Hoooboy, we can play as elves and dwarves after all? All the feels! I thought it was confirmed we couldn't! I'm liking Varric and Cassandra for the party, and this Vivenne, good to see at least one brand new person.
It was confirmed. But as they said in one of the videos, getting that extra year of development allowed them to put in the other races after all.
In "World of Thedas" page 87 there is an image of this enemy. He is in the section pertaining to Tevinter and you can see that he is wearing a sigil that represents Tevinter. I'm having trouble googling that image to post but I assume this means Tevinter will be an enemy.
We already the presence of Tevinter enemies suggested by this pic
You bash their shield with your shield to get it out of the way.
Look around 5:50.
Shield and Shield fighting was more about getting angles and leverage on your opponent. Side steps, controlled movements, and edge on flat techniques.
Throwing a grappling hook at them in combat would be beyond stupid. First if to was a metal shield it wouldn't work as you have nothing to really hook into because it would most likely bounce off the shield. Second think about the amount of strength required to rip off a shield bound around the forearm.
If you were going to use something on a long chain, you might as well just try and hit their head to disorient them or deal some real damage it its bludegeoning and they are wearing a helmet..
Very insightful video.
I was thinking of something more like a roman pilum as a disarming weapon, because it throws the shield off balance and creates a hindrance in the interior of the shield for the wielder. I have to say though, I think a grappling implement, if it's designed well, wouldn't be so bad against a rectangular metal tower shield planted in the ground, like we see them doing in the pre-alpha video, not that it's the best shield design, more like a portable wall. The ground gives you leverage to pull the shield down forward, and the wielder off balance. I would rather something like that, if we do end up with the moving wall type enemies, be part of a single move or go directly into an offensive kill. My preference is for more realistic shield fighting, but I think it makes enough sense in the context of the game. Nobody says the same tool can't be both things, a short thrown spear tip, and a barbed grappling instrument. That's basically what a harpoon is, so it's not poorly named.
Throwing a chain would not give only the target an opportunity to overwhelm the thrower but it could also give other surrounding enemies an opening as well. While the thrower is preoccupied with the chain, it would leave them vulnerable to attack. I have to admit, it would make for interesting battle tactics. Having one designated chain thrower and all that.
This might sound like a random question but, is there any way I could get the Game Informer cover as a poster? It looks really cool and I want one without the writing on it.... http://gamingbolt.co...aifullcover.jpg

He's a fog warrior
He's not. Like Reznore said, his cloth has two serpents on them and, should you check the "Major Powers" sections in the first pages, you'll see that represents Tevinter. Also, the huge keyhole keeping the helmet in place doesn't strike me as something one would wear if given a choice. Plus, the text nest to it read "Tevinter Slavery caused native Seherons to embrance the Qun over Imperil rule". I believe he was placed there as an example of Tevinter cruelty.

It kinda made sense for Fenris to know how to speak qun then. But I guess we'll just see when the game comes out.
@Ukki I don't think it's likely to get stepped on, because the immediate second motion is to pull back on the chain at a slight angle so that it whips directly back to the user's side, above or below the arm axis. You do this before the pointy end finds its mark, so it doesn't have an oppurtunity to stay in space or drop. It most likely would never get near the ground (unintentionally). Of course, then the chain wielder should be doing something more than trying to just catch it. They should be using the momentum of the chain and projectile to 'chain' the momentum into a continuing attack. If you want to bring the chain in, you use a slight waving motion as it waves by to wrap the chain around the hand and arm, or around the body depending, so you're not actually trying to grab it out of the air any more than the target. I used to practice chain fighting once upon a time, couple of shorter chains with nails on the end. Same principle. The trick is to constantly stay in motion, actively using momentum. I think you're about as likely to grab or stomp on a well used chain as you are to grab a snake midstrike. Of course, that's assuming it's a narrow, flexible chain.

I would absolutely love to see rope or chain fighting as it's own weapon style, actually, a lot more than the harpoon. There are actual martial arts disciplines that are all about this particular kind of weapon. I'd think of it as a medium range rogue weapon. I know that a lot of people might not think of eastern martial arts influence as something they want after the over the top DA2 aspects, or they might think 'oh no, God of War', but it's really very different. I'd love to see this treated as a full feature regular weapon specializing in short-medium range crowd control or single combat at range, rather than as anti-armor, which it's certainly not. A character using these weapons would have a number of grappling, stunning, and disarming moves at close range against any regular enemy, though. And I'd even like to have the dice roll chance that the enemy does occasionally wrap or grab the chain and pull the character in, which would only open up the close range counter move set.
Here's Jackie Chan for kind of the action movie treatment of the rope dart, using a horseshoe :
NOTE: These following are very long, full instructional videos for basic forms.
Here's a Shaolin rope dart instructional video that gets to the kind of strike I'm talking about. A slowed down release at about 15:50 and after, a foot strike just before.
Man, this is a great way to end my holiday.
I come back and Elves are playable again! (and they look fantastic )
Plus more exploration, more dynamic environments and better combat tactics...
I am a big fan of the series, but i saw the combat-video, and i saw a guy running around of an enemy alone with an xbox pad, and playind Draksiders.
Now what is this?
Didn't he supposed to send in the tank to front of an enemy, and nuke him in the a.ss with a mage, or archer from far above view?
I cant understand why they saying it will have a PC optimized control...
Well its not dragon age at all at this point, it is some console hack and slash.
Ill be patient, it is surely a mistake, or this video wasnt on purpose.

Kicking in DA:I? That's too actiony. Pre-order CANCELLED!
I'm actually surprised how much hate the gameplay video is getting on youtube. Half of the people in there are complaining how it looks too action oriented and it should be more like the combat in Origins. So, are they saying they would rather have incredibly snail paced combat from Origins, rather then this one? *Cannot compute*

Well, the first problem was that you were reading YouTube comments. YouTube comments sections tend to be pretty vile or somehow turn towards a religious arguement.

I'm actually not surprised at all. I've learned that many people like to complain / hate just about everything. And their demands are limitless.
Anyway, personally I think this new combat look nice. Seems like they did follow what they said, making a mix of DA:O and DA 2's combat system, plus adding some new features (I like the chain hook thing. Pesky archer / mages are always a pain to deal with when I played melee characters). I wish they could've showed us more of party tactic combat though. But they still have about a year to go anyway. More info will eventually come.
The comments here haven't exactly been any different. DA:O being held as the second coming of jesus and DA II the spawn of satan as far as "tactical" combat goes, doesn't much hold credibility to be honest.
