I hope we are done with returning characters as companions. (Spoilers I suppose)

He's also male, which for me, is another reason to dislike him because don't we have enough stock "hot, interesting men with some form of tragic past" running around already? Especially when fandom likes to focus on these men and completely forget that there are more than two female characters worth noticing.

And there is is. Privilege.

If it makes you feel any better, I can almost see your point. I tired of the endless Morrigan and Leliana love-fests months ago, but that didn't stop anybody from creating another 7K love threads. And now, the guys are squeeing over Cassandra and Vivienne, and I'm fervently hoping that I don't burn out on them too much to enjoy them in game. I'm already sick of Vivienne, but I'm trying to maintain enthusiasm for Cassandra. And then there's that female elf we saw today in the GI article. I'm sure she'll get her share of squee, too.

So, why all the hate for one guy? At the moment, he and Varric are the only males we've heard anything about at all!

Maybe you don't like Cullen. Fine. Nobody says you have to like every character in the game. If you want to get technical, we don't even know that Cullen is a companion, or in the game at all! It is possible, but it hasn't been confirmed. But like it or not, the party will not be composed exclusively of curvaceous female companions. Some of them - about half, give or take - will be male, and people are going to want to talk about them.

Privelege of... what, precisely?

And, being that I don't spend a lot of time on the BSN, I completely missed these love threads for Leliana and Morrigan. Which is really unfortunate (for me, at least), because I would have been about as happy as a pig in mud. Where I do spend my time I mostly see love for the male characters (even when I block it), which is why I am thoroughly burnt out on them and the idea of them returning in DA3 fills me with "oh God no" because then there will be even more hype and love for the guys in my most frequented spaces.

I actually don't like the idea of Varric being back either. He was probably the most bland character (imo) in the party. At least Fenris and Anders inspired an intense dislike in me but Varric was just "that one guy everybody talks about because he has apparently marvelous chest hair and is capable of snark".

ach im no bothered one way or the other,if i find the character annoying/boring etc i just relegate them to there place of holding for the rest of the game, bioware normally pretty good at letting you just ditch comps if u dont like them

I agree with about Varric.

What's your opinion of Cassandra?

I can understand new characters, but I would rather more characters return as well. Not everyone in Thedas is a super hard-ass. By this point, the available cast of characters is large enough to support the protagonist. Inventing too many new seemingly random characters to fill the unstoppable-warrior-companion role would harm the credibility of any potential threat in Thedas.

Wouldn't having the same 5-6 people saving the day everywhere in Thedas harm the credibility as to how Thedas still hasn't spontaneously combusted?

No.

Those same characters will have already established themselves as highly skilled fighters. We KNOW that they can handle the fight.

From what I can see, a lot in this thread, even OP about Sigrun, are like ''please, all new companions but don't forget to include my favorite old one!!!''

I for one want Velanna, Sten and Merril back, nor would I mind other returning faces, I don't see why everyone is so adamant about not wanting old faces.

Edit: I also wouldn't mind seeing Ariane from Witch Hunt again

So how did they get by before these same characters existed?

If I were to summarize my position in one sentence, it would be "they crowd out new faces presenting new ideas and make the world seem smaller."

Before I watched Dawn of the Seeker, she was just "that angry woman who keeps interrupting my gameplay and has the same haircut as I do". Nobody really talked about her and I didn't really care about her one way or the other.

But Dawn of the Seeker put her in a new light for me and I really started to like her. She became more sympathetic and gained more depth and became less "just some random angry chick running the interrogation".

Speaking of Dawn of the Seeker, I actually wouldn't mind Galyan as a companion in DA3...

He's one of the few male characters that I haven't seen a lot of fuss over and that's refreshing.

Now I'm curious, how did she develop exactly? She didn't do anything but being angry the whole movie.

She was given more depth and a backstory rather than staying as just "that one Seeker person who yells at Varric", which was pretty much all I got out of her in DA2. Sure, she was still particularly angry in Dawn of the Seeker but it shows sort of why she's angry and it ceases to be her sole defining personality trait.

So we know that Verric and Cassandra will be returning as companions.  I truly hope that is it on returning characters and all our other companions are brand new characters.  I know people like seeing old faces but for me useing characters over and over just makes the world seem small.  Have plenty of cameos and whatnot.  But let our party be filled out with new people to get to know and love.

P.S.  i take back everything I wrote above if the returning character is Sigrun.

The name is Varric and Cassandra wasn't a companion, Hawke didn't even met her. So the starting point of this topic is pointless.

Unless they don't turn chara we loved into emo again I totally agree with bringing them back.

Okay, so you like that she was given background.

I'm note sure I got what you meant to say but the whole plot of DA2 is that Cassandra is looking for Hawke and since she never met him/her she asks Varric info about him/her. It's all a big flashback.
