So I've finished my third playthrough of ME3, and there was this 'small' thingy which got my attention, the Memorial Wall, or to be specific: your name on it.

So why is your name 'Commander Shepard', even though you've chosen a different first name? Every other person on that wall (including Jack, but excluding Legion) has their first and last name on it, except for Shepard, who just has his/her rank listed...
It shouldn't be to hard to have a customizable texture which includes your first name, so why didn't they?
I'm not complaining about the fact your love interest keeps calling you 'Shepard', since the reason for that is obvious. But a simple text-ure?

Some people have a name that's five days long and nobody knows your first name.

That is a good question my name isn't "Commander Shepard"

Laziness? How many man-hours do you figure the feature would have been worth? I can't think of any other place in the series where textures are generated on-the-fly,, so we're talking about adding whole new capabilities for a few seconds.

I'm not too bothered by it. Now if there's nit-picking to be done in regards to a memorial wall, I think the one on the Citadel is more deserving. I still remember doing one of my first playthroughs last year and finding myself looking at the memorial wall and the people around it. A salarian with a comforting hand resting on a human's shoulder (or vice versa?). And I looked at the wall, thinking about all the loved ones lost in this war, when suddenly I noticed... the same images being reused.
Great immersive moment ruined. :-(

What about the party photo at the end of the Citadel Party?

Would have been very difficult to do it, and not at all worth it.

I'm not programmer but even I know that it would be quite hard to implement on one plaque names kile JIM or BOB and name like THEODORE, VRATISLAVA od JEAN-PIERRE, not mentioned asian symbols or cyrilic.

Because you could make a very silly or very long name.

See, this is why y'all should put Commander as his first name.

They could have made it like: Cmdr. (Initial) Shepard, IMO.

if (length(name) > 10) then print (name[0] ."." )

Shepard's first name is already limited in length and can only be written in the latin alphabet, so those are all moot points.

What's the maximum surname length anyway in the ME-games? Or is it really something like 255 characters?

EDIT:

Ah figured as much.

And what would it matter if people are trying to be 'funny' and name their Shep 'Azzburgers' or something, it's still their choice...

OK, no chinese, but except Jean-Pierre all names are possible in ME3 (10 signs limite I think). And there is still big difference between:

AL SHEPARD
JEAN  SHEPARD
JEREMY SHEPARD
THEODORE SHEPARD
VRATISLAVA SHEPARD

And all these names have to fit same plaquet in same font like rest of the wall.

Longest possible name on a plaque is 'TALIZORAH VAS NORMANDY', and that one seems to have the maximum number of characters to fit on it.

I'm thinking more if maybe it couldn't be done, since e.g. I'm a Swede and My different Shep's names have sometimes started with Å, Ä or Ö (or included those letters)

which e.g. in Denmark and Norway is Å (actually AA many times- hehe), Æ and Ø

and then there is Polish, Russian, Japanese etcetera and so on

Maybe -- and I have no idea how it works --- maybe, that is why…?

Just maybe…

I think they tried to keep the memorial board respectable.

If the name was customizable - A.S.S.Hole Shepard as a name would not look good.

Because of this old standby:

They just didn't care.
