What could BioWare learn from other multiplayer games to make Mass Effect 4 Multiplayer something truly amazing?

I think the biggest thing they need to learn from other MP games is to not stop support for the game while people are still playing it and the next game is still more than a year away.

Something that I'd love to see ME4 multiplayer do could be learned from what could've been great from a forgotten (with good reason) RTS game 'Tom Clancy's Endwar'.

The main online play in Endwar had you as one of the three factions, playing games against the other factions in locales that could be won or lost on a global scale map, allowing for a war to be fought between the factions in a way that players themselves affected.

Now, I'm not saying that Mass Effect should have any PvP, but what I think would be a really cool idea would be that every match won and lost in the multiplayer could affect the war with whatever the heck they decide is the enemy in a way that would affect story in DLCs and such, complete with a real-time statistical way of showing HOW players are affecting it. That would be epic in my books.

There is not enough THIS  in the world to say how much I agree with this statement.

It would also be nice if they didn't release it in such a state that after a year or support it still feels like it's not quite finished.

I think they've done an fantastic job with the multiplayer game, i've enjoyed it more than any other game I've ever played, being a cooperative multiplayer rather than a PvsP game has a lot to do with it. The multiplayer component of the next game will be huge, i hope they take the time to understand what made this multiplayer experience so popular and not try and change it into something else, basically more of the same only bigger and better, bigger more varied maps, more character & weapon customisation and an improved RNG system would be good, it's currently way too hard to get the equipment you want to use.

For now, I just have some gameplay mechanics I'd like removed.. I'm late to the discussion, oh well:

1) Remove friendly screen shake.. I can see the challenge behind certain enemies disrupting your aim.. but not your teammates spamming nearly any power in the game to cause some sort of screen shake.. not to mention weapons like the Venom that has become so popular as of late.

2) I shouldn't need a piercing mod.. or a weapon capable of piercing to shoot through teammates... especially when large, even huge characters are introduced like the GJ and Krolord..

3) No clipping on teammates for similar reasons as #2

4) Spawn immunity/DR for the enemies.. likely just a relic of the engine but if enemies are going to spawn in LoS... or right around the corner.. I better have the same chance of gibbing them as they do me.

5) Geth prime corpses remaining as obstacles, Banshees/Praetorians persisting as an obstacle after death.. if something is dead, I no longer should be able to interact with it in any way.

6) Brute collapse damage after being slain, this is just annoying.. unlike the Geth Prime and Atlas explosions which do not take as long to finish and are more intuitive (imo).

And finally, less of a gameplay mechanic but more of a feature.. Severely limit the use of weapons like the Cobra missile launcher.

This is just a preference of mine developed through many instances of.. disappointment.. when watching missiles "wasted" on spawns of enemies for the purpose of running up the score rather than to save the game or save a teammate. That's just how I feel the ML should be used, for emergencies. Balancing the game with less of a reliance on the ML would be interesting as well. Although, I would argue the game now, even on Platinum, can be played without the Cobra.

+a lot

You can easily finish Gold games in ~15-17 minutes without using a single rocket to speed things up. It does require at least 2 solid players in the team, though.

I hear this thing called Mass Effect 3 MP is very amazingly awesome. They could copy lots of things from that game to make Mass Effect 4 MP extremely amazing awesome.

1)I am not really sure... It really never bothered me that much, maybe reduce it a little bit, but if was gone completely... that would be boring

2)The Frostbite 3 engine will take care of that... but maybe not in a way that you would like it :D... In the Frostbite engine an enemy can be saved by a glass window from a sniper rifle shot to the head if the bullet does not hit the window at a 90° angle. There is actually not much wall penetration at all in the Frostbite engine, you can destroy some cover, but you cannot shoot through certain materials... which is a good thing in my opinion, wallbanging with wallhack equipment is not really a challenge...

3)not gonna happen

The Cobra in its current form will be removed from the game I am pretty sure...

Not Gameplay-Related but it has a Online feature:

Something they should learn from the "Developers" of Need for Speed Rivals is the following:

You can Screw up an entire Game when you make the wrong things depending on Framerate, or treat your Customers like idiots (no fear from me here, i dont think Bioware ever did that).
The NFS Guys capped the PC-Version to 30 FPS , if you go higher via Sartup Parameters the Game goes Nuts.

See one funny Review from TotalBiscuit, The Cynical Brit :

Just saying, because this true NFS-Disaster is also using the Frostbite 3 Engine, and in my opinion they screwed up hard (from a Technical standpoint) .

They need to fix the AI so that they do not need to implement ridiculous fake difficulty such as the insta-kill BS or bullrush style enemies who can kill even tanky characters in just a few shots.

Make the AI capable of actually being tactical and challenging the players without having space ninjas who can kill a krogan in one stab. Krogan have redundant organs and even their entire nervous system has a backup. A single stab would not kill them.

I have a feeling that the success of MP will allow them to broaden the MP allowing more powers with more diverse characters catering to more playstyles. Implementing more options for gamemode and enemies will also give more diverse counterplay options without having to rely on gimmicky special properties to artificially raise the difficulty of the game.

This is an interesting choice for me. I think the game as it stands is much better for having the synch kills in than if it was identical but without them. It could be replaced with something else to keep the difficulty up and force players to move, but I think you need the balance between enemies that are dangerous at range and enemies that danagerous in close. I'm open to them removing them but I wouldn't want to see ME4 all about camping.

Lol well played.

I feel that there is still a widespread lack of understanding that this was a fantastic BETA (essentially) for the MP to come. Or, in TV terms, a backdoor pilot for MP.

Yeah yeah "backdoor pilot" ha ha, get it out of your systems than google it if you need to. Safe search on I suppose.

Time to bump this I guess, let us give the developers some more thoughts on the matter!

Just as a sidenote of the interesting discussion here.

A lot of people mention GoW, and I don't know if you are aware that Chrys Wynn -GoW senior producer- is now senior development director for the next ME, so I guess it's not crazy to see some positive aspects of GoW in the next ME.
