In some, I'm wielding one of my active weapons, as are my companions, in others, its the old Avenger and Predator combo.  So, what gives?

Bioware said officially before the games release is scripting problems as some guns doesn't work as intended in cut scenes. This is very blatant in the Leviathan DLC where they tried to keep your weapons but might look odd like a three shot claymore or any non-automatic weapon firing suppressing fire like an assault rifle.

Others are to allow plot armored characters to live, an example would be swapping out your claymore/harrier and your teammates typhoons and hurricanes for pistols which can be blocked by space ninja magic.

Funny fact is if you carry an Adas as you main weapon, you will often see its effects as if Shepard is holding it like an an invisible club like in cutscenes or sometimes when climbing ladders.

Consider the VS confrontation. How pathetic would be killing Kaidan/Ashley/Udina with a Scorpion?

I would love to kill Udina with a scorpion. His insides would make great wall decoration, methinks.

I'm still amused by the suicide mission/collector base cut scenes. Everyone suddenly gains assault rifles proficiency's and, by that time, weak ass M8's ta boot!

I'm still seeing this weird moment from time to time.

Witness, the magic transforming Assault Rifle.
Now it's a M-8, now it's a Collector Assault Rifle, now it's an M-8 again!

It's even worse for the pistol, which is permanently the stock standard pistol (whatever that is).

Sometimes I look at my squadmates and am jealous, because their weapon loadouts work a lot better in cutscenes then mine! :crying:

For some reason, Sheppard loves the Predator. :)

I just had the weirdest cut scene behavior I have ever seen. This was for a NG+. We were on Mars and Eva has just mauled Ash. My loadout was a Locust and M-11 Suppressor. I had the Locust equipped, but when it switched to the cut scene of Sheppard telling the robot to let Ash go it switched my weapon. I was using the Locust, but in the cut scene Sheppard is shown with the Predator. Then, when you regain control and are supposed to shoot the robot I am no longer equipped with the Locust, nor am I equipped with the Predator. Instead, the game has switched me over to the Suppressor! Which might not seem like a big deal, except the Suppressor only has a 6 round clip. So I fire off those 6 rounds and then I have to reload, only time has dialated and the reload is taking forever and the robot is getting closer and closer. I wasn't sure I was going to make it, but Sheppard managed to reload just in time to get off one more shot, the fatal one, before Eva tore her head off.

The real question should be why does Shepard always uses a pistol in cut scenes when he's going to execute someone? an assault rifle is just as capable of a single discharge at short range.

It's a scripting issue. It's probably easier to script a sequence visually and audio wise if it is done with a certain type of weapon. I just wish the Carnifex was used rather than the Predator though. I got in the habit of carrying those guns (Avenger and the Predator) though with my soldier class Shepard to make it seem more fluid.

Because it's more practical to use a pistol as an execution weapon?

Using an assault rifle, you'd have to step back a little and then lineup the gun for a headshot.
And this gives the enemy time to grab the barrel, push it aside and attack you.

Whereas a pistol is just point and shoot.

And if they try to grab it, pistol whip them!

I'd be interested in finding out how you could modifiy the game to use the different weapons for the cutscenes and wether it would be a simple change or a complex one.

I think it would be mariginally challenging. Primarily because of the animations and the likelyhood of clipping. I mean FemShep and many other characters already have a hard time holding their guns correctly due to Bioware's laziness to comb over these things - it would be quite a task to "correct" animations, skeletons, etc to fix everything. Probably more trouble than it's worth. It's a neat idea though - I've thought about it as well. Among many other things in relation to fixing the series' other glaring technical issues.

The problem is, Shepard can have any loadout the/she wants, so they would need to have 5 different cut-scenes (SMG, HP, AR, SG, SR)...not even considering the variety of weapons in ME3; you can't have a cut-scene featuring suppressive fire if Shepard wields a Widow or a Scorpion, or you can't have Shepard reloading a PPR or a Lancer.

You didn't have those problems in ME1 where Shepard had every wepon category equipped and they were all the same in the category, in ME2 every shepard had either a HP or an SMG and all they were broadly similiar. The weapon variety and the freedom in loadout management were at the expense of the cutscenes, I don't really mind it.
