on the party AI tactics soon.

1) On the tactical view: The intro to the video states "BioWare wouldn't confirm the return of the tactical view..." We don't know if it's coming back yet, all we know is BW won't say one way or another. Yes, I desperately want it too.
2) Combat speed: This is pre-alpha gameplay. The enemies in some of the video didn't even have art. In the video BW even discusses how they are working on receiving feedback and optimizing speed and other combat elements. Please don't all start flipping out about this.
3) Tactics: We saw one dev essentially testing combat against a type of foe, and one single scene of team-based combat that included something like 2 enemies standing on a bridge (OK, and something else on a bridge, too, very briefly). We didn't even see them pause combat, I don't think. However, they spent a lot of time TELLING us that they intent to make combat tactical and bring back a lot of the tactical combat focus of DAO. So I have zero reason to believe this is a twitch game, and unless further evidence for that idea surfaces, please don't assume it will be one.
In the meantime, I have to say this looks awesome. My single favorite enemy in DA2 was the Genlock Alpha with shield, because they were a holistic design. They charged blindly, because they were carrying a big honking shield. They were very hard to hit from the front, because they carried a big shield. They hid behind their big shields. So adding more of that - shields, abilities, etc. affecting how you attack/approach an enemy - makes me very happy. I mean, not using metal on an electrically charged foe! How awesome is that?

Not sure how clear they'll make the levels of armour if they're implementing the thing about poison being ineffectual against heavily armoured units. Will it be scaling damage from mage to heavily armoured or just immunity for heavily armoured units?
Hopefully they'll have more resistances that make sense in the context of the game though, so you have to mix it up a bit. Considering what was said it seems likely.

Nevermind. I'm watching the video on my phone so its hard to see the smaller details. I guess it was a bunch of torches dropped on the ground?
Also, was that the older warden gentleman in that scene? I thought at first that it was Varric, but then I saw the beard.

Having to use wooden swords or stone hammers or the like on certain enemies would be pretty neat.wrigleyviller wrote...

I have no problem running around in third person but once combat starts, please let me pull back and use a more tactical camera angle to control my party.

given that they've apparently put a lot of emphasis on "timing", I wonder how they will integrate the pause and play approach?
This is an important question.
