Kaidan seems the most realistic and is the most consistent when it comes to characterization throughout the trilogy. He also doesn't have many problems that you have to babysit him for like all te other characters. His only problem is with Cerberus and he is actually really forgiving about it.

Garrus for FemShep (though Traynor is really cute and Kaidan isn't bad).
Tali and Kaidan for maleShep (only watched others' playthroughs).

Liara all three games, for my femshep and by far my favorite. For pretty much the reasons Han Shot First all ready listed. She really brought about a sense of balance when it came to my more renegade-ish femshep - and after ME2 LOTSB, there was an equality and loyalty between her and shep that just makes me go "woa" every time. Shes a perfect match for my canon commander.

I agree. She balances the femShep very well. And on a more personal and more TMI-side of things: I find Liara easiest to relate to personally and ren femShep is the kind of woman I'd be into in real life aswell. So there's that.  ^_^

Where, in any part of this thread, do you see anyone inciting hostility?

It sucks that they can't all be equally good. That'd more fun for everyone (or even one person with multiple playthroughs).

I doubt that.

Developers should make content that's good. Not content to check off a box for each character.

Of course, they should make content that's good. That should be a general goal. If it can't be, it's best to leave some things out. All or nothing, so to speak. Not "all over here", and "half assed over there".

Well then, considering that developers will inevitably have an easier time developing such content for some characters than others, it stands to reason that some romances are going to be better.

And thus that they won't be equally good.

I feel like that would be kinda screwed up if my femshep imediately went back to Kaiden right after Thane dies. :3 lol

It's Tali if your male, Garrus if you're female.

It'll always (to me) be Tali if you're male and Garrus if you're female, (provided he or she is straight, of course)

Team Dextro alone sticks along with Shep for all three campaigns. Shepard confides that in Tali and Garrus before the Normandy heads out at the end of ME3. And it's that loyalty that makes them stand out in particular.

I'll mostly talk about Tali's content in this post, since that's the one fresh in my mind on a recent playthrough.

Tali's romance felt like the relationship that fit in best with the story arc of the trilogy. Honestly, if Tali's masterpiece of a recruitment/loyalty mission set in ME2 didn't already blow what the ME1 romances achieved while Tali had been glanced over out of the water then the way she featured heavily in what I'd consider the already crowning moment of Mass Effect 3 was the coup de grace. Just try doing the Rannoch mission in 3 on a Talimance. It even beats LotSB with Liara, they fit some amazing extra interactions in there.

Besides being more thorough and establishing Tali as a close and loyal ally before revealing her attraction (as opposed to beginning a relationship abruptly upon introduction to the player,) the Talimance also has one big motif that the other female LIs don't present: struggle and triumph over that struggle. There's more to Shepard and Tali then "Hey, welcome to the team." "We've been traveling for a few months in life and death situations together. We'll bang, okay?" This is how pretty much every other relationship in the series goes, and that's not bad. In fact, that's completely fine. But going beyond that is great, and here's the big elephant in the room that seems obvious, but is often overlooked:

Tali's dependency on an environment suit to survive is literally a physical wall separating the two from the intimacy they crave. This not only kept the romance fresh across multiple games, but established for the Talimance an interesting niche: it's the real under-dog relationship. A complete struggle through adversity, beginning with an unconfessed love to a dead commander, reignited by his resurrection, complicated futher through conflicting biologies, and THEN challenged a final time by Tali's devotion to her fleet and it's need for her guidance in the worst of times. And then everything culminates with a space battle that threatens to drive to extinction her entire species, and the ultimate gift: a home planet to return to and a place to one day build a home.

A bond that makes it through all of that, three crazy suicide missions and a miriad other adventures can't be anything except one of the strongest in the trilogy. And I didn't even yet bring up her outstanding voice actress and that goddamned sexy accent, on top of having the best character and dialog writer on Bioware's team (Patrick Weekes.)

Hell, what makes her great is how much the character stands on it's own. She's also incredibly detailed as a squadmate, going over multiple character arcs across the trilogy: one of maturity and growth into the acceptance of command and the personal guilt that a failed mission and fallen commrades entails, a second regarding overcoming old prejudices and growing from a Quarian that would most likely to wipe the Geth from the galaxy if she could to a proud Admiral that would brazenly stand against her own people's demands and fight for peace between the two against all odds, and a third of belonging and self identitiy: the Tali who in the beginning could think of nothing else but stopping Saren and returning to the Flotilla turns into a Tali who would think not of the Migrant Fleet she was so loyal to, but the Normandy itself as her true home. This decision reflects her view of herself, evolving from a naive and selfless envoy of the Flotilla into someone who learns to accept and persue (instead of ignore) what she desires for her own hapiness thanks to the events of the Trilogy.

All of that said, literally none of the romances in Mass Effect are bad except for this short list:

1. Jacob
2. Allers
3. No seriously, Jacob was awful

I'd like to also bring up that any answer of which is superior cannot be a matter of fact, but only one of opinion. I've seen a few comments in this thread implying otherwise, and they're very wrong. That said; Jack, Miranda and Liara are all fine. Even Ashley at least emphasizes the idea of betrayal/loyalty and uses those trust issues to set the relationship apart from the others.

If you liked Tali and Garrus then Kaidan is even better because his sexual interest was retconned in the third game rather than the second.

Just sticking with this myself. Ash is only half of what I was looking for originally.

I like to think of Jack and Shep as renegade equivalents to Anderson and Kahlee Sanders.

ME1 - Nobody
ME2 - Jack or Tali depending on the playthrough.
ME2 - Jack or Tali same as above

Though as of late I'm trying to romance Miranda, but I keep finding myself enthralled by Tali's "assets."

Male Shep x Kaidan for me, even if I had to wait until Mass Effect 3 to finally make them a real pairing. I use Sheploo skin, obviously since that's the only way I can imagine them together. Andrew Ryan's arts on DeviantART and Tumblr really help keeping that couple alive for me. I'm not really interested into the other characters, except maybe James Vega if he was a romance option. Steve Cortez is a cute guy, but I don't see my default Shepard dating him.

My "canon" run was:
ME: Ashley
ME2: None (wanted Ashley)
ME3: Ashley

However, the Citadel DLC really showed me something with Miranda. I still feel the ending sequence of the Citadel DLC is best seen as her with a romance.

So... now my canon romance run is:
ME: none
ME2: Miranda
ME3: Miranda

EDIT: spelling, yo.
