You think Varric is more boring than Sten??

I realize this is the second response, but Sten is not boring.  I thought Sten was fascinating, to be honest.

Moral?  People find different companions likable/unlikable.  Why Varric?  Why not?  He's funny, he has a prior rleationship with Cassandra, he's probably one of the most popular characters in the franchise, and, most importantly, he's the one connection to Hawke.  You've got Leliana and Morrigan that can talk about the Warden.  Hawke needs some represenation.  Because whether you like it or not, the world is the way it is because of Hawke and Anders. And if the Qunari have a large role, and they seem to be rather angry, I'd believe  Isabella has something to do with it.

On a somewhat related note, I think there are people here who want Dragon Age 2 whitewashed and remvoved from the Dragon Age canon.  And I'm glad that's not happening.

Meaningful characters = one-dimensional whiner who says nothing but 'mages' every 5 second.

You're not chewing hard enough.

Anders was foreshadowed the **** out of in DA:A. Justice was basically doing this:

You know, I read your part of the post before the quoted part, and I actually thought you were talking about Fenris.

Just thought that was funny.

Varric's not the best DA2 companion for me. Isabela is.
And he's not the best dwarf for me either. Sigrun is.

So if devs wanna put a returning companion into DA3, I'd like to see Sigrun or Isabela instead of Varric. But as philosopher Jagger once said, 'You can't always get what you want'.

Varric was likely chosen because it's logical to have DAII's narrator bridge the gap to the third game. More than that, he's the only squadmate who could reprise that role without causing a veritable firestorm; all the others have hatebases as significant in size as their fans'. Varric, conversely, is the Garrus of Dragon Age: he's almost universally liked, and also like Garrus, he is bland and overrated for (unfunny) memetic purposes.
But at least he isn't outright irritating and completely useless to the plot.

I'm sorry that you're upset that Bioware chose Varric to return as an NPC instead of Minor Character #57 or DAO party member #6 like you were hoping, but at lot of people see him as the 'best' thing DA2 had to offer. I agree, and keep in mind that I actually liked DA2.

The problem with bringing back nearly anyone from Origins is the same issue with the Old God Baby, in that like half the cast can either be dead or out of touch. Alistair can be king, Leliana could be/should have been dead if not for a retcon, Sten can be dead (or Arishok), Shale could have been left as a statue, Zevran can be dead, Wynne as well, and so on. You can't even rely on the Dog, because the Warden can kill him too! You know the instant Bioware changes something to allow for this, even if it went against someone's save, the board will be up in arms.

Because he doesn't whine or preach in your ear for the entire game.  In DA:2 that was a massive plus point for any character.

I assume Varric was picked because he was popular, relatively free of entanglements, he's not a LI and to provide a link to the events of Kirkwall.

Varric is easily in my top 3 favorite characters of DA2. I had in my party most of the time just to hear the banter he had with various characters. Varric is a very good choice to carry on into DA:I.

Varric was one of my favorite characters too, and he was the only what that didn't start bickering or saying ridiculous things with other party members.

Having Merrill and Fenris in the same group was awful. Fenris would call her a **** every few minutes for apparently no reason. We get it. You hate mages.

Because Varric is one of the few good things about DA2.

Also he's always alive at the end, I guess

Nah Feneris at least mixes it up a bit with slavery so it's mages mages mages mages mages slavery slavery mages mages.

Anders is just straight up mages mages mages.

One thing I can appreciate about Fenris is that he does indeed have an actual personality outside of his issues with mages and even seems to get a sort of life later in the story.  His biggest crime is looking like a bad JRPG reject.

Anders is so focused on mages that it makes him a one-dimensional nutcase

Try hard? I think he really didn't care about much. You side with the Templars... OK. Side with the mages... that's cool too.

Varric was the main reason I found the strenght to finish DA2. (wanted to know what Cass would to to him after the interrogation.)

the only mentally sane companion with Aveline in all Kirkwall. I think he wasn't as developed as he should have, and maybe all the love he have from the fans is not totally his merit, but for the demerits of the others companions.

still, I'm quite happy to have him again as a companion (and I would not be against a romance with him. not at all. I would not cry if he isn't a LI, but I would be happy if he is.), as I am to see again Morrigan.
Now I only need to see again Zevran (to erase from my memory the horrible face he had in DA2) and Warden Alistair (same face problem I had with Zev) and confirmation of my Warden being alive, and I'm a happy girl.

I loved Varric due to his personality, and I'm fond of the dwarves.

I like the companions that aren't drama queens and who can take a joke, as well as keep the game fun.  While some companions, like Morrigan, are well written, I can't stand their constant complaining and negativity.  I prefer companions who can help keep the adventure from being less serious and depressing, despite the reality of the situation.

Sometimes I feel like the only person who dislikes Varric. It's not outright hatred, but he grates on the nerves a bit. I dislike the smooth, jokey "bro" characters who BW seems desperate for me to befriend. So I suspect Varric will be trotted out only rarely and will be the go-to sacrifice if such is required.
