I liked him but I wasn't enarmored of him.
Bioware chose him to kind of tie things together in the transition from DA2 to DAI.

This is what I was thinking as well.
He pretty much saw everything and has close ties w/Hawke. Maybe he might talk about her/him in DA:I and her/his decisions.
Varric's pretty cool

I'm being partially snarky there.
Varric, on the other hand, is a returning companion whose presence is at least understandable. That's because Cassandra effectively had him in custody in DA2 while she interrogated him and had him tell his story. I think she may have kept him on a short leash after that (possibly to help search for Hawke?), or he decided to stick around after being released from interrogation.

I see plenty of reasons for him to show up again.

It's because Varric is a funny, charming raconteur who dresses fashionably. Sten just says "No" 99% of the time.
I'm being partially snarky there. For the record, I actually liked Sten quite a bit, and I'd like to see him again. However, he went back home and has no reason to come back short of a new qunari invasion.

This^
Also, lets not forget that Varric has alot of contacts in Thedas which makes him a very useful guy if they need info. He also makes an excellent diplomat, so more reason to have him join the Inquisition.

But of all the companions in DA 2, he was pretty much the only interesting one because of his witty tongue, and somewhat carefree nature. Compare to others (some whiny emo freaks, a serious he-woman, a socially retarded, overly fluffy bloodmage, Mr. Stick in the mud prince / chantry brother ...) I'd say he's the only one I don't mind having around again.
I think they are going to bring back companions from DA 2 anyway (to have some kind of connection between games???). So, well Varric is the best choice there.

A bit like ME2/ME3 Garrus (which is a pity, because I really loved ME1 Garrus).
I also felt it was unfair that he should be the only one who was allowed to remain neutral throughout the game
This was supposed to be my Hawke's part
Surprisingly enough, when you side with the mages, he says "Thank the Maker", and I couldn't help but think that this was the writers speaking here.
For all we know, everything he's been telling in DA2 is a huge lie and he's been manipulating everybody

Tbh, I thought Varric's design was kinda ridiculous. I'm a fan of classic dwarves like Gimli or Oghren: epic beard, almost always drunk, hot headed, and are beasts in close combat. Varric is pretty much opposite: He has no beard, fancy clothes (thoguh imo, look a bit gay), a rogue with crossbow, and a story teller of all thing.

Yep I agree with this
Personally I was very indifferent to seeing Varric in the trailer, and I sighed a little to learn he is a companion. I also wasn't a huge fan of him in DA2; of course I did not dislike him, not one bit. But I never took him with me, at least not after my first playthrough.
I hope he's not a romance option, either, because that would leave me just one other guy. Of course, I'm also a little torn because I know a lot of people WANT Varric as a LI, and I want them to be happy, too.
