Not a fan of active dodging I'll say that now, it encourages the player to control the tank as much as possible, pausing the game to issue orders to companions and then switching back before unpausing when what I really enjoy in party-based games is jumping from character to character as the situation requires. Also, when you're good at it it makes some fights laughably easy (DA2 high dragon and spirit golem).

That said, common enemies with their own mini-tactics is great. Most common enemies in the previous games were made for one of two tactics: hit until dead, or stun-lock and hit until dead. When it showed even just those two enemies together at the end I could see how fights could become quite complicated. I do worry that that will necessitate an evenly balanced party, having to take one of each class because certain enemies can only be countered by certain classes - I like to choose personalities for my party rather than classes - but we'll see.

Also, it might be too early to say this given its character model but notice the rogue doesn't teleport? Around 1:35, it goes into stealth and you see the shadow moving to position, which is a fantastic improvement if you ask me.

As for the update itself, that's exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see! It was informative, unlike most of the previous updates; I actually came away knowing more than I did at the start. And some actual game footage, even in its current state, was a nice treat. More of that, please!

Pre-alpha. Okay. Still....every bit of combat shown reminded me of this:

I'm not seeing the tactical, party-based combat. Until I see that, DA:I looks like a button-mashing rehash of DA2 with prettier graphics.

One of the things that i really did not like in Dragon age 2 was the combat camera, the inability to look freely on the battle field and the guess work that I needed to do when placing spells, I just saw the same situation when Viviene used a spell on the top of the stairs, hope that restriction ain't in the final Game.

on the bright side, really liked the "eletricity running through the metallic chain" and the poison resistance from heavy armor.

Did we see new/not yet fully confirmed companions in that vid?

The fight with the shield guy and the roll the PC made to dodge him - it's like straight from the Witcher 2. Hmm... that's actually pretty cool. It's all obviously alpha footage and I commend them for showing it - some developers wouldn't do that.

The camera looked pretty horrible, though I know it's probably way too early to get excited by that. And maybe that's a console version thing?

I hope that they at a later stage test things in a less open environment - I want to see terrain playing a bigger role, not the featureless square box fight venues we saw a lot of in DA2.

I didn't really like the running behind the other guys shield mechanic. Though when you're doing actual multiple characters I guess you're more likely to just get one of your other guys to flank him, which is a more acceptably tactical solution.

Namechecking XCOM is exactly what I want to hear. I've spent silly amounts of the last year working out how to translate XCOM to real time melee focused gameplay.

Episodes with ruined castle - there is a writing "Adamant. Pursue Knight - Commander X" at right top of the screen. Could anyone read the name there?

Technically I don't believe enemy rogues ever teleported. They stealthed and moved into position similarly, but you couldn't see the shadow. Teleporting was a PC rogue/enemy mage feature.

WoW,that was great!Keep up the good work Bioware!

Oh and by the way.I noticed how you made the guy with the shield and how you have to use other abilities to make him open to attacks, something like the witcher 2 with aard.I like it!

Great update. Really liked what I saw. Vivienne has a lovely shape and magic seems to work very fluid and good-looking. Probably going to roll with a mage first, so this is great news.

I know it is still pre-alpha and it might already be in the game, but I would like a bit more vegatation and all that ;)

(Off-topic: the guy was really cute)

Yeah, this. I think this is very important.

Looks like Dark Souls or Witcher 2 mixed with some of the positional requirements like you had with Genlock Alphas in Legacy.

DS and W2 are games in which you control one character.  So you can have the active dodging and timing in those games.  I wonder how you make that kind of gameplay work with a party-based game as it might be too much micro.  For example, what if Varric and Cassandra are fighting two different enemies and both need to respond to an opening at the same time.  Will pause and play make that possible?

I suppose it could be cool if it's executed well and feels right, but I have trepidations as I've never seen a party-based game with that kind of combat work.  And it seems counterintuitive that you'd have that granular a control scheme (dodging, counterattacking with narrow windows of opportunity) in a game where you control four people.

Certainly I'd like to see it work as it could be cool and look forward to seeing more in hopes it can speak to those sorts of concerns.

Yeah, this. I think this is very important.

I'm also worried that the shields will be the green rectangles from the video.

The Backstab ability was very cleary a teleport.

They did talk about Frostbite 3 allowing them to have destructible terrain at one point, which suggests they're thinking about terrain I guess.

It looks like hack & slash combat. It can be fun if done properly, but that's not really what I want from Dragon Age.

Do we know if that was a combat roll? It could have been like the Evade talent in DA2.

Anyway, I'm really liking everything that I've seen.

Awesome, good stuff. The character with the big sword that was used as an example had what appeared to be grey warden gear, and fighting inquisition soldiers. Anyway the combat looks great.

The camera angle they where using reminded me a little of mass effect 3 in the sense that the characters looked bigger than in previous games. It will definitely show the characters in more detail. Also I hope those big shield guys charge like they did in legacy. It will be (hopefully) easy to combat roll and strike from behind.

Exciting.

That looks more like a mix between Dark Souls/Dragon's Dogma. Not sure what "middle ground" between Origins and 2 is supposed to be there.

Or I understood that sentence too literally.

The other character ( the scribe girl ? ) isn't confirmed though.

She's still technically a character. She's been in concept art too (the one where inquisitor stabs the table)

I have been trying to find the concept art you mentioned (the one where the inqusitor stabs the table and displays the scribe) but can't seem to find it. Could you provide a link of it if possible? The only picture i remembering seeing of the scribe so far is the survey picture. Unless that is what you were talking about.

2:49 I think. 3:00 as well. Looks like it's fortress from E3 trailer?

Vid is glitching like hell for me - Why can Gi upload it to Youtube or something?
