Hi, new to these forums and sorry if this topic doesn't belong here, but anyone can tell me if bonus powers from a ME1 playthrough get carried over to ME2 when importing a character?

I'm in the middle of my soldier playthrough (I've finished the game once as a Vanguard, but lost the save files), and I was wondering if it was worth replaying the game just so I could have a "better" character (a.i.: Sentinel with Assault Rifle).

Thank you! ;)

No powers carry through. The entire power system was redesigned. See here for details on what carries over:

Thanks! So if I'm happy with the choices I made with my characters, there's really no reason to replay ME1, right? Even if I don't like the class, I can change it in ME2…

You can have a completely new class and new appearance. When you go into the character creation menu, read over the powers and weapons available to each class. Consult the wiki to figure out what the various power do since there is no description in the game until you have already made your character, by which time it is too late. Also, you may want to consult the guides (mass effect 2 soldier guide, for instance) in order to decide which class suits your play style.

The power system in ME2 is very different than ME1. In ME2 if you use a power you have to wait for it to cool down before you can use another. OTOH, cool down times are very short compared to ME1 so you can be using your powers every few seconds. No power takes more than 12 seconds to cool down, most take 6 seconds, and some take only 3 seconds.

One other big change (among many) related to powers is that your squad mates no longer need a line of sight to the target to use a power. Instead, if Sheppard has a line of sight s/he can get the squad mate to use a power on the target. Squad powers hit instantly if you cannot see the squad mate, otherwise you will see the squad mate go through a casting animation before the power hits. It is generally recommended that you turn squad power usage off so that you have control of when and on what your squad mates use their powers.
