Ashley never gave me a chance to reject her. I was just being nice to her, never flirting, and then she asks me if I'm *still* interested in her.

Options:

1) Say yes, everyone comes with baggage.

2) Ask her if she is interested in Shepard.

3) Say yes, because Shep likes a challenge.

:(

Yeah, sorry, I've played ME several times (on my 6th playthrough right now) and it's pretty clear if you are leading someone on or not.

It isn't just about being "nice" or "mean."

There are fairly obvious places where the romantically interested says stuff showing their interest and you can choose the "cool your jets" options.

I do agree, however, that some of the romances did suddenly spring out of nowhere. I was wondering if the character was even interested and then suddenly, boom, it was almost like they were proposing - but that's where you can let them down.

My biggest complaint would be Ashley saying "Hell no" to what Liara seemed quite open to. But that's a complaint against Ashley, not the game design.

Thank you!  That's what I was talking about in my post earlier.  You literally have no option but to say you're trying to be with her in some way.  The middle should of been that you weren't interested in her in a romantic way at all.  Then once this happens you have to either be a douche to her, so she'll no longer be interested.  That or you kill her, which as I said didn't fit my Shepard so I was essentially forced into it.

The most obvious way to let someone down is when they ask if you are interested in Liara (speaking either human relationship) - they are asking because they are obviously interested in you.  Tell them you are interested in Liara (even if you AREN'T) and it's a soft let down.

I don't have the dialog options memorized, but I'm fairly certain there are other ways to say no without being a jerk.

Is that right?  If this is true then thank you a lot for this info.  I wish you knew the exact dialogue, because I don't recall getting the chance to do that.  I guess I'll just have to look out for it the next time I play the game.  If true, I probably never even bothered trying it because I wasn't trying to romance Liara.  Either way though, it does kind of prove me point.  It makes me break character, because I'm choosing an option that I don't believe in just for the sole sake of breaking off romance with Ashley.  Granted it does at least sound like a nicer way then being mean to her or killing her.

No. The flirting in ME1 that started to happen felt obvious. You could tell when a character started to like you, and the game did let you turn them down. ME2 probably will let you do the same. If not, then maybe that's where I'm supposed to be. My Shepard is in love with Ashley, but if he falls in love with someone else, he does. Personally, I try to play him the way that feels right. So if it feels right for him to do a particular thing at a time, I will.

I for one hope you can avoid accidental romances, in DAO as far as I could tell it was impossible, kept romancing Alastair even when I really didn't want to...

It's pretty easy to tell when you are romancing him and you can break the romances off pretty easily in DA:O.

I kinda think thats why they said "cheating" and not just said you were romancing someone else because it probably will.  I am wondering if in ME3 you get a confrontation scene and can choose, or if your old LI just basically says "**** you."

I actually think this would be interesting, a final choice between the two would be fun in ME3.

Of course ME3 will have some new romances as well.

I've done 7 playthroughs and I can't get them both to come after me! I play maleShep, and this is the only scene I've never seen. I always seem to get Liara, even when I think I'm romancing Ashley. I can get just Ash, but only if I don't talk to Liara at all. The scenario I want is to have them both come at me so I can pick Ash. I've chosen the 'baggage' option with Ash, and told Liara I'm interested, but still it's only Liara. Sometimes, I can't even get to the 'baggage' option with Ash- it never pops up and I think I'm being all flirty and such.

Accidental romance is nothing to take lightly. I walk to a room and women randomly want to marry me. I hate it...

I'm more worried about being forced into a relationship.

ME1 was pretty blatant with its attempts to push Liara on you. Not only was she the default character on the selection screen, but you practically had to cut her open and manually tie her tubes to give her the cold shower effect.

Unless you're a total a-hole to her, she's going to assume a romance. She even sticks with you when you try to initiate a three-way. I'm hoping they did a better job this time around and I don't have to invest in pepper spray just to keep Miranda or Thane off of me.

"If he's not the guy, if what he needs from you just isn't there, let him go. Break his heart, and make it a clean break. But if you really think you can love this guy ... I'm talking scary, messy, no-emotions-barred need ... if you're ready for that ... then think about what you're about to lose." --- Xander, BtVS "Into the Woods"

It's a little off base in terms of genre but the quote is universal in my opinion
