Title  - xbox drive door keeps popping oen. Have to go through ten minutes on closing the drive, watching it open, closing the drive, until it finally takes. It is getting worse.

I have original xbox.  Can buy a refurb for $129.00, at Gamestop.
Or I can buy a refurb xbox S system, at GameStop for $229.00

Or wait until the XBOX ONE comes out.

I have not pre-ordered the XBOX ONE, as I have not decided whether or not I will get that or the PS4.

I'm thinking that if I need to have a refurb system, for an indefinite period, it probably should be teh 'S'; and then try to sell or trade it in when I decide between the ONE or the PS4.

Any advice?

ship it back to Microsoft after 3 months when warranty runs out call to extend that warranty for another year...X1 will not be backwards compatible so...... what kind of warranty are you getting with gamestop

I'm in sort of the same situation. I guess try to consider if there are any games still coming out on 360 that you would want to play, or games that you already have and still want to play, as they have said that 360 games are not compatible with the xbox one. Who knows though, they may backtrack on that statement as well.

My drive stays shut until I jack it open. Hoping it doesn't close forever until dark souls 2 comes out or the mass effect servers go offline.

Imo, Unless you like to be the first to "plug it in", buy a refurb or a used console! :-)

If it comes with warranty anyway, why pay the extra money for a new one.

I bought a refurbished model for one of my kids some years ago (the old model 60 gb white 2nd gen version with hdmi) and it works perfectly to this day (and cost me half the price of a new one). :-)

I have a lot of games for the x360 that I haven't actually played yet. Guess I will Secure a working 360 in my home now that the Xbox One is not backwards compatible anyway.

It is your decision depending on a couple of factors, really. I'd personally get the 'S' in your case (and I'll probably get the One when it comes out "officially" next year in Hungary), but luckily my Xbox has been working almost perfectly since 2008 (knock knock).

I only had the RROD once (in 2011 I think), but restarting the console solved it, and I didn't see it since then. That's space magic for you.:wizard:

Personally get an S. I would also suggest if you don't have one already, get a hard drive transfer cord. My Gears 3 360 went kaput on me several weeks back, would have had a new one by now if my brother in law didn't spend 600 bucks on tools just to tell me it's the ****ing power brick. My sister would have saved 400 bucks on just getting me a 4GB version. Anyway, griping aside, get either a 250 GB or a refurbished special edition one if just for the bigger hard drive so you don't have to buy separately.

My Xbox is worse and I am waiting it out, mostly because cheap and broke lol. I plan to eventually get both PS4 and Xbox One.

I'm always getting the E 74 red ring on my xbox and...I have to beat it with my controller to get it to read discs. Yeah I know I probably shouldn't do that. But hey, I paid $50 for the thing its not gonna run perfectly xD

I dunno, you could just wait till the new Xbox comes out and hope all the old games are cheap for download, then you could sell your discs to pay for the downloads..
Though, if you're a collector like me, maybe you should just buy a new one. Though it sounds like a waste, since the new one is coming and in 2 years the new ME will be out, you'll have to shelve out for a Xbox1 then anyway.

I can confirm the Xbox 360 S is a great console that lasts.

No great loss, the XB360 is a terrible console anyway, I suggest upgrading to a Wii U.

The original white 360s were kinda crappy (we had two of them RRoD).

We have two of the black 250GB slims now, and both are more or less bulletproof. We've had them for a couple of years now, with absolutely no issues.

I would recommend getting one, definitely. Used or new is up to you, OP.

Edit: the 360 library is pretty massive. You wouldn't have any trouble finding stuff to play.

Get it fixed.

I have an x360 elite, my disk drive and laser had to be replaced, I spent £60 on it, it was far cheaper than getting an entirely new one, which isn't worth it frankly with the new consoles just round the corner, if you go for a console and not a PC that is.

As I have a 40GB and 120GB HD it wasn't worth getting a slim for me, as I'd have to buy a HD transfer pack :/ which is expensive.

Well, I'd suggest checking which of your original Xbox games are playable on the 360. If most or all are playable, then I'd upgrade to a new S 360. (Though with the One's release right around the corner if you wait you'll likely be able to pick it up for even cheaper than you can now).

Have you considered trying to fix the door? Press something heavy against it when you want it to stay closed?

I recently traded in my defective PS3 for a new super slim PS3 at Gamestop. 80 bucks for it, defective and all.

That is a good idea. I'll give gamestop a call.

Good to hear - was going to suggest upgrading to a refurb slim - just so much quieter and nicer to use than any of the previous versions.

Look forward to playing some games with you on your new console:wizard:

So Shepntali had an awesome idea, which got me out of this jam cheaper than I thought.
Gamestop has a double your trade-in value thing going on right now.

I told the salesperson that my xbox elite has a drive door that will not stay closed.
Salesperson looks up the trade-in value and tells me that it is worth $140.00 ( a bit less for the DVD tray issue).

I bought a used xbox slim, 250GB (which is nice the elite only has 120GB) for $229 + $34. sales tax = $263. '
I will get about $130 - $140 on the trade-in (assuming closer to $130) in store credit, so effectively my cost is $123.00. Plus the very nice sales associate threw in a $15 GS membership for free.

I don't think I could do much better than that, unless someone planned on giving me one!

So thanks for all the advice, and recommendations!

Special thanks to ShepnTali for the excellent tip on Gamestop.

Wait, it was an Elite model 360 you were talking about? When you said you had an original Xbox, I thought you meant the original Xbox system, not an original design 360 model.

Sorry for any confusion.  I don't think the first Xbox would even play ME.

This is an Xbox elite.  It served me faithfully until now.

The largest PITA will BW to transfer licenses and redownload content. DRM is such a drag.
Hopefully, this is the last time that will be necessary.  3rd time is the charm, right?^_^

@ the EliteElite: If a corporation changes the product more than once before it is released, that is generally a bad sign. It implies that they are... out-of-touch with their demographic or have a... hidden agenda...perhaps somewhat incompetent? Just one man's opinion.

All I keep saying to myself each time I hear another hilarious misstep by Micro$oft is: "I have a BAD feeling about this..."
