Movies that absolutely terrified you as a kid?

I'm huge fan of horror and all it's subgenres - slasher/ghost etc - but very few movies have genuinely terrified me. Pretty much anything involving ghosts done well can frighten me while watching but only one has been able to terrify me, The Amityville Horror (original).

It wasn't all that scary a movie but throw in the 'true' story, the book and the sequel which really freaked me out and you have a childhood trauma. Was obsessed by it as a kid, reading everything from court reports and books to watching everything connected to the case - including the real crime scene photos.

So essentially never mention the remake or Amityville to me as I will talk for hours. Throw in my take on what really happened - murders and the so called 'haunting' - and you'll never get rid of me :)

Also the Blair Witch Project as I got a copy of it on vhs pre-release (pirate copy of the cut that played in US colleges with alternate footage in places). At the time whether it was real or not was up for debate and it scared me witless. I also gave copy to a college mate who hates horror and at 19 he had to call his dad at work faking a migraine, to get him to come home with medication as he was so terrified to be alone. That may explain why he refused to watch any movie I recommended afterwards, despite his love of film and direction I could never get him to watch even a tame Argento movie.

I was always really scared of the face huggers in Aliens. Not so much the xenomorphs, just the face huggers, lol.

Me too, though that was more a product of the original Alien rather than the sequel - I got really fixated on the idea of death via an alien bursting out of my chest. I even checked for the facehuggers under my bed for a period of time!

(Which, looking back, is obviously pretty stupid - I'm pretty sure that I was old enough to understand that they weren't real, and that even if they were, they wouldn't just suddenly turn up on earth, much less camp out under some random kid's bed. I guess that was a combination of (a) how horrific the prospect of dying like that was and (B) my generally obsessive nature that I did it anyway.)

I also remember being scared by Poltergeist, though I don't remember much about the movie itself. And if TV counts, I know I had more than one nightmare that was probably inspired by "Killer BOB" on Twin Peaks, and the classic Doctor Who serial "The Seeds of Doom" really freaked me out when I was only 5 or 6 years old.

Yeah, that one is much better and a lot less perverted than the other one.

Thinking about it more I think the movies that terrified me where more to do with fire. I was terrified as kid and in primary school I got day off they had fire alarm practise because I used to completely freak. On the plus side my classmates always knew when it was coming :) I blame the terrible Canadian disaster movie 'City on Fire' for it, though oddly my favourite film i've seen hundreds of times since I was a kid - and still watch 25+ years later on blu-ray - is

Alien, when I was around 12. I didn´t even need to watch it, after impatiently waiting all that week for the SF movie, I saw I picture of the monster head and jaws in a magazine. Didn´t dare to watch the movie until about 4 years later, when it was aired in the afternoon.

Ironic that Aliens DC is my 2nd favourite movie ever.

Parts of Alien, Child's Play, and even Robocop scared the hell out of me when i was a kid. More recently though was The Second Renaissance in The Animatrix like the OP mentioned. That part of the film was just too disturbing to sit through at times.

Haha, Child's Play. After my friend watched that as a kid, his dad would prop up a doll against the bathroom door so it fell in when my friend opened it. Lifetime of mental scars.

The Ring.

I watched the DVD on my computer,  with a 27" TV sitting 3 feet behind me (Didn't have a DVD player for the TV yet).  That freaked me out.

It was an old made for TV movie from 1977 called "Snowbeast". Being only 10 years old at the time, I hadn't watched too many scary movies.

Never had a problem with scary films as a kid; loved 'em! Mom would read me ghost stories at bedtime, and this adoration continues now. Scary; not gory. The latter does little for me, and it seems to waste a lot of ketchup.

However, The Twilight Zone series did grant me a couple of nightmares, esp the episode of miniature aliens torturing Agnes Moorehead in her home. Great stuff!

"Dead things float"! First half was terrific; second half not so much.
