I hope we are done with returning characters as companions. (Spoilers I suppose)

Hey, sis, the bratty female rogue is Sera, an elf. But both she and the Tevinter magister, Dorian, are from a survey that has been debunked as being out of date, so their current status is unknown. It wouldn't surprise me if either both are in, but it isn't certain. I'm not crazy about the idea, since "bratty" is a major turn-off for me, but that's the way it goes.

Sorry, fixed it in an edit.

If the female rogue is 'bratty' she can stay in camp with Vivienne in her clown outfit, while I sharpen the murder knife.

I want new companions. And only the new ones. I do not like dragging the old characters from the game in the game. I'm against the return of previous characters. In a cameo, yes - but not as a companion.

Who would I like to see in the cameo? Zevran, of course.  I want to see his new face and find out what he has achieved victories over the House of the Crows.

I'm not keen on varric being a companion again. But whatever. Cassandra was never a companion before, so she's new on that front - but not a new character. This "Vivienne" is new too. Cullen does not interest me in the least and he is not a new face. I hope Bioware gives us some newer males and doesn't screw over the girl gamer crowd with limited/crappy male LI choices like they did in the ME series. (Do you want Kaidan, ugly alien 1, ugly alien 2, or maybe Kaidan again maybe?)

Oh come on Garrus was a verry handsome alien :P, If you have a problem with aliens maybe you should just go join Cerberus or somethin.

I think it's important to have links to the previous games and I would never say I don't want returning characters because I can imagine getting Shale back or Ogren.

Were the returning characters in DA2 any worse than the new ones? Sure Anders was annoying as hell and Merrill was just kinda dull I suppose but Isabela was one of the best characters.

Aveline seemed like she could have been a much better character if allot more work had gone into her, It seemed like there was grate potential for a close friendship with a well behaved Hawke but it never seemed to quite get there.

Carver was just someone I wanted to kill ASAP and Bethany was pretty good but there wasn't much to her or Carver because they weren't in most of the game.

Vael was dull :/

Oh and Fenris despite romancing him I still found him irritating most of the time and a total hypocrite he was under developed too he never grew as a character in any way.

Varric is rightly considered the best character (and the only worthwhile new character in my opinion) it's not even about him as a character it's just the fact that he is nice and not too judgmental. He isn't some stick in the mud and he wasn't completely under developed so if anyone is coming back it should be him.

I am interested to find out what his motives are though, he joined hawke because of a business arrangement and stayed because of friendship but he was never the save the world type. So what has changed? It may have been covered in comics and books that I aint read.

Cassandra has hardly been in DA at all so she is basically new and she seems like she could be really interesting.

Oh and I would be happy for Cullen to be a companion. For one thing he is a pleasant Templar but I can totally imagine (based on how he turned on Meredith) him getting tired of all the hardliner kill all the mages types. he has grown and learnt that not all mages are bad whilst still believing in the circle. It's a good point of view to have in the inquisition and a good character to have it. weather or not he clashes a bit with Vivienne and the other (probably less pro cirlce) mage we will most likely have as a companion.

If it isn't Cullen I hope we do get a character like that.

So yeah it's not about returning vs new it's about good characters that have good reasons to be in the game.

p.s I was slagging off the DA2 characters a bit they really weren't all that bad there were good elements to all of them (even Anders i guess) I just don't see how the new characters were better. The same goes for awakening tbh Ogren ruled in that DLC.

Cassandra is acceptable because she was never was a companion in the first place.
I will mind if we receive Cullen because i know Bioware will only put him in the game, cause screaming fangirls can't shut the **** up. If we play new protagonist, then we should also receive new companions. I don't mind if 1 or 2 people from previous games return as companions but that's it. Anything else should be reduced to cameos or side characters.

Also didn't Bioware said Inquisitor's companions are suppost to be people who are not just soldiers but can also contribute a lot more then just their fighing skills?

Cassandra is leader of Seekers and has full army supporting her, i can totaly see why she is part of Inquisition considering DA2 events.

Vivienne is basically similiar to Cassandra, the fact she was about to become First Enchanter strongly indicates she is either powerful mage or great leader or both. No doubt she will have influence on other mages.

Varric is different. He knows people and stuff, has connections all over the world and is also part of the Dwarven Merchant Guild.

Cullen a Knight - Captian who keeps geting into trouble, has to rely on Hawke to do everything for him and he can't even control his men. No thanks my Inquisitor doesn't need him.

Nobody could control his men or the mages or anything really, Hawke caused just as many problems as he/she solved so I don't think you can claime Hawke that much of a fixer.

Cullen also never agreed with meridiths insane crap. he was a reasonable sensible Templar who looked at things fairly but still took the dangers of magic and blood magic verry seriously.

he would have made a much better leader than Meredith and who knows maybe he is a night commander now, Maybe he has influence with the templars or at least a certain gruop of them.

You are right but again i still don't see how he could become a companion, especially if he actually was promoted to knight commander since his job would be, to stay in Kirkwall and prevent any other disasters from happening.

But Cullen was not any of thos things by the end of Origins. In my game The Warden saved the mages and Cullen had a hissy fit then the Knigt Commander would not kill all the mages. Then in DA2 he is all level headed and what not. He is 100% fan service and it would not work at all as a companion. Let him be a cameo.

Cullen makes just as much sense as anyone else (imo). Like Hawke and/or Varric he was there when "it all began" between the mages and the Templars, he could contribute some useful information on the conflict, and the Templars. Not to mention that if the theory that some people have had about the "big bad" in DA:I having had an influence on the events of Origins, then the fact Cullen was at the circle tower in Ferelden during those events would be even more reason for Cullen to have a role in Inquisition.

The good thing about Cullen, (apart from the huge fanbase and potential Hepler infuence), is he could be swayed from moderation to extremism/extremism to moderation in his views on mages, like how Alistair and Leliana could be hardened in DAO.

But the templars have dispanded from the chantry, The mages are rebelling and that job might not exist anymore as there may not even be a circle in kirkwall. I'm not saying I definately want him as a companion but he could easily join the inquisition with the goal of reforming the templar order. Maybe he leads a rogue group of templars or something who dissagree with the rest of the templars.

So, who do you like? The same could be said about them, whoever they are.

Unless you've seen the script, you don't know what will or won't work as a companion. Would Cassandra be a companion if the "fanboys" weren't screaming for it? Yes, you say? Why, because she's got something to do with the story going forward? You might very well be right. Maybe people who don't see it that way just have trouble imagining how she might fit into the plot of the game. Cullen is no different. Yes, some fans like him, just as some fans like Cassandra, or Leliana, or any other character we've seen before. If Cullen is in the game, it will be because he has something to do with the plot going forward, even if some people have difficulty imagining that.

I know I for one would have been dissapointed if cassandra wasn't a companion. There is allot of fan love for her maybe not as much as cullen but still allot. Plus there is a difference between fan service and bringing back characters that fans like.

Because when it's a character you like, it's bringing back a character people like. When it's one you hate, it's fan service. ;)

I don't think mikeymoonshine was disagreeing with that, though.

Edit: sorry, got the name wrong first try

I don't even know why I like Cullen tbh. I pretty much always play a bloodmage on my first play through who would happily kill all templars (even the nice ones).

But then my secondery character is usually a pro templar pro chantry do gooder warrior to directly contrast the other character. So that character would probably get along with Cullen allot better.

He's just a good character. I am 100% pro-mage, but I've always loved his character. He's well-written, and as an avid reader and aspiring writer myself xD I can appreciate that 100 fold.

I don't even much care when they bring back characters I like. So far I've liked the whole cast of DAO and DA2. Some are less memorable than others, like Merril and the Lyrium Elf I can't even be bothered to recall the name of. But some like Alistair and Morrigan are among my favorite in the medium.

Still didn't care for Alistair's cameo in DA2. Would hate to see him as a companion again, he's a Fereldan king, let him be that. And the only reason I'm not similarly displeased by Morrigan showing up in DA:I is they clearly were foreshadowing this return back in DAO.

Since Varric, Cassandra and Vivienne are locked in and DA seems to have a male and a female from each class, it looks like a sword and board male warrior (Cass is wielding 2-handed in the released stills), a dual wielding female rogue (oh, please, not Isabela again - I love her to bits but her story's told) and a male mage are going to be joining us.

To speculate a bit, Cullen would fit the bill for the warrior if they don't go for a Qunari. Has anyone seen Qunari fight weapon and shield? There was some discussion about a bratty female dwarf rogue whose name begins with an S. It wasn't Sigrun but she would also fill that role. Maybe her exploration into the deep roads took her really far west.... I also remember the same article mentioning a male mage from Tevinter. I think he's probably going to be an elf because they do tend to include a token elf and a token dwarf in the party. I don't know anything about Vivienne so I won't stick my neck out on either of the mages' specialties but I think one of them will be a healer.

Edit - Oops - forgot about Sera being an elf.  The male mage could be human.  I do know that the survey was debunked but my original argument for the male and female of each class and a dwarf and an elf is still there.  That kind of limits who can return.

We could potentially get that Grey Warden or Cullen as the male sword/shield Warrior. Dorian as the male mage. The Iron Bull or Sera as the dual wielding rogue or maybe even Cole.

Or we could have more than six characters. DAO had 7 regular full-time companions + 1 DLC + 1 post-Landsmeet character. DA2 had 6 regular full-time companions + 1 DLC + 2 Act-1-plus characters, so that's nine. Shh. If you squint, it's nine.

From the information that's been released Cullen would be an excellent addition to the cast. We have Varic, a dwarf who associates more with himself and Hawke then with Orzammar. Then we have Cassandra, who was an important part of the Seekers. And Vivienne, a Pro-Circle Mage. Each companion seems to be breaking off from their respective groups to come towards the Inquisition.

Why wouldn't it make sense for a Templar to join? Cullen has been shown in TWO games to not agree with the Chantry and to have serious reservations about the Circles. With the power structures crumbling and his canon wariness of it all why wouldn't he make a good companion?

He makes a lot more sense then Varric, that's for sure.
