I hope we are done with returning characters as companions. (Spoilers I suppose)

P.S. i take back everything I wrote above if the returning character is Sigrun.

It's hard to remember that with returning characters we won't just pick up where we left off. We're not the same protagonist and thus they don't know the new us like the old us. While Sigrun (as an example) would be great to have around again, part of me wonders how she'd even react to the Inquisitor, the Inquisition, or anything. Hard to say.

I thought Cullen was going to be a companion? No? Well, I was lied to.

I dont mind cameos from previous companions, where they make sense. For example, if DAI involves world wide chaos then it makes sense for King Alistair (or Queen Anora) to make a brief appearance. Leliana's appearance, given her Orlesian background and relationship with the Devine makes sense. Of course we know Bodhan and Sandal were going to Orlais, so chances are we will see them too. Other previous companions, such as Oghren, Merrill, Zevran or Fenris, may have less of a reason to be included, although I am sure a case could be made.

Honestly, I couldn't care less if the other Dragon Age companions don't even have a cameo. IMO, the Dragon Age series has been really bad at creating characters for me to care about. Give me a fresh start, and give me good characters with depth and a reason to care about them.
you make a good point about wanting characters with depth and a reason to care about them.

I'm fine with returning characters like Merrill, Isabela or Cassandra being companions. I'm uncertain about previous companions like Varric or Anders being companions again. I'll wait and see of course, but I'm slightly uneasy about having one of Hawke's staple companions return as one in Inquisition.
What exactly diffrentiates Merill and Isabela from Varric and Anders? Merill and Isabela were also companions in DA 2...

I do want to see past companions make some kind of appearance in some way at least. It's nice to see how past companions have changed and what they're currently up to.

I don't want to see the return of any of the DA2 characters I romanced because presumably they're still with Hawke. I definitely don't want to see Hawke, or even the Warden. The same goes double for Origins romances. I'd like a fresh slate to develop a whole new set of preferences.

Isabela was only an NPC in origins and Merrill was only a party member breifly in the Dalish origin before returning as a companion in the next game. Anders, on the other hand, was a full companion for the warden in Awakening and again for Hawke, while Varric was a full companion for Hawke and will seemingly be one for the Inquisitor as well.
I don't want either of them to be companions in Inquisition, I was only saying that their situation in Dragon Age 2 as NPC's in the previous game returning as companions is fine but characters like Anders or Varric who are being full companions twice I'm not so sure about.

While I will agree that I want mostly new characters, I think that returning characters are vital to the Dragon Age Universe, especially if Bioware is pitching how everything is connected to one another and that the causes your Warden or Hawke decided to do effect Thedas.
There's also something cool about seeing a returning character and know their back story, seeing where they are today, and knowing that your PC has no idea about the pain or suffering some of these characters have gone through. It makes you feel more involved in the world and makes you realize that Thedas really is a "small world". (much like real life)

You had Oghren in DA:O and DA:A. Then Anders in DA:A and DA2. And now Varric for DA2 and DA:I.

Seeing if anyone read the books you learn that Morrigan's Sister tells Alistair that the Dragons can be forced to awake with the Theirin Bloodline. Or with Dragon blood, but since King Calenhad Theirin they had partial dragon blood in their line. Soooo.. ._. right now per speculation, I just will pray to the maker that Cullen will be a love interest and will be in DA:I

But again, expansion and DLC companions kind of get a pass considering they weren't with us for too long.
