Self-professed elf lover here <3 (Seriously, my XBL quote is "I love elves.") I read them, watch them, write them, play them, you name it. Favorite fantasy character. I always pick an elf to play when given the option in a video game. (To the point where, when I showed my brother in law my Skyrim character and said, "He's an elven archer," he replied, "Of course he is.")  

I was happy with DA:O elves. I was happy with DA2 elves! Sure, they had too-long necks and often got rendered funny, but that's just bad graphics and lack of time. The design was sound. And I like DAI elves. 

The point is, I like elves. (I even like books that have characters called "the fae" or something similar, who don't have pointy ears but are eerily beautiful or immortal or name-your-elven-trope) And I trust BW's writers. The graphics people in their turn have plenty of time to get it right this time. So I know I'll be satisifed with whatever they ultimately settle on.

And this time I'll get to play as one again!

More like poorly polished visuals, but yes. Every character was affected by it (just look at the hands thread).

I'm glad to see some elf lover in favor of the DA][ design.

It's hard to tell from the released pictures, but I hope they kept the Fenris and Merrill nose. I thought it was quite cute myself.

I got to say, even though the elves looks great, what impresses me the most are the clothes, if they have that plus customization ( color and materials) that would be fun.

I think the real reason they went back is because now that the elves are playable again, they have to make sure that the PC can be attractive because otherwise most people definitely wouldn't want to play the elves with the way they looked in DA2.

Arllekin, the clothes look impresive but I doubt it's a ingame asset. Seems more like a concept made in zbrush.

There is a DA2 thread for that called Who wants to play as an ugly elf? that was created over two years ago.

Thats the joke though. Elves will always be derivative from the Tolkien mold in every game, book, movie, RPG, setting that they are in. 

It doesn't matter how they are designed, the point is including elves in Dragon Age is basically a cop-out and lazy in terms of design of a fantasy world. Its simply not original because not only does everyone do it, but everyone does it because its expected of them. 

Now I am not saying its not interesting, however, since the elves in this world have a richer lore than most fantasy games. But in terms of originality, their inclusion is just standard tropes, which is tiring sometimes. In fact, everything about Dragon Age minus the Chantry and the Qunari are unoriginal in the typical fantasy tropes. 

The Chantry is every morally grey religious power ever hardly original.

The Ounari are grey skinned horned elves/orcs with a rigid society that asigns roles based on birth not original ethier.

I agree with the creator of the post. DA2 character were ugly because dev didn't have time to polish them, it's crystal clear

I do think the Chantry is slightly original...a monotheist religion in fantasy _IS_ somewhat unique.. Same thing with the quanari, there;s no fantasy series I can think of that the Qun matches up to.

Dragon Age 2's elves barely worked even with the games very stylised look. Inquisition seems to be going for a more realistic approach, so continuing to make the elves look alien would probably only result in making them even more off-putting than they were before.

The reason I started the thread in the first place was to show that there were actually people who disagree with the popular opinion that the redesign was a bad idea

To be honest, I think DA 2 elves look like bunch of Avatar wannabe. Pretty ridiculous and over the top. From what I've seen so far, DA:I's elf design is a lot cooler.

I read it that he thought the DAII elves were wrong, just plain wrong.

That was what they intended to do. So for what its worth it was intentional.

TES and WOW disagree with you. so does D&D to an extent with Half-Orcs.
