I get items in Origins. I get that... but do I get the improved versions in Awakening as soon as I start it, or do I have to take the items with me and they'll upgrade as soon as I start? I see that most of the DLC adventure items have two versions, a weaker Origins and a stronger Awakening. How do I get the Awakening versions?

The Awakening versions will be in your inventory at the start of the game.
