I ALWAYS, and yes, I mean always, prefer an original score to a pre-rendered soundtrack for movies and games. Even in great tone-setting situations like Tarantino always utilizes and the heavy metal in Brutal Legend, I find the work is better off with its own original music tailored specifcally for it.
I do think non-original compositions work on TV shows though. Scrubs and the 4400 in particular come to mind.

John Carpenter composed some neat synthesizer music for some of his older films. Hell, one of my favorite bands called Blood & Roses covered the theme songs from both Escape From New York and Assault On Precinct 13.
