In the origin stories and the prologue of DA2 there were locked chests and doors we could only open if we played as a rogue because none of the first companions we got were ever rogues. We always got rogues and a few times we got mages but rogues were only recruitable later in the story. I found that really frustrating and I'd like it if we either recruited Varric or another rogue very early in the story or if there just weren't locked chests and doors right away.
What do you think?

There were maybe three locked chests in DAII before you recruit Varric.

That said, darn that Daveth and his low lockpick skill.

It's never really bothered me because I've always thought. "Well, if I was a rogue I could open that, but oh well... I'll probably find much better loot later anyway!" Plus, wasn't there only like one chest in the DA2 prologue? Idk.

That said, it wouldn't hurt to have a rogue be one of our first companions. I have a feeling we'll get Cassandra and Varric early on, so you might get your way.

...which is why, as an OCD lock-busting maniac, I almost always play rogues.

Otherwise, it's almost certainly the case that, even without a toolset (...sniff), we can probably throw together a nice mod to provide a lock-breaking spell, or lock-bash of some sort.  :wizard:

This is why I usually play a rogue first time around. In DA2 there is a junk pair of boots in the chest you can't open and in DAO I've got a lock bash mod that lets me pick chests with damage to the contents.

asap? Omg the memories! AsaP used to be my handle on MGO. (in relation too how fast i would die)

Srsly now, when playing as a warrior for the HN origin, and DA2's prologue, the locked chests tore at my soul.

Try playing as a non-rogue in Baldur`s Gate. Plenty of locked chests in the intro bit of that game. they contain quite valluable and usefull stuff as well.

That is one of the main reasons I always play a rogue the first playthrough.

Candlekeep? I remember there being only three chests, plus IIRC you had to wait for Knock (lvl2 spell) when rolling as a mage or bash (not good) as a warrior.

It's sad that DA lacks alternative methods for lock picking amongst the classes.

I've always found that a bit wierd. It's supposed to be a reward for playing/having brought a rogue, but instead it feels like a punishment for not doing so.

Rather than feeling beneficial with a rogue, it simply feels like the baseline, collecting what was there. So it's a design choice that doesn't provide a feeling of benefit, just frustration.

Along with the blank scroll, they sure are.

I'd welcome those few extra pieces of copper if the alternative meant turning tricks at Ostagar.

100% agree with OP; I've always felt the same way. Back in Origins I felt that it was kind of strange that when we got that extra help in Ostagar we'd get a second warrior (third if you were a warrior yourself) and a mage instead of a rogue that could open any locked chests that were in the tower.

The items in those chests were hardly anything worth crying over. Beside, it's like a reward for the rogues. Their feel like a weak version of warriors at the start of the game so they have to feel special somehow.

Candlekeep, yes. 4-5 chests, I think. Some of the ones at the inn has some nifty stuff in them.

For me it's really more about the extra Xp points we get from opening the chests rather than the actual content of the chests. Also, it's a little annoying to see a chest in front of you with no possible way to open it unless you chose to play as a rogue...

I agree. It'd be nice to have the option to bash a locked chest with maybe the possibility of some of the items being broken. Didn't KotOR 2 have something like that?

In DA:I, all classes will have 'exploration' skills that allow you to go places or do things. So DA:I will give you a rogue and then there will be a door that only a PC warrior can bash and a bridge that only a PC mage can fix.

Enjoy!

Exploration skills? Like experimenting with controlled substances or non-socially conformed sexual encounters?

On topic, I wouldn't mind that not being a rogue means you missed the low-level loot that was likely in that chest...

...what bothers me is the missed XP. You could get more from popping open a chest than you would for an entire fight of gutter bandits. Each one of those passed up grates on my XP-maxing nerves.

This. Typically those first few chests have useless things, but I have to unlock them all. When that need has been satiated, I can roll a mage :D

Varric is supposed to be one of the first companions you recruit and he's a rogue.
