That's an interesting hire for sure.
He'll be in the place of Preston Watamaniuk, who was lead designer for the last three games and now is working on the new IP.

Wasn't Christina Norman lead designer for ME2? Or was Lead Gameplay Designer a sperate position?

What does a Lead Designer do? Amalur was pretty good from what I remember and, oddly enough, I just started playing Soulstorm again a few days ago and it's terrific.

Christina Norman was a ****ing goddess of gameplay. Too bad she was gone.

Funny, I remember when she was called the "Destroyer of Mass Effect" because she was promoted and the game had an overhaul to the inventory and became more of a shooter.

What I heard of Amalur was that is had some great ideas, but tried to do too many and didn't do all of them well. How much of that was lead versus implementation is hard to say, but it certainly isn't an immediate bad sign. I'm inclined to continue to give benefit of a doubt.
Also worth noting what this announcement implies about their progress on the game. Presuming this is a recent deal, that means they've finally gotten to high-level design, or at least to a point where they need a high-level designer which suggests they've gone through a good amount of conception already, and are starting to look at nailing down more specifics. Looks like we're on track to start hearing about it post-DA:I/early next year.

I would point out Lead Designer is influenced by such things, but it's not like he had much say in the matter. If he's told to ship by a date, he has to be done by then, regardless of if he thinks it's ready. That's not a sign he rushed it, that's a sign he worked on a rushed game. You can hardly hold that against him.HellbirdIV wrote...

This is a very, very bad sign.
I'm not actually going to hate on it until I see some real production work, but consider this:
Mass Effect 3 floundered largely due to being rushed through development with hasty rewrites.
Bioware's The Old Republic had its launch botched by being pushed out as soon as possible by crazy people in EA marketing who thought it could compete with Cataclysm.
Soulstorm was shoved out the door early and is so widely regarded as a horrendous piece of crap that Relic made Soulstorm into an in-joke in Dawn of War II.
I'm seeing two bad things come together, is all I'm saying.
ME1 was the best while being the least epic. I always enjoyed the drama in these games, and while some intense grand scale action can be thrilling from time to time, the next game doesn't have to be epic for me.PnXMarcin1PL wrote...
Let's hope next Mass Effect will be more epic than ME1 (which was best of series imo)
