Now that is a solid idea masakari and I appreciate it! Though how do I install Linux onto it without being able to load the computer up past the initial screen to run the install? One second, off to do some research...

then you either need to buy a second hdd to install on or ask a friend/coworker to kindly hook it up on their system to get the data.

If his HD died that means it isn't spinning - that means it's unreadable.

Plugging it in as a slave drive to try to recover the data won't help if the thing isn't spinning anymore.

Basically, in the bios, set it to boot from the new HD. install ubuntu, xubuntu... something easy. Use the program Dolphin to search through the old HD. (might have to force mount the old drive, if you need to, PM me and I can walk you through it.) shouldn't be too hard, might take a little while just to figure linux out :-p but that is the crux of the issue.

Read earlier Hathur, the HDD itself appears ok. The OS is the issue.

Any advice on how to go about Data Recovery? Whats the fastest way of doing it, what do I need to do it? To clarify, the Hard Drive itself is ok, the OS has gone haywire, won't start and will require a full re-format. So technically, it's all still sitting happily on the Hard Drive but I can't get to it. I don't have another desktop to swap the HD into?

About 7-8 years back I had a hard drive's partition information disappear on me. It had digital photography on it, including pics of my newborn son's first year. (Yes, I know, make backups!) Anyways, I found some hard drive recovery software I bought for around $80 that (after installed to a new hard drive) managed to recover all but one of the partitions on the borked drive, so I got most of my stuff back. No, sorry, I can't remember what it was called.

So if you search around, you might find some software that could help you (and maybe even some free/open source ones).

Edit: I seem to be redundant, as there's been a bunch of new posts since I started typing. Anyways, good luck!

Win7 is a much longer install, and you only get a certain # of installs before you have to call MS and get a new activation code every time you do it. I didn't want to waste one of his installs.

That sucks. btw its exactly 1 week, not one week and 2 days. ;)
Benefits of having a console is i won't have to worry about that, fortunately :)

So you are under the  impression that an X360 HDD can't die?

If you X360 doesn't have a HDD then you think a memory unit can't go belly up either?

This fantasy world you live in is so nice and warm!

If the OP is sure it's not the HDD but the OS has crashed, you can get a USB to HDD adaptor for about $12 from newegg and your HDD becomes an external HD with all your data (assuming you didn't do anything stupid like encrypt the user data).

One week and two days to go. One week. And my hard drive dies.

It's so funny it's not even amusing. I had five completed, level 60 imports ready to roll and they're gone :( I don't even believe it. I'm PRETTY sure I can get the desktop back up and running before ME2 rolls out, but now I have nothing to import. Utterly soul destroying! Any suggestions? Can I do anything here?

This is the exact reason I keep a backup of all my important savegames on a separate memory unit. I'd probably drive the console through the tv if the harddrive died a week before ME2 launch and I didn't make a save.

Hmm... there is hope yet, then. There's also a host of programs online which seem able to recover information even after I reformat. Bit of a risk though, I'm going to investigate masakari's suggestion first!

As a community favor though and as thanks for all the help, I shall share this advice free. For the love of god, back up your saves. Do it right now. Stop reading this, go do it. I turned off my comp perfectly fine after some MW2 last night. It won't ever start again! And believe me, I nearly put my fist through my monitor!

All you need to do is use a Live CD of linux to get the files you need. You'll need a flash drive to store them on or a CD could work.

This of course hinges on the fact you have another computer capable of burning a CD.

If you haven't reformatted the HDD yet you could try plugging the HDD into another computer (or running a Linux Boot DVD) to copy the necessary files onto some sort of portable HDD solution.

That sucks dude. You might want to consider a 360. In the long term your saves are 100% secure and you know they'll be there and fully functional in a trillion years when Mass Effect 50 billion comes out and you'll need all your saves ready for import.

+1 on what tommythetomcat said...make a Knoppix boot disk, boot off of that, and then copy your ME data to a flash drive or external hard drive. I've recovered data off of "dead" machines many, many times that way.

That's why I keep my save files on 3 different USBs.
