PC is so much harder?

I've played DA:O on console a bunch of times. I'm fine at it on hard difficulty (at least I think I play on hard? Might be normal instead.) But I recently got it for PC and it's so much harder, even on normal difficulty. I can't even get halfway through the origin (city elf rogue). It's getting really frustrating, especially after hearing so much about how combat is so much easier on the PC. No matter what I do, I keep dying facing the guards right after Nelaros dies. And whichever party member I'm controlling, the other party member then freezes and just stands there uselessly, no matter what I tell them to do. If I tell Soris to attack a guard and then switch back to controlling my character, he'll attack them... once, and then just stand there. Am I supposed to switch back and forth between them for every single attack? On the console, I had less control over my party members, but I could always get them to do what I wanted without micromanaging them.

Yeah, yeah, I know I suck. I'm not much of a gamer; I play it for the story. But if I can't get through the origin that's not much of a story, so does anyone have some tips for me?

Console stuff typically has twice the buff stats, like twice as much mana regeneration and so on.
PC OTOH has a wide range of mods, like for instance this experience mod,
that makes you lv up faster.

On PC you can also hack items and money, and here is how

Check your party control mode. There are two buttons right below the character portrait that control what party members do. Try clicking on them and seeing which mode you prefer.

I don't want to just use mods to make it easier; if I wanted it to be that easy I'd just go on easy difficulty. I just want some strategies because clearly I'm doing something wrong here. Managed to make it to Vaughan, and now I keep dying in about 15 seconds...

For me, i find building the avatar being the best part of the game,
if i wanted to run economy, i'd probably be playing monopoly.
There is also mods with a more balanced purchase/sell ratio btw,
IIRC i sold reapers cudgel for 388 gold, and then bought it back for 1400 gold.
I think the exploits commonly used to overcome issues with experience & money
is slower and more tedious than just put a ring on and hack 2000 gold.
But by all means if you find dying every 15 sec without progress is entertainment, carry on.

Money isn't an issue; that's not even what I'm talking about. Anyways, I'm looking to get better at the PC version so that I'm not dying every 15 seconds. And I don't think a balanced purchase/sell ratio is going to help me kill Vaughan, so...

Game is always hardest first time, before you unlocked skills,
and before you unlocked stuff that get imported at beginning,
like battledress of provocateur, reapers cudgel, etc.

Those guides are really helpful, thanks! But they don't really solve the problem I'm having right now. I know how to build my character and stuff like that. It just isn't working out well for me on the PC, for whatever reason. But still, thanks for posting them, because there are good tips in there that I might be able to use later.

Maybe you could detail your build and difficulty level? Then if someone feels like it they can try it and report back? Should be easy to do since it's at the start of the game.

Actually, it sounds like the OP's problem is he told his party to hold position! If you click in the upper left icon under the portraits, you can tell them to un-hold then they will assist. Otherwise, they will indeed just stand there...

The original problem was having my party hold position, yes, though the combat difficulties continued after that was resolved. I re-played the origin yesterday, though, and had no trouble at all. Perhaps it's simply a matter of the learning curve.

I think the biggest blunder a newbie can make is to spread their talents on various weapon trees, rather than just picking one and sticking with it. For archery, for example, arrow of slaying and scattershot are fantanstic, but you need minimum 8 talents. You're not getting them anytime soon if you spread across the various trees.

The biggest catch for me is not having DLC items in inventory right from start,
like blood armor, battledress of provocateur, and reapers cudgel.

There is one thing missing even with DLC though:
-a decent mage staff.
Is there any half good mage staff available before Korcari wilds in Ostagar ?

Actually I find it easier since all the custom armor my characters are using buffs up their stats a lot. :3 lol

There is actually an even faster and easier cheat

runscript additem prm000im_grimoire_frozen 99

this will give you 297 free attribute points.

Yeah, all you have to do for that is install the additem mod *and* have the collectors edition. Easy peasy. And then you even get all of the entertainment of one-hitting everything. Even more fun than using high level DLC items in ostagar that makes you invincible.

You can get one at level one (Veridium, I think, requires 24 Magic). Just tell Barkspawn (or whatever you named your Dog) to find something interesting and he will fetch it. Eventually.

Of course, you only get Barkspawn early if you pick the Human Noble origin, and then you can't even give the staff to your mage NPC in the Tower of Ishal because his Magic is too low. By the time you have a mage that you can give the staff to it is only sort of OK, no longer very interesting. Unless you min-XP the game to get Morrigan at low level (and/or Barkspawn, if you're not playing Human Noble) .

I use to play this game on my xbox along time ago. I found it easier on PC. You have better control of your team with the PC which really makes this game much easier. Set-up tactic and use your team to get the most out of combos.

Also keep in mind that friendly fire behaves differently on PC and consoles.

That shouldn't be a problem yet at the start of the game, but later on it might be a really big deal.

The Advanced Tactics mod is also extremely useful for PC players. It helps you a lot, even if you don't use tactics excessively by letting you set rudimentary behaviour for each party member (like ranged, close combat or rogue).

This is what I was thinking. If they hold position, they need to be told what to do.

Don't use tactics, at all. Only set tactics before the final battle (for.. obvious reasons once you get there).
