If it were "meant" (what a dumb phrase) to be played on the PC, wouldn't it logically follow that it be released for the PC either before or simultaneously with the console version?

Favourites: ME1 and ME3.

Least Favourite: ME2
I should note that i like ME2, just its my least favourite. it did nothing for the overall plot, and fighting mercs for like 75% of the game was annoying. Also the dumbing down of weapons and skills wasnt something good either. Also, i much preferred the ME1, crew and was dissappointed with their treatment in ME2 (VS especially). That being said, i did like a good amount of the characters, just not as much as the original crew. That, and the suicide mission and hub planets were cool too. Dialogue was good as well.

one other thing i hated, was working for cerberus and shepards death.
the latter was just a way to get shepard working for cerberus and get him away from the original crew. and that pissed me off

^ pretty much this for me too. ME2 was good but the polt felt like a tota throwaway plot to kill time inbetween 1&3 which would have been done in like two missions if it weren't for the focus on the inflated squad roster.

I honestly can't decide. I think they are all virtually equal. One thing I will say, I think ME3 is very underrated overall thanks to its ending (because some complaints I see about ME3 [now, I am not saying they are untrue] were also in ME2, but were not an issue in ME2, such as the differences in your choices from the previous game, as neither game has drastic differences based on your decisions outside of one thing, who you have before and after the SM).

Favorite, ME2:

Pros-
1. The characters. There were almost too many squadmates, but almost too many is my favorite amount. Gives me plenty of replayability without overwhelming me. And I think 12(?) was the perfect amount. I only wish I could have gotten them in any order [ie, being able to get Legion earlier to bring it to Purgatory for example]

2. The atmosphere. Like ME1, ME2 had a great atmosphere. And I think the hub worlds really did it justice.

3. The side missions. Unlike ME1, ME2's side missions didn't feel like the same one 30 times, as each one had a completely different layout instead of having 30 side missions with only 3 different layouts.

4. The DLC. Kasumi's Stolen Memory, Project Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker are all outstanding.

5. That final mission. Wow, just outstanding...

Now the game still had some cons-
1. you can't get all the characters in your own order. For example, you can't get Legion before the majority of the main game is done.

2. The game not having a plot that mattered.

3. The fact that you could just bring any weapon with you. For example, Adepts can't bring certain classes of weapons like the Assault Rifle without an upgrade.

4. The rest are little nitpicks, so I won't list them. They are minor gripes.

Least favorite: Tie between ME1 and ME3

Cons (ME1):
1. The Mako. While I don't mind the existence of it, it controls like garbage.

2. The rehashed side mission maps. They are all one of three/four locations, making them seem repetitive

3. The gameplay. Sure it was the first game, but I still think the gameplay was bad. By gameplay, I'm just referring to the combat.

4. The inventory system was a mess

Pretty much everything else is a pro.

Cons (ME3):

1. The lack of a good final mission. It should have been better/bigger than, or at least as grand as the Suicide Mission from ME2, but was a generic linear level.

2. The Lack of neutral options.

3. The ending. While I don't mind the endings now that we have Extended Cut and Leviathan, it is still not the epic ending ME deserved. I think the Synthesis/Destroy/Control/Refuse ending choice would have made an acceptable mid-tier ending selection, I think there should have been a lot more outcomes.

The rest are either positives or nitpick cons.

I enjoyed all of them; it was a great journey, so I love all of them. I do have a favorite though.

Favorite: ME3. The tension was done so well, and I really enjoyed it.
Least favorite: ME1. Extremely hard decision for me, but I picked ME1 because it does have a lot of annoying gameplay. Story-wise, excellent.

Favorite ME2: Because it´s more concentrated on the squad members and I love the characters of the Mass Effect Universe

ME3: I only liked the gameplay and Tuchanka but other than that it was a dissapointment, not a bad game I just feel it´s inferior to the other 2

Favorite is ME3 because of multiplayer. It was also very emotionally charged while playing it which was great, ending was extremely disappointing though.

Least favorite is ME1 because the gameplay was pretty poor and main story was so short (but while it lasted it was good). Outside of the main story I didn't think it was actually a very good game.

Least favorite: 3... Not because of the endings or anything of that nature, I just feel 3 was a lot of missed opportunities. That said, I have logged the most hours with 3 and think it is the funnest to play.

Favorite: 2... The atmosphere and feel of 2 I really enjoy. The whole bleakness of not returning from a suicide mission, working with Cerberus when all those who you used to work with in the Alliance/Council/Squadmates aren't there to support you. It just took what I loved about 1 and expanded it to so much more. It's hard to explain really, but the feeling I got after playing 2 was pure ecstasy. Now I can admit the story didn't help the franchise as it introduced a pointless enemy and the premise itself was bare bones, recruiter people and go through the Omega-4... That's it. BUT it was a helluva ride along the way.

How enlightening and insightful. ME1's plot was good (it's actually rather typical; it doesn't stand out much at all), but 2 and 3 are utter garbage in comparison (ignoring that you don't even mention the plots for 2 and 3, instead just saying "trash").

Favourite: 3. Best gameplay, fairly compelling plot, everything had been set up and polished, and at it's best were a string of the kind of emotional highs that the first two games had done so well, delivered better.

Least favourite 1: I'm sorry, I love ME1's plot and I believe it had the best villain with Saren, but the thing is just annoying to play and not all fun. Plus, the environments were drab and the dialogue was stilted in places. Later games felt more natural.

On balance, ME2 is probably the strongest game IMO.

However, ME3, contains some of my favourite aspects of the series, but also some of the worst.

I can't decide!

Maybe I could say that ME1 is my favorite. Just love the overall feel. The graphics, the sound-effects, the music.

Least favorite would be Mass Effect: Deception. ^_^

Loved ME2 because of the planet mining, good combat, dynamic story and expanded universe.  Overall I had the most fun with that one, played it over 5 times or so.

ME3 was my least favorite, I still liked it since they added exploding heads (I was a sniper) and a even more robust story...but god there was so much less freedome to make your shepard who you wanted.  Bioware literally forced you to be who they thought shepard was 80% of the time...i.e. the ending and little child cutscenes

Favorite: Mass Effect 3

Ending controversy aside, it was the best game of the series. The gameplay was much improved over both ME2 and ME1, and it was by far the most emotional chapter in the story. Squadmates also were better written and had deeper content. Compare Garrus' 'Ruthless calculus' conversation to any conversation in ME1 where he was complaining about C-Sec, or Liara's 'Name in the Stars' scene to ME1 info drops on Asari biology. It also had the best weapon & armor customization of the series.

Least Favorite: Mass Effect 1

I should probably first state that I love Mass Effect 1. Often when you rank something as your least favorite people tend to mistake that as saying you didn't like it, when it may just mean that you liked the other options more. Anyway, I think ME1 is massively overrated by much of the BSN out of nothing but sheer nostalgia. Its got by far the worst gameplay and inventory systems of the bunch, and the side missions tended be boring, repetitive, carbon copied time wasters. The story has plot holes and space magic just like the two sequels. In fact act I'd argue that ME1 has the largest plot hole of the series.

ME1 will always remain my favorite, but it's more because of the unfair advantage of its being first, coupled with such a deep storyline, than anything else.

It was the introduction to the universe. The entire thing was fresh and groundbreaking and the universe and saga so huge. It is hard to separate the excitement it produced from the actual gameplay or mechanics, etc. when trying to rank ME1 against the others, and frankly I don't see how or why I should, so yes. I can still say that as much as I hated the hot mess the inventory system was, the other two games never had a prayer of unseating the first in my heart.

I loved ME2 as well, but it grew on me, and because I was not in favor of the elevator removal (even once I found out just before ME2's release that those were loading screens), and absolutely hated the removal of the Mako and its exploratory missions (especially with the lame replacement we got), it took some time to become the furthest back I would go on a replay. When I did finally try ME1 again after 20 playthroughs of ME2, I couldn't even make it to meet Garrus.

ME3? Still haven't finished it. Sommes-nous fait ici? Waste of a cardboard box, even with the fighting improved. Too many promises not kept. The Reaper minigame sucked and quickly became unfinishable. And three games in, nobody ever figured out why having a fuel gauge on the Normandy (and the NEED for one) was a laughably senseless idea.

I'd have to say 1 is my favorite, having replayed it recently. Even though there are valid complaints with inventory management, Mako acrobatics, and carbon copy missions, the fact is that ME1 felt very retro sci fi, yet still new somehow and dark and mysterious. It had this wide galaxy with all these places we'd never been to, and I didn't feel like I was being given a North Korean guided tour through a state-sponsored amusement park. "Shepherd, go to this exotic locale and it looks -exactly- like a multiplayer level, but with different levers and some voice overs and it's forty meters across!" "Shepherd, ignore that old games like Half Life and Deus Ex have wide open areas with exploration options; just run towards the navpoint and shoot things!" Even though some of those worlds were very annoying with the Mako physics and finding minerals was tedious, there was something very awesome in the fact that hey, I am exploring an alien world. This is kind of the keystone of futuristic science fiction, and it's not being interrupted by this great big epic story that I've been swept into here.

It sounds crazy, I admit. But having that freedom was really something else. The ME universe has incredible potential, and I feel that the sequels played up the emotional and visual aspect while sacrificing on scale. The levels were too small, and the amusement park ride feel was not as fun as being able to run amok on those planets. They could sell me a game with just that, make your own privateer ship, etc.

I admit I'm kind of downplaying the great strengths of ME2 and 3. Both had some truly awe-inspiring moments. Story scenes and humor that were a blast. I've played all three extensively. But I have to give it to 1 here, for being the most unique experience, and the least constrained.

i just wanna state that even though mass effect 3 was my least favorite I'm no hater or basher and in fact think it still is a good game and better then most games out there. In my opinion it had some of the best DLC and with some DLC giving people what they wanted and asked for and was asking for when ME3 was released. I love the Citadel DLC and loved being able to actualy have my old squadmates at my side either in the DLC or the armax center and this was something people wanted in ME3 basically more depth in the list of squadmates not old squadmates making cameo appearances. I loved Ashes, Leviathian, Citadel,Omega, and extended cut ending DLC but if you look at the stories of the DLC you could see that for one pretty much all of the DLC shouldve been already been included and part of the game when it was released and if it was ME3 would've been in better position then it was then and even now and even more like the game people wanted in the first place. What I said includes the ending to because yes some people hated the ending but there was people who only hated it because there was to many things unanswered and they felt the ending wasn't complete but with the extended cut ending you got the answers and could understand everything you saw so it felt complete and people thought it was good ending and wondered why the original ending wasn't like this from the start. So the only backlash would be from people who wanted a different ending and felt like there shouldve been more endings/outcomes. Also mass effect 3 has the best UI and gameplay out of the 3 as it should and it does have the best visuals too as it should also since its the newest and i did love the idea of having a coop nultiplayer even though i didnt like everything about it it has come a long with all the patches and the DLC its beome perfect and I hope they continue to support it with new updates and DLC. It was the right move to go with a coop multplayer since it still is an action RPG and not a straight shooter like a COD so coop fits perfect and if it was a competitive multiplayer like COD it wouldve been bad for mass effect and its fans since it still an RPG at the end of the day. Now with it doing well in its coop multiplayer I'm sure we will see a coop mode for single player in a mass effect game in the future which would be awesome and I think a good fit for an Action RPG game.

Now on another note I only judged ME3 the way that i did because i was disappointed with the lack of the simple stuff gone or missing that you normally see in an action RPG games and saw in ME1 and 2 and that i know couldve and wouldve fit in with this new interface and game period. A lot of whats missing it already had in ME1 and remember ME1 was RPG game of the year for 2007 which im not 100 percent sure but i think it was the only one to do so out of all 3 games and it had some good competition that year so it didnt get it for nothing and it is reason mass effect series has so many fans so you know it did something right not wrong. So now what I'm talking about is not the visuals or UI/gameplay because those always change and usually and hopefully for the better in most games but is for example stuff like the lack of an inventory in game, buying and selling your weapons and equipment to vendors, they took away the typical looting and inventory system that you normally have in RPGs where you can look and find weapons, armor, and equipment but can only carry so much based on what the carryweight limit is and you could access your inventory anytime and change into your armor, weapons, and accessories whenever, also you had more control and customization of yourself and your squadmates and what I mean is that you could not only pick and choose your own armor, weapons, and accessories which btw you could then even pick what omni or biotic amp you wanted to use but not anymore and you could do all of that with your squadmates too and because of this they even had armor and other stuff that only fitted and could be used by krogans, turians, salarians, and etc for example which I thought was very kool because it made sense and they did bring back the option to upgrade and add accessories to your weapons in ME3 but its still not the same or as in depth and they left out the part where you you could add upgrades to your armor too but whats strange is that they didnt bring that back only for the campaign mode but for multiplayer they did which i didn't understand at first why not include this for single player too since thats where it started but when I played multiplayer I kinda saw why and how it was needed for multiplayer but still didn't see why they couldn't have included it in the campaign side too.

There are other things like the fact that you could actually explore the planets that you scanned and either explore them on foot or by vehicle since some planets had hazardous atmospheres sometimes you couldn't be exposed on foot for too long and had to get back in your vehicle. The planets were basically open world and beautiful to the point that you could see animals in some planets or even face thresher maws which was kool. Plus one major change was how much more dialogue it had and how choices you made mattered more and the outcomes could be so different unlike now where most of the time no matter what you choose the outcome is the same but just happens differently and what i mean by this was that lets say you choose something and the outcome is death even if you were to chose the other choice in that dialogue death will still be the outcome except just in a different fashion or way but its still the same outcome unlike for example in mass effect 2 ending there were two outcomes and so many ways to reach those 2 outcomes which were basically living or dying but how you reached them and who else lives or dies could be diferent and thats why it was such a great ending and in my opinion the best ending of the three games even though mass effect 1 was very close to being my number 1 ending but 2 takes it by a little. Now another example is how if you didnt talk enough to people or find certain people you could miss out on side missions and other things that gave you rewards like getting a particular weapon license which was another simple but kool thing that mass effect had then but was taken out in the current mass effect games and licenses were needed to access better brands of weapons, armor, and accessories.

Another thing that was new to ME2 and i thought was great and fit well with role playing games was the loyalty missions because it was a way to learn about your squadmates and build a bond with them and in the end you either get a loyal squadmate and friend or a disloyal squadmate and possible problem or enemy which depending on what you did and got it could and would effect some of the choices you will have to make later on in the story and to me that was awesome and was one example of what role playing games are about and one reason why people love RPGs another is the open worlds in RPGs and thats how mass effect started but slowly lost it. This started to happen with mass effect 2 and by the time ME3 came you saw how linear it had become with only hints of what it once was.

The story and characters in the mass effect universe is why people love mass effect and Its one of the things that makes an RPGs so good and the biggest reason i love the mass effect series and I believe at least that it will never lose but its not all i loved about it and I hope and I'm more then sure whatever mass effect we get next will be the best one so far because they got through 3 games already and know what people loved and hated so I believe people always learn from their experiences and that's one thing bioware has plenty of experience with making games never mind how many RPGs they have made. Now some people might think the things I mentioned aren't important or even stupid but sometimes the simple things matter just as much as the big things to some people and in the end its just my opinion and everyone has a right to one so its all good and thanks to everyone who has posted its good to get a different take from people on what they thought and hopefully all the feedback is helpful.

But is it only barely playable in direct comparison to later games or was it that way from the start? I'm going to assume it wasn't because had it been, there would have been no 2 or 3 for you. And if it was that way from the start, was it played out of sequence (as in you played it after or among the others instead of when it came out)?

I get where you're coming from because the snob in me looks at the graphics now and they look like Loderunner. I can't imagine what I was on that they ever looked good enough to get immersed in, especially compared to what came next, and the ability to customize my FemShep's appearance and whatnot. But I did play it, and I did consider it, next to TES, as the 2nd most treasured series I'd ever gotten involved in, and second again only to TES in terms of games whose sequels I absolutely had to have on launch day.

TES is my favorite series ever and of all the games my favorite will always be Arena. This despite my laughing uncontrollably at the screenshots on wiki now and not even having the ambition to learn DOSBox to play it again.

As I said earlier though, as it is with Arena, so it is with ME1. Can I play it now? Not really. Not without knowing at all times that I'm playing it to prove I can, given how much better games (and ME games) have gotten graphically and mechanically since. It's okay. It's not an all or nothing proposition, where you must agree that the one you consider your fave is the one you are willing to be stuck with forevermore.  ;)
