I just see it as someone who likes to play games. Whether you play Barbie:Jet, Set, and Style, or Gears of War as somewhat of a 'hobby', I guess you're a gamer. Time wasters might work just as well.

Just out of curiosity... what exactly defines someone as being a "gamer"?

Being male, apparently. Image IPBImage IPB

No, I didn't mean it like that. I'm just curious as to how they can survey something like this?

Why is this worth reporting on?

Because it advances slaves.

we have Wolf, who is female in charge of Halo 4 since its announcement for release a year ago... she and her team made Halo 4. not by male counterparts but purely by female gamers themselves.

And that's why Halo went to hell.

It's all about dat social justice with her. Definitely would hit her though. That's what you're talking about right? Hitting her with a nude model cardoard version of Lara Croft?

nah as in giving her my analog controller for a few playthrough's. After that we will watch reruns of ed edd n eddy and discuss why naz is sexualized in an urban version. Then after that we can discuss how the wire is sexist because it is a predominantly male cast. Why can't Omar little be Omari little? Damn men.

My sister plays games, maybe even considers herself a gamer. Yet my gaming hours over the last 10years is a thousandfold larger then hers.

Why should this matter?  Is there some kind of arbitrary hours per week line after which you can be called a "real" gamer?

It matters because it misrepresents the gaming landscape. Please note, I am all for more girl gamers (I wish there were more, and wish they actually played). But girls are not the ones who are actually playing the games. Males are, and by a very large majority.

Yo dawg I heard you like to generalize so...I actually don't have anything for this.

Listen, I am all for equality, and I am 100% for girls playing games. My comments are not from a male-vs-female standpoint. There have been other studies and articles all claiming similar statistics. But a girl playing COD MP once does not equate to a male playing 100+ hours. Yet these "statistics" will have us believe its equal. The reality is, the males are playing, not the girls.

These types of studies are manipulative. Designed to sell more copies of games under a false pretext that girls are the norm. When in reality, girls will playing in a male dominated gaming landscape.

But... perhaps my time in multiplayer games is skewing my own perspective...

^ Maybe? We don't all play multiplayer games, and I can say that personally, I've only played CoD once. I got swarmed by every other player, repeatedly getting killed as soon as I spawned, and didn't stand a chance. That was enough for me to say 'meh', and sell the game. I did play ME3 mp for a while, with friends, but I'm more apt to play sp or co-op than mp these days.

I play daily, and I'm female. Maybe I don't fit into the statistics we're discussing here, but I do count. Or at least I should. And I know lots of other female gamers that play similarly to how I do.

I'd be happy to compare my Skyrim and Dragon's Dogma stats with you; that's more up my alley. ;)

Women have more sense that to dump dump 100+ hours into Call of Duty every year? I do agree with DcI that these studies don't really tell us anything.

It's great that you want to see more female gamers. But with respect, I'm bothered by your expressing worry about the idea of games being made and sold under a "false pretext that girls are the norm."

I don't expect every game to be perfect when it comes to inclusion, but I do want to see a variety of games in general in which female characters and players are treated as normal, and not as an afterthought.

When you say that you wish there were more female gamers who "actually played," I'm assuming that you mean you would like to have more female friends to play games with - and as I said, that's great!

But I would ask you to keep in mind that many female gamers have been made to feel that their credibility as a gamer is determined by how well they satisfy what men want in a female gamer friend (or girlfriend) - and that's an incredibly frustrating thing to experience. I'm not saying that you personally do that - I'm just pointing that out as something for male gamers in general to be aware of, and to avoid.

Finally, and with respect, I find it frustrating when men express not wanting to be "put in the same category" as female gamers because they assume that those female gamers don't spend as many hours playing games as they do, or play the same kinds of games that they do.

While it's a very human reflex to want to control a label that we're attached to, and that we use to identify people who we might have things in common with, I would like to see less gate-keeping when it comes to who's allowed to use the "gamer" label, and more conversations about being a gamer that begin with "What does being a gamer mean to you personally?"

I am a woman and I've played video games since I was a kid. I have played for years on PC but only some on the Xbox. Like the article pointed out for female gamers, I like storylines. If the storyline is good, I will play it for hundreds of hours. If its lack luster or just a shooter, no thanks.

Currently, I play SWTOR, an MMO. I have sunk hundreds of hours into the game. You want my stats? Sure. Look at my Raptr and understand, that's only within the last few months that I started tracking. I've played since launch and I have seven characters to prove it.

Many of the statements I see here are what I hear everyday in SWTOR. Girls don't game. Yet, there I am main tanking the op. Most of the time I do not mention my gender because then I get hit on or put down. They question my calls and my skills. Yet, my toons are better geared and have better builds than most of the guys I pull through hard mode flashpoints or ops.

The fact is, men are not all that welcoming to female gamers. That's their prerogative. It certainly doesn't stop me. I predominately play with my husband and male best friend because I don't want to have to deal with chauvinistic, not to mention misogynistic attitudes from male gamers. Not all male gamers are like that but there are enough to make the experience not worth the effort.

When playing an mp all that matters is that the level/task/quest is completed and do not see what the gender of the player has to do with that?

One would think that the actual 'performance' is what counts...

More and more females are gaming and the numbers are fluctuating in percentages comparing male/ female players.

Cannot comment on experiences I had playing mp because I never played that.

That's enough sexist comments and double standards for one discussion, thank you.

End of line.
