Aw come on sir. You make it sound like we all downgrade the other lead characters/party members into those categories when you *know* that's not true. One of the best things about Dragon Age 2 was that my party members got in my face or disagreed with things that I did.
They were my partners, friends, rivals. I never saw them as just followers or someone to "get jiggy" with. Was I disappointed that Aveline wasn't interested in being in a romance with Hawke? Yeah, because I genuinely developed feelings for her.
And, on the flip side, I was elated that Merrill turned out to be such an amazing, pretty complex romance especially if you didn't see eye to eye on things. Bottomline, for me, these are characters first and foremost. Their not just a means to an end.
