I'm worried after reading a couple recent developments and reviews of Mass Effect 2. Firstly, does anyone feel like this is becoming less of an RPG and more of a TPS? Bioware cut out a lot of armor, disabled the ability to customize squad armor, and lessened other RPG elements. I hate sorting through mounds of useless gear as much as the next guy, but having the option to have squadmates in full body armor couldn't hurt, could it? Also, experience for leveling is no longer from getting kills, we get them for finishing missions now. That isn't such a bad idea, but why not give us a small amount of experience for kills and then a bonus for completing a mission? Bioware is either trying to go down a different road of RPGs or trying to appease the TPS group a little too much. This is all an opinion and I acknowledge that you cant please everyone, but I played Mass Effect 1 for the RPG elements. With some of those elements removed, I feel kind of empty.

Good games are good. Doesn't matter what genre they fit in. If the game has a good story, and lets me play a role, then it is an RPG.

Also, from day one they have been saying this was a "shooter-RPG". Why are people surprised by this?

ME1 was always RPG lite anyhow, really. It is a shooter RPG and has been refined further in ME2. Maybe I'd like individual armor for my squad mates, but that's such a minor issue that I don't care. Garrus did look kind of dorky in Colossus X armor even though my FemShep looks snazzy in it, but I digress. If the story is great and expands on what was done in ME1, then I will be happy with it whatever genre you want to put it into. If you want a pure® RPG then that's what games like DA:O are for (which I also love). There's nothing wrong with hyrbridization if the end result is a great game.

Alot of people have stated a similar concern in worrying that ME2 is sacrificing it's RPG elements. But that opinion is based more on seeing the info that Bioware has made available to us - most of it being focused on the action based aspects of the game.

I'm sure that once we get to play the game, we'll see that ME2 is every bit the RPG that the first ME was - just different in some areas. Shooter RPG is how the game is described and I have no doubt that's how it'll play out.

Correct. Mass Effect was never a hardcore RPG.

How could you possibly feel "empty" when you've yet to play the game? I understand concerns people have, though I disagree with them, but I wish people would wait to play the game. Watching 10 minutes of the same gameplay footage is not enough to form any basis for concerns.

We have no idea how deep armour and weapon customization is, and it may just be me, but I like the idea of my squadmates wearing what they choose to wear. I'm not their mom, they can dress themselves. That to me puts me into character more than having to dress them because they apparently are incapable of doing so..

I guess it's all how an individual defines rpg. To me, an rpg is more about how I can change "my" character, and how my character can affect the storyline with different choices. And as long as I get exp from something to put into multiple abilities, I couldn't care less where it comes from.

As long as the story and dialogue remain top-notch, I dont care terribly much about most of the changes.

I'm concerned over the increased quality of the TPS part of the game however, as I can't shoot accurately using dual-sticks to save my life, and had the original on Xbox where accurate shooting wasn't that much of a big deal.

Nope.

Bioware cut out a lot of armor, disabled the ability to customize squad
armor, and lessened other RPG elements. I hate sorting through mounds
of useless gear as much as the next guy, but having the option to have
squadmates in full body armor couldn't hurt, could it?

We're not completely certain how this works, we've seen screenshots with Samara in armor.

Also, experience
for leveling is no longer from getting kills, we get them for finishing
missions now. That isn't such a bad idea, but why not give us a small
amount of experience for kills and then a bonus for completing a
mission?

Because people who usually forced combat recieved all the experience from the kills + the loot + the experience from the mission completion. This way, if you can persuade the person to stand down you've not completely gotten a huge loss of experience.

Bioware is either trying to go down a different road of RPGs
or trying to appease the TPS group a little too much.

Mass Effect was a shooter, they aren't completely revamping the entire game's foundation. The only thing was the shooting aspect of the game was horrible as was the squad commands and such, now they are improving the combat to mesh in more with the RPG elements.

This isn't dumbing down or appealing to the shooters, this is bioware fixing their game. If you played it for the RPG elements, you'll love the improved squad commands and tactical use of biotics / tech just the same.

THE most important part are the story and decisions for the player. If ME 2 is nearly as good there as ME 1, it doesn't matter if the gameplay is more RPG or FPS. What BioWare should never forget though is that there needs to be gameplay as well - as important as the story is, a game should always be more than an interactive movie.

Well, whether or not it feels like an RPG or shooter, I'm still going to play it, still going to love it, and still going to kick some Collector ass.
