The endings weren't bad, per se.

Really, there is nothing that needs understanding. Don't try to understand them because you'd be wasting your time, and defeating them doesn't come from understanding them.

Understanding them means understanding their capabillities, their motivations, and their methods. That's very important for defeating them (unless someone finds a Big Bad Reaper Killer hidden under a rock, at any rate). The more you understand them the better chance you have of being able to successfully predict their actions. For example, knowing that they'll try to stop and harvest a planet instead of just flattening everything is rather useful strategic information.

edit: Gah, totally messed up the quoting, hope it's right about who said what.

Who invented the term 'Reaper Code'? I don't remember this being in the game.

It's kind of a big deal during the Rannoch mission.

thing is you look to understand them, and thats when they've got you.  sometimes it really is best to nuke em from orbit just to be sure.

This is a question about the Catalysts function that has always bothered me. No doubt the Lazarus implants are made of materials currently in existence and in other objects. Many people may even have medical "implants" which may use technologies spun off from the Lazarus project, TIM isn't one to let Cerberus advances go to waste after all. Did all of the drop dead?
What about shipboard computers?  They're made of the same materials and use "intelligent" programming (I say intelligent because most VIs resemble weak AIs). Did those all get fried?  If so, how are there fleets still around as EC shows?
Why does the red beam destroy the Geth hardware and software, but not wipe VIs galaxy wide?

Sure. It only works if we assume that the ME universe actually is founded on, bluntly, mystical crap. Organic life isn't just a collection of chemical processes, and synthetic life isn't just a collection of electronc and software processes. There's some mystical level that makes life qualitatively different from nonlife.

OTOH, Bio started slinging that stuff at us in ME1, so it's not like this is anything new.

If it was just that simple I'd agree. Actually it turns out it is pretty much just that simple but that's beside the point.

You know, I had a new thought regarding the OP, but a quick look over the last few pages I believe I can sum up this thread in 3 words . . .

Rabble . . . rabble . . . rabble.

I know thats technically one word repeated three times but I can only hope people get the point.

Repetition of the same thing several times over?

Sounds fitting!

the fact that from what Vigil said, considering that "Control" isn't the way as he said that "Understanding" them isn't the way to go [something of this wording]. so obviously "Control" isn't the way to go. which conclude that Destroying them is the way to go

"Don't try to understand" is a message I would never accept from anyone. Vigil is a VI constructed from the personality of a Prothean, its opinions are not authoritative.

i would say that considering he is a Prothean, he has honestly has weight of his speech...specifically the "Don't try to Understand them", despite what others say....for the fact that when i saved The Collector base for Cerberus, sure they can do some research into The Collector Tech, but in the end "it" Destroyed / Ruined them in the process.

ME is certainly suggestive about that, but as I said, it's not a message I'm willing to accept. Understanding the Reapers' nature, their capabilties and their motivations doesn't make the necessity of ending the cycle any less pressing.

And should - theoretically - some piece of knowledge indeed change my perspective radically, then I'd question the validity of a perspective without that knowledge. The Lovecraftian "It's better to stay ignorant" is not a principle I'm willing to act on if I can avoid it in any way.

I wouldn't say Mass Effect is suggestive of that at all.

We're given a protagonist that continually asks such questions. If there really was an intended theme of 'They're giant monsters you need to kill," that wouldn't be the case at all.

In fact, if there was a theme of "Don't ask questions, just shoot," we wouldn't be fighting the Reapers in the first place.
