I just don't get why so many people liked varric. It's not that I did not like him it's that he was so damn boring. His crossbow thing was so useless and he did nothing interesting. So why did they bring him back. My favorite characters were sten and morrigan.

Because Varric is a well written charecter, and BioWare picked the right voice actor to play Varric. If you focus on what happen on DA2 between Varric and Cassandra you would realize just how important Varric is. It should be of no surprise that Bioware brought back Varric.

Really, along with Shale and Nate Varric was the only one I had any particular desire to see come back as a companion.

I don't get it either. Very boring character, and since he is written as if he should be a funny guy, it just comes across as cringeworthy. Very disappointed to see this character return - especially as a companion.

I love Varric and I am happy to see he will be one of the companions. I used him almost constantly in DA2. His combat skills were good. His banter was amusing. He is also a person who has a lot of knowledge, a useful asset.

But I don't think he would be right as a LI (not after reading the comics anyway).

What?? Varric was a true bro and a loyal friend. Not incredibly whiny as opposed to 90% of the other cast of characters. He had humour, charm and glorious chest hair.

At the very least I think it's cool that they bring back a character that was close to Hawke, just so he can reference all the stuff you did in DA2.

He's an interesting characters that still have room to developed.

Just... don't comeback like Anders, change his name and look then Anders is a completely
new character.

You didn't like Varric? I thought he was the best companion in DA2 and the only one I wanted to see return from that game.

Because he's the only thing that is worth saving from DA2.

The red lyrium stuff is supposed to be explored in DAI as well. He's also a member of the Merchant Guild and run a spy network, two things that the Inquisitor will need.

I see plenty of reasons for him to show up again.

Yeah, Varric has ties to the red lyrium from being in DA2 and it being a major factor in his personal story.  Then there is also his other aspects you mention which weren't really used much in DA2 but the inquisitor will be starting up an organization that will need something with ties like that.

Varric was chosen because of all the extra storey on him from the dark horse comics when isabela, varric and King Alister go off looking for Alisters farther.

bringing these three members together helped tie DA:O and DA2 together into DA3

Varric was hilarious. He was tender, he was a caretaker note his interactions with the more vulnerable members of your party, Merrill and Bethany. Varric was you brother in arms you knew if he had to he would crawl fifteen miles over broken glass if he had to just to pull your ass out of the fire. Varric tried so hard to help Anders because Anders was his friend. Varric was wrtten as the perfect brother, the perfect comrade. Through it all he always kept his **** together even with his brother. He cared enough about Hawke to grieve with her. The writing team took enough time to develop a character with depth and many fans have responded to him by wanting more.

Yay for Varric:wub:

Would you rather they bring back Oghren again?

Aw come on..he was really fun, very loyal. Took care of his friends, had some great dialogue and most of all wasn't a whiny, complaining, brooding, narcissistic douche.

yeah

but mass effect is a trilogy. dragon age has different protagonists.
people coming back is a bigger deal.

I'm just gonna say it....chances are he was brought back because hes popular, and they wanted to make sure he was involved somehow in-game once again.

Still a damn good character, but sometimes popularity gives you another adventure. I am sure they will weave a way for it to make sense, but I would bet the motivation is purely fanservice in intention, for the most part.

No. His self absorbed drunknesses got a bit dull for me after a while.

Varric was awesome and a fixture in my Hawke's party, so I'm quite happy he's coming back.

Varric is my absolutely favorite character in the Dragon Age franchise so far--I couldn't be more thrilled that he's back.
