Firstly, I'm only up to Lothering as far as story goes, so please don't spoil anything!

I'm playing on Hard mode, and it seems most guides recommend two Mages (one for damage/CC one for healing). That's quite boring considering that means my party is already set as a rogue; Morrigan, Wynne and Alistair. :S I was wondering if its viable to ditch Morrigan for another warrior or rogue? It seems the player is locked in different party configs, otherwise.

It is viable to leave them all at camp and go solo on nightmare.

It's fun having only one mage. It leaves you with more options on picking your party. Wynne is a powerful healer and having her makes things easier. When I go with Morrigan I give her the heal spell at <75 percent. Works great for me. I change her tactics so winter grasp at <50 percent, I think I forget what I do.(edit I think it's winter grasp at <75 percent)

You can have many different line ups so yes it's viable!

I only ever have more than one mage when I'm a mage myself. One does just fine.

Two (or even 3) mages is "best" because mages are somewhat better than rogues and warriors in this game. But going with 1 (or 0) is totally fine.

As an aside, how do you have Wynne if you're at Lothering?

I don't have her. Accidently spoiled that she's the healer and where to get her. Since she's apparently the only healer in the game, it means she has to tag along with every party...unless you play a healer yourself, ofcourse.

Also asking because this game seems pretty tough to me. I've gotten better at it for sure (rerolled warrior and turns out I am much more adept at playing the tank...), but I'm still getting the feeling it'll be a rough ride.

I mean yeah you can solo the game on Nightmare, but, I can't imagine that being much fun, probably more like frustrating... Which is why im wondering if having just wynne as a mage will be good or not.

The Arcane Warrior is so powerful that the rest of the gang makes little to no difference,
you can in total have 3 AW, namely yourself, morrigan, and wynne,
and all of them could be spirit healers, tho i think that would be a shame when all can also be blood mages, or simply invulnerable warriors

You don't need a dedicated healer or tank - the adage "the best defence is a good offence" holds true in DA:O. A few CC spells on a dps orientated mage will work just fine. Generally speaking killing everything quickly works out better than long protracted fights because you have too much of an emphasis on tanking/healing in your party.

There isn't really such thing as a dedicated healer. Morrigan you get at level 7 or so, which means that while she starts off with mainly offensive spells, you can still easily give her healing ones, or give her spirit healer as her second specialization. Similarly Wynne starts off with support spells but you can build her into an offensive mage if you so choose (as an aside, doing her personal quest lets her get a big spellpower boost, which actually makes her the most devastating offensive mage in the game - including a PC mage - if you want to take that route)

The game is quite tough at low levels. If you build your characters well then you'll probably find it gets easier as you go on. Though that depends on the order of quests, you do, as some are designed for higher level characters than others.

Soloing isn't really tedious. In fact my solo playthrough times are about the same as my group playthroughs ("about" due to variation, not say they're all 10% longer or something). But it does force you to go about fights in quite a different way to as a group.
