What popular well-recognized films can you name that feature unattractive characters where their unattractiveness isn't part of the plot? What video games? What television series?

Not a movie but a show : Ugly betty easily ^_^ ...proves your point lol

Obscure? Jean Reno and Depardieu aren't obscure.

Unless you're living in Kentucky and some Calvinist out in the boondocks (which I kind of suspect you are).

Then you shouldn't have any problem at all naming films I recognize on the spot, should you?

Any Steve Bucemi movie ever. Namely Resevoir Dogs.

Why should I care to name any more for you? There's a bigger world than what you recognize as "most fiction". That's all that matters.

And I don't have to. That was never your original point. You said "most fiction". End of discussion.

"Unattractive" is heavily subjective.

Of course this can be countered by the fact that the most powerful female character in the game, Shepard, doesn't have large breasts.

If your correlation isn't consistent then chances are it doesn't exist.

But the correlation is consistent. It doesn't matter if there are a few instances of important people with small breasts, it matters that there are no unimportant ones with large breasts.

That's not the way it works. You claim is it gives the impression importance and power is measured by cup size, that the more important you are the bigger your boobs.

If the most powerful female in the game, and other powerful females, breaks that rule then it shows that your correlation isn't consistent. It shows that there isn't a correlation between cup size and power. You can't just point to NPC's and ignore all evidence that contradicts it.

Can anyone think of a single film, television series, or video game with a fat main character who is not comedic relief and whose fatness is not a focus of the plot? For film, it should be something remotely popular. Something I have at least heard of. I'll accept any television series or video game.

What's considered fat?

Russell Crowe frequently looks pretty pudgy in lead roles, and it's never referenced.

It was more likely that they needed at least one techy-type squadmate who couldn't be dead in previous games to balance out pure combat James and pure biotic Liara. EDI fit the bill nicely, and it's not like she could have got more done if she stayed a hologram. Besides, she was a good squadmate and if Joker's thing with her bothers you that much, well that's his problem.

This is true... But really, did it have to be EDI? It couldn't have been an original character?

We're not really saying she'd have gotten more done as the talking phallic symbol. I think we're saying that she didn't really get more done as sexbot.

I disagree on the good squadmate bit. She really didn't need to be a squadmate.

Joker's thing does bother me. As his superior, it bothers me, and being the commander of the Normandy it bothers me with him as my pilot.

That's why I discourage their relationship. He'll meet someone he can actually be with thats good for him. Dr. Michel or Kelly Chambers is nice.

This is just wrong.

Having EDI as a squadmate which can go down and shoot some Reapers with
you is a great addition to her character. Originally, she was quarantined to
the Normandy, but she wasn't just another button pusher; she was an integral
part of that ME2 team. She earned her squadmate status for ME3 more than
Ashley/Kaidan and Liara did, both of which apparently had more important things
to do than help their returning commander save the galaxy.

Joker and EDI are a perfect match. So is Garrus and Tali's love
relationship. Both these relationships have been blossoming since ME1. (I know
EDI did not exist for ME1, but the Normandy did and EDI is an extension of
the Normandy). Having Joker be with EDI is strengthening the bond the pilot has
with his ship.  A symbolic tribute, if you wish to take it this way, of
how close Joker and The Normandy are is expressed by a relationship with Joker
and EDI.

Why would you say "someone he [Joker] can actually be with"? By that,
do you mean someone who has an opposite set of human sexual organs, like the
two characters you suggested? Or someone who spends time, shares duties, and
continually tries to further understand him in spite of the clear physical
differences?

As his superior, you should start thinking like one. There is no one I would
want to be close to EDI (my ship's very consciousness) than her pilot, Joker.

The claim is the other way around. The order is important.

The only instance where the rule was broken appears to be Benezia.

So your little philosophy doesn't apply to all fiction...it only applies to every film I've ever heard of. And every television series, period. And every video game, period. Is that about right?

The Shield. Not quite fat for a main character.. just robust maybe.

Pretty much anything Jackie Gleason played besides the Honeymooners.

A majority of video games are action based. Fat people wouldn't really work well for that. Why do you exactly want a fat protagonist?

It's not about "philosophy". I don't care about any of that.

I'm just saying it's a big world. I don't know why you don't see it yourself. I happen to be a son of immigrants. Maybe I was a little more exposed than you. Doesn't hurt to start though.

I don't know why this is about fat specifically anyways. It's just about non traditional beauty and/or less than stunning looks.

The point is this - the overwhelming majority of popular fiction features attractive characters. That's film and television and video games. Even in fiction with ugly main characters, they very often have hot wives or girlfriends or something. Al Pacino films come to mind.
