Hi everyone,

I'm planing on my first playthough of ME2, but there's a question that I can't seem to find an answer for, and I'm afraid of getting spoiled looking for it, but anyone can explain to me how weapons work in ME2? Is it still like in ME1 where everyone could use any weapon, but only a few classes could advance in levels in them, or are we restricted to a few weapons? Do we still have things like Marksman, Overkill and Assassination in ME2?

Thanks! :)

When you create your character it will tell you which weapons a particular class can use. For instance, an adept can only use SMG's and pistols. (Everyone gets to use heavy weapons.) About halfway through the game you will have the opportunity to pick a new weapon to be able to use, or get a better version of one you already have.

Adepts, Engineers, and Sentinels start the game with pistols and SMGs.Vanguards start the game with shotguns, SMGs, and pistols.
Infiltrators start the game with sniper rifles, SMGs, and pistols.
Soldiers start the game with assault rifles, pistols, shotguns, and sniper rifles.

All classes can use heavy weapons.

In ME1, weapons overheated. In ME2, this has been changed to a thermal clip system which works like other guns in most shooters: each gun as a set clip size and when you run out of ammo for the clip, you reload.

Weapons have damage modifiers against different enemy defenses, which mean certain weapons deal more damage when used against certain defenses:
 - SMGs and shotguns deal a lot more more damage to shields and barriers
 - Pistols and Sniper Rifles deal a lot more more damage to armor
 - Assault Rifles deal a bit more damage to shields and barriers.
Weapon modifier values listed here. You can research upgrades which will make weapons even more effective against defenses.

Starting weapons (non-DLC):
 - Predator pistol
 - Mantis sniper rifle
 - Katana shotgun
 - Shuriken SMG
 - Avenger Assault rifle
 - Collector Assault Rifle (Digital Edition only)

Weapons you can find later in the game:
 - Scimitar shotgun
 - Carnifex pistol
 - Tempest SMG
 - Locust SMG (DLC)
 - Viper sniper rifle
 - Vindicator assault rifle

DLC pack weapons:
 - Incisor sniper rifle
 - Phalanx pistol
 - Geth Plasma Shotgun
 - Mattock assault rifle
 - Eviscerator shotgun

Heavy weapons:
 - Grenade Launcher (starting)
 - Missile Launcher
 - Avalanche
 - Beam Rifle
 - Cain
 - Arc Projector (DLC)
 - Blackstorm (pre-order bonus/DLC)

Partway through the game, you can pick up a class-exclusive weapon, or add another weapon category to your class:
 - Adepts, Engineers, and Sentinels can pick up assault rifle training, shotgun training, or sniper rifle training
 - Vanguards can pick up assault rifle training, sniper rifle training, or the Claymore shotgun
 - Infiltrators can pick up assault rifle training, shotgun training, or the Widow sniper rifle
 - Soldiers can pick up the Revenant assault rifle, Claymore shotgun, or Widow sniper rifle

OK, cool, thank you!

I just have one last question: Are there still Weapon Talents in ME2, like Marksman, Overkill and Assassination?

There is only one weapon specific "power" in ME2, which is the Infiltrator class power. If you level this power, which is only available to infiltrators, then times slows down for a short time when you pop out of cover to take a shot, but only if you are using a sniper rilfe.

The soldier class has adrenaline rush which slows down time and can be used at any time. It can be used with any weapon, or you can use it to more quickly move from one position to another. For instance, you can use adrenaline rush to charge up to an enemy and shoot it in the face with a shotgun before it has time to react.

Adrenaline Rush is essentially the successor to both Immunity and weapon talents on the Soldier class.

Tactical Cloak is the successor to weapon talents on the Infiltrator, more or less.

Neither of these powers works exactly like any ME1 talent though. There are less powers in ME2 than there were talents in ME1, so they rolled multiple things into powers in ME2.

For example, Overload strips shields but it also has Sabotage's ability overheat weapons (although the duration is greatly reduced relative to ME1).
