Not manly? What? Check this out and see if you can say that again. Maybe it's just my avatar talking, but that guy's pretty hot.

Not manly has nothing to do with women thinking you are hot.  Which always raises the question why care if you are manly or not?

Well if you want to go in that direction, manliness has to do with behavior/psychology anyway, and appearance is irrelevant except for first impressions. On-topic, I stand by my 'eternal youth' statement. =p
On a related note, why hasn't anyone mentioned the lack of facial hair on many Welsh men?

Oh and by the way, some people find masculinity and femininity hot and that's okay. You might think manliness and hotness are unrelated, but many people would disagree. It's subjective though, and there isn't any 'right' answer to that. Watevah. ~__~

Actually, you are wrong in this. Taino Indians had no facial hair... at all! I'm from PR, and one of the things you would now is that Puerto Ricans are a mix of taino, African, and Spanish ethnic background. Tainos in PR (keyword IN PR) were all but wipe out by the Spanish, to the point that, having too little Indian slaves, they began to bring African slaves to PR, and in the years that follow, the few tainos that were left in PR breed with the African slaves. Other tainos dies from diseases and the likes, but after a while there were no pure tainos in PR. Hence, why people in PR now have facial hair, a trait that is prominent in Europeans (Spanish, Dutch, etc), not from Tainos.

Ignoring all posts except the original, the real reason that most Elves in most fantasy worlds have no facial hair is because they were originally conceived as being eternally youthful. That has changed in stories over the years, but that concept of eternal youth is still in the back of most writer's heads, and even if they desired to make a statement and put a beard on their Elven character, some crazy Elf-lovers would object so they play it safe and have them smooth-skinned.
For instance, can you imagine Elrond with a Gandalf beard? Or Legolas with an Eomer beard? I know Dragon Age is in a different universe, so hypothetically, they can change any stereotype they want and get away with it, but it's reached a point where putting a beard on an Elf would basically be saying, "We don't have real Elves in this universe." It'd be like having Dwarves that dislike alcohol, or Humans as a whole race that were peace-loving. It's not that such things couldn't or shouldn't ever happen in fantasy tales moving forward, but I don't think those stereotypes will be broken any time soon.

You are incorrect in this actually. Cirdan (a very... VERY... VERYY old elf in LOTR and Silmarillion) had a beard like Gandalf. So yeah I can imagine and elf with a beard like Gandalf.

"Círdan appeared very old save for his eyes, with a consistent long silver beard. The eldest known Elf to remain on Middle-earth, he reached the "third cycle" of his life and grew a beard. His apparent ageing may come from the many pains and troubles he has seen on Middle-earth."

Yeah, well that makes TOTAL sense.

Dare I ask, where in the lore is this stated or alluded to? :pinched:

Do you really want to know?

For the most part, I know that elves didn't have hair in Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons.

Actually not just african slaves my friend, the spaniard had their fun too, which is why I exist else I wouldnt really call myself Puerto Rican. And yes tainos had beards too. Its stereotypical to state that a race didnt have facial hair. Its not even a genetic thing. it just depends on which area you were brought up in. In PR I didnt have a lick of hair on my face. As soon as I moved here it began to grow. basicaly you live in a hot climate your body adapts and your hair stops growing. You change to a cold climate and you have to shave every other week.

Actually you just contradicted your argument. My best friend (from PR) also, is currently working on his doctoral and making a study in the different gene pools in PR. The genes for hair growth were introduced by Europeans (and as you said, Spaniars had fun, but so did the Dutch, as some studies have found). Like you said, you were in PR and little hair grew, you move to a clod climate, and based on that, hair began to grow. This is because you already have the genes for it. Like evolution, is driven by enviormental factors and natural selection. You take Taino and put him in the cold in.. lets say.. Scandinavia... he will freeze to death, because his body has not evolved in that enviorment. Do the same with a Viking, place it in PR... he will complain about the heat, while eveyones is happy and naked (well almost). It is not a stereotype in this case (it is when refering to Native Americans, but they actually could grow facial hair, because over time, they were exposed to cold enviorments). Tainos got a mess up deal, were all but whipe out, and now... I got to shave everyweek... thanks Spaniard Conquistadores :(

*Just notice something... even if you give them proper clothing. the Taino would have a hard time with the cold. Its hard to explain, but i think people will get what im trying to say hehehe :)

So? That's an exception, a very very rare one, so it does not contradict the point and even further proves it. I agree with Cuuniyevo. In some myths and legends elves were first depicted as eternal children - so definitely no facial hair.

Actually, doesn't Zevran has some kind of beard..

Why don't Elves get any Facial hair option? Do they not get facial hair or something? I know it's a small matter but i'm very picky. Sorry :/

Unholy crap. You're right. I never really thought of it before but none of the elves have facial hair either. A lot like Lord of the Rings.

My post what about people thinking that in Lord of the Rings there are no elves with beards. And technicaly is not a rare one, since there are elfs that are older than Cirdan in the lore, but he is the oldest in middle earth, not counting the really really old ones in Valinor (but of this there is nothing writen... so they may or may not have facial hair). So yes people. elves in Lord of the Rings online can have facial hair, its more of a sign of "I've been around this place far too long" more than anything :P

Seriously, in all this time has no one realized that you can make male dwarves WITHOUT facial hair?  That's just as much if not more blasphemous than elves having facial hair.  In some fantasy settings, even female dwarves grow facial hair.  It will always look weird to me to see a male dwarf without a beard.

I don't think it detracts too much from the game to have elves with the traditional no body hair rule.  This game is progressive enough in other regards, like how you can have dwarf/human romances.  I've not played any game where that is possible except this one.  I suppose my point is that the developers needed to maintain the classic feel to some degree.

You know that was one of the things that got my interested in this game (not the slave part), but breaking from the stereotype. Before it was like all elves are from the forest, beautiful, immortal, smart.. etc... Not in this game. They have to work for it now! You elves had it all pretty, then we human came and... /slap, now make me a grill cheese. Anyways, I can talk... I like Dalish elves more than city lol. I'm a man... i fear change
