Keep Elves Weird

The problem is not the elven design. Merril and Fenris looked fine (although Merril could use a little more meat on her bones). All the other elves who aren't important characters were the victims of ****ty graphics. That's it. DA:O had better graphics than DA2. DA2 NPC character models looked like something from PS1 and the older Elder Scrolls game.
The real problem was the darkspawn. Hurlocks looked like ghouls and moving like power ranger puddies. The emissaries even worse. I don't even know how to explain the horrid emissary design outside of the words "retarded buffoonery".

The clothes look nice. Is it Orlesian? Fereldan? or just concept art?
I hope it's not just concept art. These coats look AMAZING!
Hopefully the armors also look nice.

I don't understand. What was wrong with the designs of the Elves in DA2? The designs made them stand out more from humans, more than in DA:O. Damn, there's so much hate over DA2, it's insane.
Really? Do not you understand? What's in the DA2 instead of elves showed skinny freaks, with eyes at the temples? Although the elves at LO R E - sexy and attractive?
That is - in your opinion, attractive?
That is - disgusting!

I hope that the developers will never return to this "beauty"!

Not all elves in DA2 were that bad. I think the elves looked good, definitely not human which was the intention.
I do hope that in Inquisition they still look like a different race, not just smaller humans with pointy ears as has been said.

Elves should not look like humans, because they're not humans. That is all.
EDIT: Also, I'm amazed at how many people express their personal preference as if it were universal fact. I did not personally find the DA2 elves ugly, and that isn't the point anyway. We don't all like the same things, and so it is impossible to try and design universally attractive elves. It would be a waste of time to even try.
Furthermore, Orana was an extreme case, and the bystander elves were a result of bad graphics; not bad character design. Please stop posting pictures of them in an attempt to make the argument that DA2 elves were ugly. They aren't representative of the DA2 elf design as a whole.

Only they still look human. Let's examine them:

Non-human characteristics:
-Bigger eyes
-No nasion for nose. Otherwise looks human.
-Big pointy floppy ears.
Human characteristics:
+Share the same skin color.
+Humanoid facial structure.
+Humanoid body.
+Grow hair at the top of their head.
+Eyes, nose, ears and mouths are all in the same place.
So apart from the few aesthetic differences they are humans just smaller and with more pronounced features such as bigger eyes, no nasion for their nose and stupid ears.
What sets them apart from the elves out of Final Fantasy? They just look uglier (which is what having no nasion does for you) and that's it.

The image below perfectly sums up the elves for DA2 and their "differences" from the Origins' elves.

Bigger eyes, floppy ears and no nasion.
This:
This:

And this:

...are all bad designs. I don't even need to bring Orana into this.
It's no coincidence Bioware made Tallis miss these features:

Where are her large eyes and missing nasion? Clearly Bioware agreed with the fans after the backlash.
In conclusion I find the "elves aren't meant to look like humans" argument a flawed one. If they weren't meant to look like humans then maybe Bioware should have designed a minotaur race or something instead of following the typical fantasy trope for elves (pretty eyes, pointy ears and smaller bodies than humans). Take away their ears and they don't look that different from humans save from their bigger eyes and missing nasions of course:

But they still share human characteristics.
This isn't about DA2 hatred. It's about the elven redesign being horrible and it's as simple as.
But I'll admit. The elves of Dragon Age: Origins weren't exactly amazingly designed either.

Take away the ears there and you've got a human. Elves in Inquisition however have a different facial model and thankfully they're following the Origins design. The result is that it's facial construction looks different from a human but it's not missing the golden ratio.

The face is much thinner from that of a human's as well as looking more delicate. Of course these are simply rendering models. We'll see what the final result looks like soon enough.

Elves are not just short humans. They should not have human facial or skeletal structures.
They are also not Tolkien elves. Although they may share many similarities, it is their differences that make them so interesting. They are Dragon Age elves, and they deserve a unique appearance to go along with their unique culture.
Please, Bioware, please don't backtrack on the Elven changes. If you do, at least try to find a way to make them aesthetically pleasing but retain their alien, almost bestial mien. The Elven redesign was one of the best things about Dragon Age 2.
Sincerely, A Concerned Fan.

Agree (not with overly dramatic tone however).
Seconded. I really liked the DA2 elf design. Sure, as people have said, there were flaws, but the vision behind it all was something I really enjoyed.
There is no quicker way to turn me off a setting's elves than by making them look like short (or tall) pointy eared humans. Make them strange. Keep them strange.
With DAI, the devs seem to be treading an interesting middle ground. The concept art elves look pretty good, though I do think they could be better. I think it's mostly the noses that don't quite work for me, as I really appreciated the almost cattish/halla-ish nose bridges in DA2.
I'm glad it's not a total backtrack though. And in part I think we can put the changes down to a move towards a more photorealistic visual style in this game, as opposed to the more cartoonish style of DA2. But I hope the message of this thread doesn't fall on deaf ears, and that the backtrack doesn't go too far.
TL;DR -- Keep elves weird.
P.S. Loving the clothes.

No one is petitioning for Dwarves to be ugly or "less human" even though they're just stunted humans.
Making elves "unique" by changing how they look doesn't make them unique, giving them a unique culture and taking a different narritive take on elves makes them unique.

Why do elves have to be weird?Elves have always looked like humans except for wood and dark elves,so I don't understand this obsession with wanting DA elves to look like some of alien species just for the sake of looking different.ClavicleGKS wrote...
