I'd like to know wtf is this "harpoon" device they described? It seems like a sci-fi or super hero ability and not medieval fantasy tech at all.
Not played Mortal Kombat I guess?
Get over here!
Wouldn´t call it tech, it´s just a harpoon at the end of a chain... wonder if some enemies could grab it and pull the warrior towards them.

If that happened, Hawke would have to become First Warden, just to mess with her little brother.

Seems more action oriented than DA2. And if the camera is fixed, please let us adjust the fov.Reznore57 wrote...
the mage combat looks pretty good , the warrior meh.
I thought it really lacks fluidity , both characters seemed very stiff when they were moving ..looks quite bad.
That's because it's an alpha, not the final build of the game.
Hell, it's pre-Alpha! The video showed maybe 20 combined seconds of in-game, pre-Alpha video, and some people already are freaking out about stuff. How can you complain about the game's focus on tactics when we don't even see character switching or pause-and-play? One dev shows some basic combat abilities against one enemy in one flat open field for demonstration purposes and people are already demanding more varied combat environments and whining about kiting.* I mean, maybe this game will have an unfortunate focus on real time action to the detriment of team-based tactical combat. Or maybe not! There's no way to know.
I hope everyone is able to cool their jets and wait until we know more. For the time being, I just know DAI looks good, I love the varying enemy abilities, and the devs spent the entire video assuring us that they will reincorporate tactics and strategy into combat.
*I will admit the video of a mage kiting the Arishok to the tune of Wacky Sax is pretty funny. That was how my mage beat him, too. But everyone realizes the combat depicted here against the enemy with a shield was strictly a demonstration, right? That the dev was running around him to display a tactic - namely, being able to outflank an enemy, not run away from one.

Haven't played The Witcher series but from the videos i've seen from it's combat system they seem fairly similar. Which is a shame since the more action-based combat system in that series is why i've given it a pass. I know it is still the alpha build but that kind of system with locking on and strafing (or is my eyesight that poor?) is not something i would get a lot of enjoyment out of.
Party based and action combat don´t mix well. Having to control every move means the rest of the party will be out of focus of your attention. I want to control a party, not one guy and AI sidekicks.

I really liked the the combat it looks great, in my opinion, I think the two-handed guy was being slow because he got flasked or something? The black smoke like stuff he was kicking up seemed like what was the deal there.
No, it´s the same mistake from Origins, the swing itself is OK but there´s some dead time between each blow, and it feels like the enemy could stab them then. I´d advise the team to look at Gothic 1&2 2H style when you mastered it, as you saw the "Nobody cares about his name" hero compensate and even use the inertia of the swings when chaining blows. Looked badass.

Mass Effect 2 did it fine.

Mass Effect 2 did it fine.
ME 1-3 were TPS with one PC and two supporting AIs, not a full controlled party.
And ME3 did it better, had the best gameplay imho.

Not really, it basically made it single character with a couple of guys who are sources of powers and occasionally inconveniently die.

If I ever relinquish control over my DA PC for one of his/her companions, its because my PC is down and I have no other choice.

Agreed. And also where if Shephard died, it was insta-game over.

I find that when I play DA, I play it kinda like Mass Effect in that I maintain control over my character as much as possible, but frequently pause to order squadmates/companions to do certain actions.

That's fair enough that you play that way, but the DA series accommodated that playstyle amongst others. A more action-bent gameplay ONLY accommodates the one playstyle. That's not good for many people.

The best thing the team could do is set up combat so that many different play styles are possible/available.
I feel DAO had that a lot better than DA2 did.

I'm not sure about that. It risks turning combat into a wishy-washy kludge. Actually I kind of think that's what happned to DA2.
Of course, I'm a selfish bastard so what I really mean by this is "They should focus on the tactical party stuff I like"
