So with the newest video featuring some of the combat, what are people's thoughts?

Personally, when it comes to the tactics they mentioned, it seemed more so tactics people would utilize in games like Dark Souls or Elderscrolls, etc. (i.e pulling the tower shield) And less so what people saw from games like the original Baldur's Gate. Maybe it's just because the developer was using the 360 controller, as opposed to the keyboard, but I didn't see any mixture between the first and the second game. And more so, just an improvement on the latter DA2 combat system.

It seems like they are making Dragon Age into the witcher. I dont want that.

Because they didn't show any group tactics. Because they weren't demonstrating a group.

Target prioritization and using character niches is a good part of what those tactics were all about. Whether it be dispelling protections so you could mace a guy in the face or just getting a defensive line so the rest could operate unhindered. Expanding the Dragon Age combos seems very interesting to help with that.

The Witcher is one of my favourite games, but this kinda tactical combat wasn't exactly what I anticipated when they said they were going to try to bring back elements of DA:O.

Mind that i'm not saying they *are* copying the wicther. It just what it feels after seeing the review. I could be very wrong because we only saw some focus combat, and on (what i believe to be) the console version of the game, wich should be more first person oriented.

I'm not dooming the game. I just dont want them to fallow a game that i didnt like. Again, i could be completly and uterly wrong.

It's a first impression. You can get an idea of something without making a concrete decision.

here a idea then, ppl in here are saying the combat looks like The Witchers, i really dislike DAO combat but id take it x100 over The Witchers, if DAI comes out and the combat is just like the witchers i for one prob wouldnt buy it as i honestly cannot stand it, i really tried to like it but just couldnt an believe me i give games a fair go before i throw in the towel

As much as I like the Witcher I 100% agree.  That said I think it might actually end up closer to Dragon's Dogma, which again while I like ISN"T Dragon Age like at all.

In fairness, it looks much more like Mass Effect, with swords. :P

it's a pre alpha when we see just a character and few blows. Honestly I can't base anything on it

Oh man... if it was like Dragon's Dogma, and I could leap on Ogres faces and stab them in the eyes... AND it has a fantastic story...? I'd preorder right now!

As others have pointed out it does bare a bit of a resemblance to The Witcher 2's combat style, but the elements from Origins and it's tactical combat was there in small doses as well. We didn't see a great deal (and no isometric camera) so, again as others have pointed out, it seems foolhardy to make any bold assumption of yay or nay.

I will say I got a thrill seeing Vivienne casting those flame spells which looked absolutely staggering and gorgeous, and the Warrior having the ability to cast a gladiator like net to pull an enemy's shield away was Spartacus squee inducing.

So the video didn not fulfill it's promise. Gimmicks and tactics are two separate ideas. If that's the idea of tactics then...they clearly don't understand.

Also: Auto Attack? Tactical camera mode? Someone playing the game without an Xbox controller?

Probably the first reveal that didn't help alleviate some of my skepticism.

They're on the right track. They want the fluidity of DA2 with the strategy of DAO. Good balance and compromise. I noticed in the video combat speed was definitely toned down from DA2 also. Another small detail I noticed was slightly slower swing speed animations and in the dodge roll, they had a delay coming out of it. That might signify armor penalties are back in the game because it looked like he was wearing heavy armor.

Anyways, something between DAO/DA2 is the ideal system for me. DA2's speed needed to be toned down. My mind can't process stuff happening that fast on the screen. One thing that was a major negative to me in the video was the shoulder camera. It looked exactly like DA2 and again, the same issues of AOE targeting with magic was a problem. It was a major problem in DA2 and that pre-alpha footage wasn't encouraging. However, I will not dwell on it since you could tell they don't even have basic functions of the game yet. Heck, they were using placeholder models for shields/weapons.

I'm hoping isometric cam comes back or they find an adequate way to properly target with magic. it was VERY cumbersome in DA2. I'd have to think they have something in place soon for that. They had to recognize that was a major problem in DA2. Right? Right? :P

Pretty much this. Looks slower than DA2 and I liked the harpoon, but we've only seen a small amount and no group combat.

Vivienne's spellcasting looks like a huge improvement.

So do I. But really I just see this the same way Baldurs Gate for the playstation 2, was done. They stripped the tactical combat for a more fluid, action experience. Though, in fairness, I might have enjoyed that Baldurs Gate, had it had a stronger storyline or of been an actual remake of the original two.

They told us about tactics but they only really showed us action. So I'm ambivalent.
