So, if you play as a male in DA2, Anders says that he and his friend Karl used to be lovers and asks Hawke if that bothers him. If you play as a female, he does not. Do you think that means it didn't happen when you play as a female Hawke or he just doesn't tell her? And if it's the latter, then why didn't he? He wanted to be with Hawke and thought that'd make her less interested? Or did Bioware think that if the fans knew Anders was with a guy before they wouldn't be interested in romancing him and just decided to leave that conversation out?
Were Karl and Anders former lovers if you played as lady Hawke?

Presumably. At least, I'd think so. I don't think Anders explicitly mentions it to male Hawke either unless he flirts with him at least once before.

Actually I think he always mentions it to male Hawke; he mentioned it to mine and I was avoiding flirt lines with him.
And the reason he doesn't mention it to femHawke is because hitting on a woman by talking about the first man you had sex with is NOT a good pick-up line.

Well if you're really nice to Anders, he assumes you're into him, too. It is possible to not even hear about that Karl was his former lover on a male Hawke. Don't flirt and don't be really nice.

Yes, he and Karl were lovers, even if you are a lady Hawke.
Why doesn't he tell you? He didn't think you needed to know.
He even tells you himself that there are a lot of things he doesn't tell you about. Including that dream where the Grand Cleric was completely naked. He also doesn't tell you that he slept with Isabela, did some special service at the Pearl nor that he knows a super sexy electricity thing.
Why does he tell male Hawke about this? Maybe to suggest that he's open to relationship with other men. Or maybe he felt more comfortable telling this to another man.

It still happens if playing as female Hawke. Anders just never goes into details about Karl with her. I just regarded the moment as a minor bit of reactivity to your gender choice in the game. In the same vain of Meeran trying it on with Female Hawke and not doing so with Male Hawke.

Well, if I'm talking to a girl I might be interested in, the very first thing I do is inform her of my past homosexual experiences. Best ice-breaker there is.franciscoamell wrote...
